La Iglesia católica española, que había vivido la llegada de la República como una auténtica desgracia, se apresuró a apoyar la sublevación militar de julio de 1936. No lo dudó. Estaba donde tenía que estar, frente a la anarquía, el socialismo y la República laica. Y todos sus representantes, excepto unos pocos que no compartían ese ardor guerrero, ofrecieron sus manos y su bendición a la política de exterminio inaugurada por los militares rebeldes. Tras casi tres años de guerra, el “plebiscito armado” que decían los obispos acabó el 1 de abril de 1939 con la victoria incondicional del Ejército de Franco. La Iglesia y el “enviado de Dios hecho Caudillo” caminaron asidos de la mano durante casi cuatro décadas.

The spanish catholic curch have had some "maryrs" and have suffered some assaults in the 1934 republic and following civil war,but having said this it is a objective truth that the church had a lot of capital sins that in some way explain this penance.

This capital sins were:
1-The fanatic nature of this church,being the most intolerant of the catholic world,a nature that in some way is affirmed today ,being more popist that the pope.

2-Has been the main factor in the intelectual,cultural and scientific bacwardness and poverty of the spanish thinking,with institutions that lasted till the XIX century as the Inquisition.
Was a church fiercely opossed to all sort of european thinking and philosofic streams,liberalism,illustration,enciclopedy etc,actively pursuing the ignorance of the people trought the monopoly of the education,ever regarding the man as a perpetual minor of age.

3-An absolute lack of empathy for the poorest class,laborers and peasants,ever in the side of rich and powerful,ever friend of luxury and liturgic excesses,ever promoting a feeling of resignation and sumission of the por and exploited people,using the charity as a substityte of the justice.

4-A pathologic (deserving a pschiatric study) obsession with the sex,being a mortal sin any sexual thought or arousement,and the relations between man and woman yet cinically a lot of priests had a sexual active life ,natural sons and pederast acts.

5-Ever imposed a iron censorship with all that have to do with sex,free thinking and scientific knowledgeas for example Darwin theories and philosofic streams, except of course tomism (Thomas Aquinas thought).

6-A strong inclination to interfere in public affairs and politics (clericalism) that last till today.

7-a proverbial ignorance ,except perhaps in theology, of the clergy sadly transmited to the people trought his monopoly of education and teaching.

With all this sins is easy to explain a hard penance as a consecuence,in form of a acute hate by broad sectors of the spanish people (anticlericalism) that have emptied the churchs except a minority of elders,have the ,happilly,achievement oh have made Spain one of the more agnostic countries of te world and a terrible lack of vocations to new young priests,the spanish priests are very old,having to import priests of Africa and South america that put the church in danger of ,hopefully,extinction.
Now is easy to see and explain the anticlericalism and assaults that exploded in the republic and civil war.

But the "Christian" catholic spanish church in the side of the fascists take generous revenge in denouncing and physically exterminating in the post war years all people of unortodox behaviour or thought or that have some books ,working as a thought policy as in a nightmarish distopy.

Unfortunately this church has never beg pardon for all this capital sins.

A extremely intersting book about the role of the catholick church in the spanish modern histhory for all people interested in this subject and able to read in spanish.

PD-As a anecdote ,if I would have as now,public writen this review in the Francoist Spain I would face some years in jail.

Tenía ganas de leerlo, por fin mi hija me lo sacó de la biblioteca de la universidad, ha cumplido mis expectativas de conocer más a fondo esa peculiar relación entre Iglesia y dictadura. Muchas gracias Julián, por tu labor investigadora y la forma de transmitirnosla.

Muy buen libro de Julián Casanova. Como único "pero", creo que hubiese sido aún más enriquecedor si hubiese explicado un poquito más sobre el papel que jugó la iglesia en los últimos años del franquismo, así como de los denominados "curas rojos"

Magnífica descripción del nacional-catolicismo que se apoderó de España después de la guerra civil y que controló la moral, censura, educación hasta la investigación en los primeros tiempos del CSIC y que nos hizo retroceder hasta tiempos medievales.

Narra el ominoso pacto de sangre que sellaron Franco y la Iglesia... Muchos curas en la actualidad siguen pensando que realmente fue una cruzada...

La complicidad del clero con ese terror militar y fascista fue. . . absoluta y no necesitó del anticlericalismo para manifestarse.

A la política de exterminio que los militares sublevados inauguraron aquel 18 de julio de 1936 se adhirieron con ardor guerrero sectores conservadores, terratenientes, burgueses, propietarios, «hombres de bien» y católicos piadosos, de misa diaria, que se distanciaron definitivamente de la defensa de su orden mediante la ley. La mayoría del clero, con los obispos a la cabeza, no sólo silenció esa ola de terror, sino que la aprobó e incluso colaboró «en cuerpo y alma» en la tareas de limpieza. Era la justicia de Dios, implacable y necesaria, que derramaba abundantemente la sangre de los «sin Dios» para lograr la supervivencia de la Iglesia, el mantenimiento del orden tradicional y la «unidad de la Patria».
