Provides an overview of the current status of the psychology profession, discussing both its achievements and failures and offering suggestions about how it can reclaim a position of respect
Fucking finally. Been reading this so lazily.. All in all a really interesting book, especially, I guess, for those who study psychology (students, teachers, shrinks and what not). Though dragged this out way more than anyone would this book isn't boring, the writer can captivate the reader, BUT some points in the book seem to be come up time and time again, going back to the same point ad infinitum.
That would be the only thing in the book that makes the read somewhat dull at times.
Fantastic book about the inadequacies of the field of psychology, research, and counseling. Leshan speaks for many psychologists and therapists in the field of psychology who find it difficult to follow the century old mistakes that keep perpetuating in our mental health and behavioral health care systems. If this book doesn't motivate you to want to CHANGE the mistakes of the field, then I'm not sure anything will.
Makes a good point about what psychology has lost in trying to approximate the precision of a fundamentally different kind of science like chemistry in the search for greater prestige and acceptance.
Had some interesting points and a good discussion of some of the ridiculousness of the field. But was also outdated at times and misrepresented the move towards evidence-based practice..
