Down Deep is a pulse-pounding, sizzling hot standalone romantic suspense. It features a rough, gruff hero and a fierce-as-hell heroine facing off to protect what they love most in order to get to a sexy, steamy HEA.
USA Today best-selling author Kimberly Kincaid writes romantic suspense that sizzles and contemporary romance with heart and heat. Equal parts action and emotion, her firefighters and first responders always save the day. When she's not finding adventure with her family and naughty Whippets, Olive, Daisy, and Jack, she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to éclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book.
Kimberly's series include The Intelligence Unit, Remington Medical, Station Seventeen, and her brand-new Remington Rescue Squad series. All titles stand alone for easy reading.
I was totally entranced with Down Deep. Ian and Kennedy were two unbelievably strong, independent people with problems and secrets of their own. But, in the end, they found that they were a lot stronger together and that their pasts may have made them who they are today but didn't define them.
Ian was wonderful. Moody, broody and sexy as hell. He lived with a past that haunted him. He hid it well except for once a year when tequila was his best friend. But, this year is different. Kennedy is watching him, seeing through him and asking questions he can't or won't answer. And, he can't keep his eyes off of her or his mind off of what it would be like to hold her, make love to her. Just as things are heating up, something happens that makes Kennedy pull away from him. She has a secret and, he's nothing if not persistent, he will find it out and will be by her side through it all.
Loyal, loving, hard, strong … Kennedy is one hell of a woman. She isn't ashamed of where she came from but doesn't broadcast it. She isn't afraid of hard work. She's always taken responsibility for herself and her family. When she left, she swore that it would be for good. Unfortunately, it's time to go back … she'll do whatever it takes to help her brother get out of the situation that he's gotten himself into.
As the sparks grow hotter between Ian and Kennedy, they can't help but to feed the flames. Working together to find the arsonist, they find themselves falling fast and hard and each fighting it in their own way. Until the arsonist finds them first. Then, there's no denying the feelings.
I loved the way Kimberly Kincaid brought Ian and Kennedy together. I loved the snark. I loved the seriousness. I loved how the mystery intertwined with the romance but didn't take over. Even when you wouldn't expect to feel the heat between these two, it was there. Down Deep was a beautifully written, intriguing story with sexy, strong characters that you cannot help but fall in love with.
To say that ‘Down Deep’ has got ‘lasting power’ makes it rather cringeworthy without the other kinds of innuendos that will probably come up here given the genre that I’m reviewing. Yet I’ve put book down and taken it up numerous times not because of boredom (but because of other things calling) and never once did I feel that it was difficult to get back into the flow of the story.
It’s easy and exciting enough to follow, the rather slow burn and build-up aside. But then, Kimberly Kincaid’s ‘Station Seventeen’ series has not really disappointed me from its inception, through the pairings of first responders with the law-enforcement people that have become par for the course.
Kincaid effortlessly weaves the community of the firefighters into the suspense and action in Station Seventeen—each book builds subtly and slowly on an arc about arson but they work just as well as a standalone—and while it isn’t an unusual take on firefighting romances, it’s Kincaid’s vivid and engaging writing that always makes her stories stand out. Both Ian and Kennedy were good protagonists to follow as well; I loved the latter’s fierce protectiveness of her wayward brother above all, her tenacious hold on never giving up on him, along with the take-no-shit attitude with Gamble when he tries to ghost her away.
I did however, struggle with Kennedy/Ian’s connection going beyond lust and need in the heat of the moment, finely-tuned as it was because of the circumstances that pushed them together. I got that they cared about each other, liked each other even, but the transition to love felt tenuous nonetheless, more so when their brand of love seemed to be defined as a heart-to-heart talk combined with stratospheric sex. The rushed conclusion (that was strangely more telling than showing) and the rather odd fade-to-black climax scene threw me off as well, along with some strings that seemed to be left hanging by the end of the story.
So while not everything worked out for me like clockwork, ‘Down Deep’ was still a pretty good take on the kind of suspense that revolves around arson and firefighting—there’re just too few of these around—and I’m infinitely grateful that Kincaid fills this gap with this series.
Ian Gamble is Engine 17’s lieutenant and a former marine. He likes control, order and abides by the rules. He is intense, focused, and caring. His bond is tight with his firefighter family but he still keeps a little distance. And from the cover model, a total hottie!
Kennedy had a rough childhood but has pulled herself up to a better life, going to college, getting her own place and working a job she likes. She attempted to bring her younger brother, whom she raised, with her, but he refused. As time has gone by, they grew further and further apart.
When an arsonist lights up the dumpster behind the bar Kennedy works at, she and Ian become entangled in investigating it. As clues begin to point to her brother, Kennedy is adamant in her belief he didn’t have anything to do with it.
During their investigation, the chemistry between the two starts skyrocketing. Ian is still reeling from losing several of his military friends and Kennedy continues to struggle to keep her life going the direction she wants it to go. Both are strong, likeable characters.
The author does a great job of mixing suspense and romance, and holds your attention for the duration of the story. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the author.
This one was pretty good. I really liked Ian and Kennedy. These two really complemented one another.
Kennedy didn't take no for an answer with Ian. Not that he wanted to play hard with her, because he really was a softy with her. These two just melded together and had one another's backs from the beginning.
I had originally ARC-read The Rookie and realized Zander was in this series. I was a little irritated because I could tell that there were tons of cross-over characters. So I've been making my way through this series. I loved Zander. Maybe that's because I know where he goes in his book, but it was nice to see how he was in this one.
I know I sound like a broken record, but I hate that we don't get a glimpse at this couple in the future in an epilogue. This ends with Ian and Kennedy saying I love you to each other for the first time and then we are 2 years in the future getting ready for Zander's new book. UGH...this might be a deal breaker for me with this author.

I truly enjoyed this pulse-pumping romantic suspense. Gamble and Kennedy were both people I could relate to, even if the danger swirling around them was not – but that’s what makes it fun. Kennedy is a tough woman with a tender heart, and ghosts from Gamble’s past give him the perfect depth to make theirs a good match. The smoking hot romance was not forced and progressed nicely through all the dangerous twists and turns. Making it an exciting, sexy read. I can’t wait for the next installment.

Ian Gamble wishes he could forget his past. Too bad a night of drinking at the Crooked Angel Bar won't make that happen. However, it's just lucky that he's at the bar when a fire breaks out and he manages to get Kennedy Matthews, the bar's manager out without any problems. Yet, when the investigation is ruled arson, Ian pushes Kennedy to tell him what she's hiding, especially since he knows she's holding something back to do with the investigation. But when he learns the truth, Ian wonders whether he'll be able to protect Kennedy from what's to come because her brother is in way over his head or will they lose their shot at happy ever after because an arsonist will do anything to put a stop to the people trying to take him down?
What do readers get when Ms. Kincaid pens a story encompassing a strong hero tortured by his past and a resilient and feisty heroine determined to do everything she can to help her brother; highly entertaining dialogue that -- at times -- kept this reader on the edge-of-her-seat; and a fast-paced plot that drew this reader in from the very beginning and made it impossible to put this book down? Well, the answer is an utterly satisfying and mesmerizing read where this couple's chemistry is off-the-charts and their scorching romance does their chemistry justice.
As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories and everything they go through on their journey to happy ever after, as Ian has survivor's guilt due to his time as a marine while Kennedy feels she's let her brother down. Will the pair be able to help her brother? Will Kennedy be able to help Ian heal from his past? Moreover, I loved both the main characters. They were incredible and have such a great support team in the secondary characters who will do anything to take down someone determined to cause so much destruction.
With the heroine, she really impressed me with the way she stands up to Ian when he thinks he knows what's best for her. Certainly, her it's-my-way-or-I-go-it-alone attitude and her determination to help her brother makes things interesting and cause plenty of tension since Ian doesn't like how trusting Kennedy is of her brother. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine is the way she helps Ian to work through his past. Things happen for a reason and what happened wasn't his fault. While the hero, he's been through so much in his past and I couldn't help but sympathize with him, as his parents weren't the best of parents and it's understandable why he joined to the marines as a way to escape. However, everything that's happened in his past has made him the resilient and remarkable man he is. I also liked how determined he was to protect Kennedy, even though she's really good at protecting herself.
Overall, this story was a fantastic read, as too, are the other books of this series. As for the ending, it had me worried for the main characters and was a total shock because of what happens, but I loved how things worked out for Ian and Kennedy as they're so good together and for each other. Deep Down by Kimberly Kincaid will appeal to fans of authors Jennifer Bernard, Kate Meader, Shannon Stacey and Jennifer Blackwood, but in my opinion it's a must read just like the first three books of the series are.
WOW!! I do mean WOW!! I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book!!! Kimberly Kincaid once again burns up the pages with Down Deep, the fourth book in her Station Seventeen series.
Ian Gamble wants nothing but to forget his past while at The Crooked Angel Bar and Grill when the place catches fire. With his experience as a firefighter and while in the Marines, his instincts get him and hot, headstrong bar manager, Kennedy Matthews, to safety. But those same feelings rev up when the fire is ruled an arson. Kennedy brother means the world to her and she knows he is involved and in over his head with this arsonist. She will do anything to keep him safe, which is how she ends up teaming up with the sharp-eyed and hard-bodied Gamble.
The more time Gamble and Kennedy spend together, the more attracted they become to each other. Their chemistry sizzles and Ms. Kincaid is incredible in her descriptions of the sexy time shared between these two. As the passion between Gamble and Kennedy flares hotter and hotter, from attraction to all out sizzle, they need to be careful as they try to outwit and locate this dangerous arsonist who grows more dangerous.
I totally loved reading this book. Ms. Kincaid did a fantastic job creating her characters, making them realistic, keeping the story interesting, making me forget the world around me and not letting me go until I turned the last page, wanting more. Ms. Kincaid kept this reader mesmerized with the need to see how Kennedy and Gamble would find and capture this guy and whether or not her brother would survive the torture the arsonist had in store for him. I highly recommend this book to other readers and I for one look forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I'm a sucker for well-written suspense, the kind that keeps you turning the pages while afraid of what those pages will hold, and that is the best thing about DEEP DOWN. Ms. Kincaid wrote a villain who really is the stuff of nightmares and knowing that he would get his is poor comfort when the scope of terror he could unleash before getting his comeuppance is so limitless. The fast pace of the action and the tense suspense make every minute of reading this book so worth it!
The synopsis of the book is detailed enough to give a reader a very good idea of what to expect in the romance department, so I'm just going to stick with my impressions of Ian and Kennedy. Unfortunately, I was not a huge fan of these two characters. Ian takes 'stiff upper lip' to a whole other level that was not very attractive to me and Kennedy's prickly exterior had the same effect on me. Both of them were too closed off from everyone and it made the speed and potential longevity of their romantic involvement unconvincing, beyond the flash of lust/passion.
Kennedy's determination to go it all alone by herself and her protectiveness of her brother, while sort of admirable, was also foolish and could have had worse results than it did, so not in my pro column.
Kennedy's brother was actually my favorite character (hard not to root for the underdog) and I liked that he choose to be grown up and take responsibility, but I was unable to connect with the main characters and the abrupt ending of the story also threw a damper on my final rating. I hope there is another installment where we can catch up with and get the ending we need.

A fiery suspenseful read, Kimberly Kincaid scorches the pages with Kennedy and Gamble's story.
This shows the ties that bind and just how easily combustible they can become when twisted just so.
You get the full gambit of emotions on a ride that starts with his annual observance of the day he was the only member of his team to left after a watch while deployed and Not getting the whole marriage thing.
Things shoot upward when a patron of Kennedy's bar gets a little overly aggressive the further into his cup he gets. Her years growing up on the rough side of town kick in and she quickly shows him he's about as tough as his hipster pants.
But not before Gamble witnesses it just as he's readying to walk home. He sticks around just in case and she puts him to work helping close up. Just when they get revved up in the pantry, the dumpster behind the building blows and puts them and the bar in jeopardy.
When Kennedy's little brother turns up the next morning after a year or so of silence, the ride ratchets up the next windy incline. Seems little brother know something... about the fire but isn't talking. Always his protector, big sister bear jumps in, sure there's more to it; defending him to Gamble.
They plummet down again, only to rocket to the next plateau, working together to find out more before Gamble turns him in to the cops. They ply a lady selling tricks with a bit of cash to help locate lil bro. That's downright funny.
Turns out. Xander has gotten himself mixed up with a serial arsonist, who threatens his life if he tries to back out of the plan to torch some building as part of a job. But the artistry of the flame and path of destruction consume him, what are a few casualties here and there. That just feeds his desires for more sooner.
This rollercoaster of suspense peaks as the arsonist's plan and need to claim past conflagrations become known, and the race is on to stop him before anyone else gets hurt or killed.
These characters learn to trust and lean on one another, and themselves. They overcome their past and learn to live not just today but to look forward to the future.
Ian Gamble is a firefighter, but once a year he decides to drink more than he should to honor the friends he lost when he was on a mission with the Marines. Thinking that the night is over he decides to help Kennedy Matthews who manages the bar and is tough women. They have also been flirting a little, but each of them is not wanting to start anything. Getting ready to leave Ian smells fire and gets Kennedy out. Once outside and waiting for the fire department to arrive, Ian notices that Kennedy is acting strange. That is because she has recognized one of the people driving away from the car that looks like started the fire. What begins as a simple fire turns into both of them finding about each other’s past, not that either one really wants to give up any information. They also come across a guy who is looking to do more than just burn buildings, but also kill people. When her brother is injured by this guy he decides to help the police and what you have now is a mystery with a love story thrown together. It is done okay and the characters are strong enough to keep the story flowing along. Overall a good book. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Ian is an ex Marine that is now a Lieutenant at the local Fire Department (Station Seventeen). Kennedy is the local bar owner from the wrong side of the tracks.
When Ian goes to Kennedy's bar (which happens to be the hang out for the station) to have a drink on the anniversary of the death of his men he sees her....Kennedy. The tattooed bad ass bar owner.
Kennedy has struggled her whole life. She busted her butt to get where she is now. A successful business owner. She's not going to let anything happen to her or her business.
When an insane arsonist is running around town trying to destroy everything he can....Kennedy and Ian team up....sort of. They need to find and stop this psycho ASAP. When things heat up in the investigation they also heat up between Kennedy and Ian.
Kimberly Kincaid totally surprised me with this book. It's a romantic suspense!!! I love them!!! I haven't read the other books in this series so I honestly didn't know what to expect. I'm glad to report that I'm going to go back to the beginning and read the rest of the series. Thanks so much Kimberly.....you just made my TBR pile even bigger that it was.

Book #4 in Station 17. Absolutely love this series. I loved Gamble and Kennedy. Both have issues. Kennedy will do anything to protect the people she loves. She didn’t have it easy growing up. The night the fire broke out at her bar and grill things heated up pretty fast. It was intense with Ian too. She knew he was fighting something, and she wasn’t trying to invade on what was going on. But she wanted to help if she could. That wasn’t all that happened that night, and things spiraled out of control. That’s when she froze up. She couldn’t tell Ian. She told no one.
Gamble knew Kennedy was hiding something. It was not good either. He had to get it out of her. He would do anything for her. He liked her, but she was not a one time kind of girl.
Full of twist and turns. Suspense and so much more..
3.75 Hearts Kennedy is an every woman. She has had a hard life. She is trying to get her life together. She has a brother…. And a bar. Ian has been through a lot. As a Marine and firefighter he has lived a life full or order and danger.
When a dumpster goes up in flames their relationship gets hot. They work to prove who the arsonist is because many think it is Kennedy’s brother and Ian is going to keep her safe even if she doesn’t want him to.
Really good read. Well written and light-hearted.

Down Deep is the forth book in Kimberly Kincaid’s Station Seventeen series and I highly recommend readers grab their copy. I love this series, Ian & Kennedy are the featured characters in this addition and they are amazing. This well written, engaging story took me on a journey from beginning to end and I just loved every minute.
Okay you know when you pick up a Kim K read, it's going to rock. A little sweet, a little funny and a whole lot of bad assery. Of course there's the super awww moments of love and the fan yourself sex scenes. It's awesome sauce, pick it up today.
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to authors..I enjoyed this book and even though I had not read the previous books in this series (sigh) I didn't feel lost, I however will read the previous 3 because I did enjoy this one. I always enjoy heroines who are strong-not bitchy but strong, and I felt we had that with Kennedy. Then we have Gamble an arson investigator who is also seriously attracted to Kennedy but she was holding info back from him. Why? and who is she protecting? Good story and you also like the secondary characters and I know this is weird but I even liked the villain (yeah I know crazy) but this proves to show that this author did good..Enjoy!
Such a great, sexy suspense! A tough as nails heroine. A hard as titanium hero. And a mystery they work through together while falling hard for each other...every element is rock solid in this page-turning romance from Kimberly Kincaid. All I can say is bravo, and I need more!
The fourth book in the Station Seventeen series brings together Ian and Kennedy, two secondary characters in previous books finally gets their own story. Down Deep is also full of heat of the bedroom kind as well as the arson kind. When these two finally started acting on their attraction no one really predicted that it would end in a fire, literally! As they investigate what caused it and who might be involved, both their painful pasts comes to light. Down Deep is as exciting and suspenseful as the previous books, both the characters are multilayered and well developed making their romance hot, emotional and captivating. This is one is a great addition to the series.
My first Kimberly Kincaid book but it won't be my last - as usual I find a series and read it backwards LOL!
Ian and Kennedy are characters with heart and soul and really burrowed deep into my heart quickly. Kennedy was pulled in all directions after the fire at the bar and Ian was determined to save her, even from herself.
Whilst I did struggle a tad with the quick leap over the kinda friends to lovers there was a real slow bloom to the love side of the couple after the lust ignited! Great speed to the story and read it in one sitting!
Down Deep by Kimberly Kincaid is a fast-paced read with plenty of action and romance that will make readers eagerly devour each page, while secretly wondering how fast can the author get the next book in the series out. No cliffhangers here, just pure romantic suspense, that you will want to re-read many times over.
Ian Gamble is a strong man. He’s a firefighter and used to be a Marine, but even the strongest men have a past they can’t forget. Ian wants to forget his problems and goes down to The Crooked Angel Bar and Grill for a drink or four. While there the bar’s manager, Kennedy Matthews, grabs his attention, but nothing could have grabbed his attention more than the bar getting caught on fire. Ian does what he does bets and gets them both to safety, but when the fire is declared an arson, Ian and Kennedy are in for the ride of their life.
Kennedy is a strong woman who isn’t the type to sit home and wait for things to blow over. When she wants answers, she goes out and gets them and in this case, she desperately needs to know what her brother has been up to. Ian isn’t about to let Kennedy do this alone, and together they find out more than they bargained for.
Kennedy and Ian are great together. Both strong characters who have an intense attraction to each other. When they are able to let each other in by confessing their fears and secrets to each other, their relationship becomes something more…something special…something to envy. Overall an utterly satisfying read!
(On a side note…I think Kennedy’s brother deserves a book)
Our hero, Ian Gamble, is a lieutenant at Remington's Station Seventeen fire station. A former Marine, he is drinking alone at the The Crooked Angel Bar and Grill, the hangout for the fire station, to commemorate the anniversary of the deaths of his team-mates on his last mission. The last thing he needs to be distracted by is the hot bar manager with the intriguing tattoo and piercings.
Kennedy Matthews has dragged herself out of North Point's worst neighbourhood by her finger nails to have a career, an apartment and a life she is proud of, but she hasn't forgotten the survival skills she honed from growing up in an area rife with crime, drugs and prostitution.
When Kennedy and Gamble are alone in the bar late at night someone sets off a fire in the dumpster behind the bar, Gamble thinks it could be a disgruntled customer that Kennedy forcibly ejected from the bar but something about the way Kennedy reacts to the car they see speeding away from the scene.
Soon Kennedy and Gamble are embroiled in investigating an arsonist who plans to detonate explosions in several buildings across Remington.
So, I've decided that this series is a sub-genre I like to call sexy-suspense. The books are a pretty good mash-up of a sexy contemporary fire-fighter romance and a romantic thriller. So you get some quite graphic and scary descriptions of fire-starting and the seedier side of life, together with loads of smokin' hot sex (pun intended).
I thoroughly enjoyed this, the plot was engaging and fast-paced, the villains were suitably dastardly and the smexy times were steamy. Even better? Kennedy avoided the classic TSTL mistakes of other heroines so kudo for that.
Recommended for those who like more plot with their romance, more sex with their thriller and two tough characters who fall in love naturally without any manufactured angst.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
An amazing romance full of fire! Ian Gamble and Kennedy Matthews definitely bring the heat! I loved these characters. I had not read the other books in this series so I wasn't real sure what to expect- I was engroused the entire read.
Kimberly Kincaid wrote a romance that you become emotionally invested in while mesmerizied by the suspense/thriller aspect as a serial arsonist ravages the city.
Ian Gamble has a past he’d rather forget—which is exactly what he’s doing at The Crooked Angel Bar and Grill when the place catches fire. Between his active duty in the Marines and his experience as a firefighter, his instincts get him and hot, headstrong bar manager, Kennedy Matthews, to safety. But those same instincts kick into high gear when the fire is ruled an arson, and he discovers Kennedy’s got secrets of her own.
The only thing that matters more to Kennedy than her bar is her brother. When she finds out he’s in over his head with a dangerous arsonist, she’ll do anything to keep him safe—even if it means teaming up with Gamble, who’s too sharp-eyed and hard-bodied for his own good. With every step, their attraction flares hotter and the risks grow more dangerous. Can Gamble and Kennedy face their fears—and their secrets—to catch a terrifying enemy? Or will they go down in flames?

REVIEW: 3.5 stars--DOWN DEEP is the fourth full-length and eighth instalment in Kimberly Kincaid’s contemporary, adult STATION SEVENTEEN romantic, suspense series focusing on the men and women who work at Station Seventeen. This is fire fighter and US Marine Ian Gamble, and bartender Kennedy Matthews’ story line. DOWN DEEP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is a continuing theme throughout.
Told from several third person perspectives including Ian and Kennedy DOWN DEEP follows the building relationship between fire fighter and former Marine Ian Gamble, and bartender Kennedy Matthews following an arson fire at The Crooked Angel Bar and Grill-a hang out for the local fire fighters and police. From the outset a brooding Ian suspects Kennedy of keeping secrets about the potential arsonist, an arsonist who is close to Kennedy’s heart. What ensues is the building relationship between Kennedy and Ian as our couple begin a behind the scenes investigation, going rogue in an effort to find out the truth, before the authorities begin to piece together the cues and information.
Ian Gamble suffers and struggles with survivor’s guilt and remorse in the wake of loosing the men in his Force Marine Recon unit years before. As the sole survivor Ian’s yearly ‘salute’ to his men involves a night of drinking to forgive and forget. Kennedy Matthews grew up on the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ but she continues to focus on the brother with whom she had hoped to reconnect.
DOWN DEEP focuses on the search for an arsonist whose identity is revealed early on but an arsonist with a sadistic side who isn’t above hurting those who’ve done him wrong. For me, the suspense is limited due in part to the early reveal; the conflict focuses on the relationship struggles between Kennedy and Ian, and the take down of the people responsible for the arson fires. The colorful secondary and supporting characters are numerous including several members of law enforcement and Station Seventeen.
The relationship between Kennedy and Ian is slow to build; the sexual attraction is palpable and hot but the jump from lust to love is questionable and as a direct result of events and circumstance that brings the couple together. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
DOWN DEEP is a intriguing and entertaining story line. The premise is well paced and engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are dynamic and spirited. DOWN DEEP is worth the price of admission-check it out and enjoy.
I went into this book with no preconceived notions at all. I haven't read any of the other books in this series. Actually, I haven't read any books by this author yet at all. I am oh so glad I have now discovered Kimberly Kincaid and Station 17 series. I truly enjoyed reading this book and plan to delve into the rest of the series as well now that I have had a taste.
Ian Gamble is an alpha male with a military past that he keeps to himself. He is excellent at keeping people close, but still at arm's length so that they can't see the pain he hides. He is quick to fall into lust with Kennedy despite the fact neither of them is prepared for or looking for a relationship of any kind. Not to mention, they are quickly embroiled in an incredibly delicate and intense arson investigation increasing the intensity of the emotion and circumstances.
Kennedy has busted her behind to get out of the worst part of the city, go to college, and make a career for herself so that she can stay out of the worst part of the city. When she left, she tried to take her brother whom she pretty much raised with her, but he refused and they have slowly grown apart since. However, she still believes in her brother's basic goodness which leads to the two of them and Gamble getting into the middle of an arson investigation that connects to a past incident for Gamble.
Kincaid gives the reader a deep and thoughtful look into the twisted and frightening mind of serial arsonist who is at the point of no return and doesn't care who may get caught up in the schemes or who he hurts to get what he wants. The issues that kept me from giving this a full 5 stars were two things. First, I felt that there were a couple of loose ends that I felt didn't get wrapped up, but maybe that is because they will tie in later in the series. I'm not positive on that yet as I haven't read the rest of the series. The second issue was the sequence of events and the actions of the characters were all very predictable to me-even the arsonists actions seemed predictable and I have no knowledge of the subject matter. I think I was just hoping for a surprise here and there-even just a small surprise would have been helpful.
There are plenty of things smoking in Kimberly Kincaid’s Deep Down. A serial arsonist is torching buildings in town, threatening not only property and lives but bar manager Kennedy Matthews’ brother Zander. But those fires cannot compete with the sparks between Kennedy and Fire Lieutenant Ian Gamble that are igniting into a four-alarm blaze of passion!
Station Seventeen’s Lieutenant Ian Gamble is the definition of tall, dark and handsome, although his darkness emanates not just from his dark eyes and hair but from deep within. In the prior books, you just knew the stoic, dependable and unreadable Gamble had one hell of a backstory. As manager of the popular watering hole The Crooked Angel, Kennedy Matthews too seems stoic and dependable, with a steely demeanor and core under her eyebrow piercing and tattoo. But when a fire outside “her” bar draws Kennedy into danger with a link to Station Seventeen, Gamble and his protective instincts are spurred to action...
Ms. Kincaid’s fourth book in her Station Seventeen presents us with a plot filled with suspense, even though the reader knows early on just who the bad guy is. And this villain is just so creepy, so evil, so immoral, that the fiend will burrow into your subconscious and give you nightmares. As for the romance side - well, this author certainly ratchets things up by giving us a very steamy ( that’s underlined and in caps!), very passionate yet sweet and at times tender romance between two characters who do not do “sweet and tender.” It is that contrast that makes Kennedy and Gamble stand out for me. Additionally, I was so surprised at just how “superhero” Kennedy and Gamble were! Although they were not perfect people, their flaws, their strength and their worldview made them stellar in my eyes. These were two very well-developed and impeccably drawn characters that I could not help but love. Everytime this author releases a new book, I think it is my favorite. But with “Deep Down,” I truly have found my book soulmate! The mix of the elements coupled with two protagonists I just fell madly in love with as a couple has made this book my hands, and hearts, down favorite!
I don’t read romantic suspense very often but Down Deep by Kimberly Kincaid was definitely worth it. It is exciting and easy to follow along. I was entertained from the very beginning and the story kept me on my toes. There is just something about first responders and law enforcement officers. Maybe it’s the fact they seem alpha and brave, but this story about a firefighter will get your engine going.
Down Deep is a standalone, but it does build on the arson story-lines of previous books. If you haven’t read any of the other books you will still be able to follow along just fine. However, a lot of characters from the previous books are mentioned so if you have read them it just adds to the feel of the story. It makes it a bit more interesting.
Gamble an ex-marine, now firefighter, wishes he could forget his past and is trying to do at at the bar that Kennedy manages when a fire breaks out in the alley behind the bar. Something is fishy going on and he wants to find out what it is, at the same time Kennedy doesn’t want to tell him. She doesn’t want to say anything about the arson because she thinks her brother is someway involved and wants to protect him.
While finding her brother and trying to find the arsonist responsible, their chemistry burns until they cannot ignore it any longer. Gamble and Kennedy are both so resilient in different way, but they just get each other. They are exactly what the other needs. I really liked the way these two interacted and enjoyed reading about their developing chemistry. The elements of suspense just made the story more interesting.
I haven’t read all the other books in the series, but they are now on my TBR list. Down Deep by Kimberly Kincaid is a book I recommend for anyone who likes romantic suspense or firefighters!
