This was an incredibly emotional read for me, but not for reasons one might assume. This book is alarmingly poorly written, littered with improper nominalization, spelling mistakes, and just down right boring prose. I wasn’t moved to tears by the beauty in which the policies and processes of the EU were illuminated in this book, but rather, I was moved to tears by the questions this book made me ask myself. Am I really a European Studies scholar? Is this the type of scholarship I am expected to produce? Do I actually give a shit about any of this? The EU, as this work takes pains to clarify, is a remarkably complex system, and within this complexity there is excitement and beauty waiting to be discovered and presented to a world of junior scholars looking to expand their knowledge about the EU. Unfortunately, this was not the tactic employed by this author. So, as I’ve now descended the mountain that was wading through this swampy thicket of so-called scholarship, I am left with more questions about myself than answers about the government and politics of the European Union.
I don't doubt that the book as a whole is a landmark work in the field of European Studies. In my personal reading experience, however, there were some parts that simply interested me only very little. Also, it being a handbook, it made for some dull reading at times. Still, overall I found it an interesting read.
A bit outdated considering how fast the EU develops and changes, however it is very analytical when it comes to the bodies and politics that govern the EU. Perhaps too analytical and gets a bit difficult at times.
