From the author of Blind River and the Absence of Screams comes a new mystery you won't be able to put down! Norman Green is a disgraced former professional athlete turned private investigator. He has created a career out of working for those the police have turned their back on. The only people he won't work with are child abusers, rapists, and journalists. However, when Robin Sweetwater, a journalist working for the same paper that destroyed Norman's athletic career, comes begging for help, Norman finds himself dragged into the same web of lies and deception that destroyed his life once before. In order to find the truth surrounding the alleged suicide of Robin's younger brother, a star athlete himself, Norman will need to wade through the dark depths of his past and unravel a conspiracy stretching farther than he could ever have imagined. Praise for Ben Follows's "Explosive, extraordinary and engrossing; this is how I would describe this exceptional book. The Absence of Screams is a sensational crime/thriller novel that chilled me to my core from beginning to end." "What a great book. I found this book in my hands every time I had a spare minute. " "I couldn't go to sleep until I finished this book." "Ben Follows does it again; another excellent read by an accomplished writer."
After being thrown ut of the hockey league for a claim of steroid use, Norman Green starts a private investigation firm. At first he had a lot of clients, then that died down. When he meets Robin Sweetwater and is asked to investigate Robin's brother's death, Norman isn't to excited to take the case. especially with Julie being a reporter. After all, they were part of his downfall. Still, he takes the case and the mystery is on. When Robin is also killed it is a deadly game and an intriguing suspenseful read.
It was pretty predictable plot with some interesting twist. However I felt that the editing was extremely poor with far too many errors. This causes me to loose interest in a novel. Modern editors seem to lacking in this department, which is a great pity as I think that had more care been taken with this novel in this aspect I would have rated it far higher.
I thought this story had promise at the start, but the writing is choppy and there are too many unnecessary details included. With some critical editing, it could be a good book.
A promising premise with an interesting main character, solving a whodunnit. Less than satisfying, though, in its execution, with some choppy writing, incomplete character development, and somewhat predictable ending.
Enjoyed the book but wish the author had looked up the meaning of the word "smirk" - seems like he used it too many times as an inappropriate description.
Enjoyable fast reading and easy to follow. I chose this book for pleasure reading and it met my expectations. I plan to read more of this authors work.
