Content/Scope: The American Heritage First Dictionary gives readers ages 5-8 an opportunity to study, read, and learn 2,000 words in a way they can easily understand. Over 850 of the words in this dictionary contain pictures to go along with the definitions. Words were specifically chosen for this item by the publishing company to align with the primary curriculum and everyday vocabulary of these young readers.
Accuracy/Authority/Bias: The American Heritage Dictionary series has been a series from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for decades. This is a trusted name in schools and libraries when considering materials for young readers.
Arrangement/Presentation: The 2,000 words in this dictionary are arranged alphabetically, with over 850 of the words including pictures/drawings on the same page. Other features include opposites, rhyming words, and related words. Furthermore, dictionary includes a guide in the beginning for students, parents, and teachers, as well as a Phonics and Spelling Guide in the back section.
Relation to other works: This children's dictionary is similar to other first dictionaries because of its use of common vocabulary, pictures along with definitions, and key features for young readers (including rhyming words, etc.). In the current school LMC collection, such a dictionary at a primary level for K-2 students does not exist.
Accessibility/Diversity: Pictures and drawings that accompany almost half of the definitions in this dictionary encourage visual learners to use this item. Moreover, the pages are clean and well-organized, using guide words as well as guide letters to help struggling readers.

A shelf staple for sure. I know this will be used more extensively once the 3 year old gets older, but what a great compilation of things they want to know about with a simple direct way to explain to them what these things in the world are! My 3 year old loves to pull out the dictionary, point the photos and ask me to read the definitions to him. Once he gets older, there is great info in the beginning telling them how to use a dictionary and ways adults can use the dictionary in different ways to teach them.
