Lincoln's Use of the Bible
Excerpt from Lincoln's Use of the Bible
We shall speak of what others have said concerning Lincoln's use of the Bible; what he himself said of it; the use he made of it; and the influence of the Scriptures on his life and literature.
In Herndon's Life of Lincoln the partner and President is portrayed as a foe rather than a friend of the Bible. This is seen to be erroneous by simply reading his speeches, for they are like the dewdrops on the blades of green in early fall, sparkling every where. It is hard to read a great speech of Lincoln's without seeing the influence of the Bible on his life, works, and style.

This is a thorough examination of President Lincoln's obvious esteem of God's holy word, the Bible. The author gives examples of usage within speeches, daily life conversations along with deeds. The Scriptures were not simply words, they were the foundation of living his human life. Some may think the gift of giving one a verse of Scripture is meaningless. To President Lincoln, it mattered more than a proverb or saying, it was the gift of divine Truth. The Bible clearly guided both his life, actions and daily decisions, especially as the of the free world.
