Tyche Origins #2

Tyche's Chosen

Rate this book
The smell of charred circuitry wasn't a perfume Elspeth Roussel liked to wear.

Helm of the Empire destroyer Nostradamus, El is the best at what she does. No one flies the big ships like she can. And the Empire needs Helms like her. Empire starships are dying in the hard black, the upstart Republic hammering them apart through sheer force of numbers.

When the Nostradamus is sent on a suicide mission to destroy Republic shipyards, El's courage under fire is tested. She needs to come up with a plan to save her ship, despite her captain's desire to go down in a blaze of glory. If she manages victory, they might live to see another day. If she doesn't, the Republic will climb closer to victory on the corpses of the Nostradamus' crew.

Tyche's Chosen is the second novella in Richard Parry's gripping Tyche Origins pentalogy. If you like page-turning space opera with great dialogue and heart-pumping action, get your copy today!

Richard Parry has worked as a senior marketing manager in one of the world’s top tech companies, but it wasn't all cocaine parties. His debut novel Night’s Favor and its sequel Night’s Fall have been shortlisted for the Sir Julius Vogel Award “Best Novel” category.

His ever-growing list of novels spans urban fantasy, cyberpunk, and space opera, featuring flawed heroes, sharp dialogue, and a healthy dose of action. His Night’s Champion trilogy follows an alcoholic-turned-werewolf saving the world, while Future Forfeit explores a neon-drenched cyberpunk future where hacking the system is just the start. Meanwhile, Ezeroc Wars throws readers into the deep end of an interstellar war against a swarm species that doesn’t take no for an answer. Across over 20 novels (and counting), Richard delivers stories packed with heart, explosions, and the occasional bad decision.

Richard lives in Wellington with the love of his life, Rae. They have cats, who chase birds. The birds, who have the power of flight, don’t seem to mind.

Awesome Cover, El looks Hot.

Darn it, want more.
Yes I know it's suppose to just be a quick read into the lives of the crew, the before, how & why they joined Nate on the "Tyche" but I'm greedy & loving each & every nugget about each member, therefore I want more.
This is the second inside look into a crew member of the "Tyche" & El makes for one heck of a helms woman.
I want to fly like her.
Just hope someone teachers her how to fight or at least duck faster.
Richard Parry, this is just one of the reasons your on my must read list.
Highly recommend you get this for your reading sci-fi pleasure.
Roll on the 5th of March for Bk3, "Tyche's Hope"
I've already pre-ordered it.

“Tyche will choose her own helm. She’ll have hope in her heart and grace under her wings.” This defines El perfectly!
Second character book, insight of El, her life before Tyche and how she met with Nate. As always, fun reading with incongruous situations and Hilarious moments.
“She was it. She was everything. She was the universe.”
I love this phrase! It’s said every time the Tyche makes a jump. It has a profound and philosophical meaning behind which makes me soar!

I really liked this instalment in Tyche’s Origins, I didn't even mind when the author started developing literary pretensions, in fact I quite enjoyed some of his interesting phrases.

What a Woman

Although not my favourite character in the tyche series i find myself having a warm wry feeling as we learn how this complicated woman finds herself becoming the HELM of the ship for Nate.
I think the worst part of the book is the size as i found myself wanting more about our Elspeth which i suppose is why it is the way the author wants us to carry on with the origin stories. Smart idea as im buying this and looking for the next

Nice prequel

This like the first prequel, fills in interesting details. Not much by way of surprises but for me at least, provides additional depth to the characters as the crew forms.

Again it's a novella, so that might be disappointing but otherwise, I think you'll like it. I'm going to read the next.

This is the background story of the second crew personnel, El, as in Elspeth. She's the Tyche's new helm. If you don't know, the helm is the pilot, the driver, the mover and shaker of this starship and she's good, no, the best.
I've read all the full version stories about Tyche and this particular series are short novellas that allows us to find out how the crew came together and where they came from.
This is fun reading with awesome action and awesome attitude. It's a sci-fi fan's treasure.
El, the helm, is particularly fun and interesting because all she really wants is to fly, to fly a starship, to have a home and a captain that will let her be herself. Nate, Nathan, is that captain and they're gonna fly the hard black of space and even though they'll try to mind their own business, trouble will always find them anyway. That's what makes this novella and each subsequent novella so much fun to read.
I can't wait for the next installment, the next crew member, the next awesome tale in the Tyche universe.
If you like science fiction about starships and big explosions and non stop thrills then this series is for you.
Thanks Mr. Parry for writing these stories.
Sincerely,
Alan McDonald

The beginning of the book took a bit to get going but once I caught on to how the story was starting to unfold for El/Elspeth I got more into it. After giving her all to the Empire that was suddenly no more El had to find a new place for herself. The sudden peace after the destruction of so many lives left El a bit out of sorts. She encounters Nate/Nathan as she decided to get herself a drink and review her choices she runs into some “civilians” that wanted her to pay for wrongs done to them by others in the Empire.

At first glance Nate nor his ship or his request for her to be his new helm did not really impress El, although a part of her had resonated with the Tyche. After Nate backs her when she is set upon by a bunch of tugs, El has a change of heart and decides that anyone that helps a totally stranger out of a bad situation may not be so bad.

This is a pretty fast paced read with an almost Firefly feel to how Nate conducts himself with both El and others around him. While El is a woman of few words she does make you become protective of her with her hopeful outlook for the future.

I would have liked a little more character development and more than just a tease about how protective the ship is of it’s crew. Other than that it was a good short quick action packed read.

Another enjoyable read providing backstory to the Tyche’s Journey trilogy

Tyche’s First (Book #1 in this five book series) accounted for Nate’s acquisition of a mechanical arm and leg. It also revealed how the Tyche came into his hands. At this time, only the first two books have been published. As I cannot get enough of Richard Parry’s writing, I pre-ordered all five of five when I first found out about them.
Tyche’s Chosen provides backstory to ‘Helm” and how she came to be part of Tyche’s crew.
The books are actually novella length, which explains why they cost $1.03 - $1.05 US, and $1.29 Canadian. So far the books have been worth much more than currently priced, though I have been frustrated by how quickly I have gone through them.
Like all of Richard Parry’s books (nine of which I have read and reviewed) they are action packed, innovative, have memorable characters, and dialog that uses humour and irony (the latter providing a nice balance in stories where there are frequent times of imminent death, characters facing impending disaster, and large numbers of bad characters who provide the Tyche crew with a rich target environment. My only quibble is that almost everyone who turns up in the books

This is the second book in the series which gives the backgrounds for the crew of the Tyche, in this case Elspeth.

As a background story published after the main story, you have to wonder if you should read it first or not. And the answer is maybe. Each origin story is a complete standalone and they are not necessary for your enjoyment of the main series, so the order is up to you.

Now, whenever you do get around to reading this one, be prepared for an excellent high action story. You get a little more character development here as that is the entire purpose of the origin story, but you still get a well written story with lots of action. This one gives you space battles instead of palace politics, which suits me just fine.

Highly recommended.

I confess, El is my least favorite of the Tyche's crew. It has nothing to do with the character development or anything she does or doesn't do. It's simply a matter of not connecting with her in the same way. Reading her back-story helped significantly. Even so, though it certainly wasn't short on excitement, this story didn't really resonate with me until she met the old man in the shop (you'll understand this after you read it). After that, I was hooked and couldn't put the e-book down.

If you're a fan of the Tyche series, you won't want to miss this installment.

Tyche's Chosen is a great intro to El, the pilot of the ship Tyche. This is another good background story that adds to the history of the Ezeroc Wars series. Parry just keeps turning out books with wonderful characters and exciting battle scenes. The snarky dialogue and crazy luck of the characters helps too. I didn't want to put it down. I received this book for free in return for an honest review.
