Gabriella I can’t stand him. Jamal Holmes. My best friend’s cousin. So what he may be able to help me finally make the move to get my business off the ground. He’s a pompous jerk and judgmental to boot. At least, those are the very excuses I tell myself to avoid his help at all costs. Now, if I could just get my silly body to stop reacting every time he’s near. If I could manage to control my erotic thoughts whenever he opens his mouth or tosses one of those goofy grins my way, everything would be just fine. Only if he didn’t look so damn good in everything he puts on…
Jamal I can’t stand her. Gabriella, Gabby for short. She’s brash, snarky and seems to have it out for me. A damn she-devil. I don’t give a damn how great her legs look in the tight jeans and leggings she wears. Or, how appealing her mid-section appears in the halter tops she frequently dons. Nor do I care that her smooth, brown skin always looks good enough to taste. She’s a pain in the ass. At least, I thought she was until I started getting to know her. The real Gabby, and not the defensive, sarcastic, she-devil she initially hid behind to put up a wall between us. Slowly, I start to realize I get under her skin just as much as she gets under mine. And once we finally begin to break those walls down, we are both surprised by what’s underneath. Neither of our attitudes, or our pasts that come back into our lives can come between what’s inevitably … Something Special.
This was interesting for me. Normally, I love the banter and angst between the characters in a enemies to lovers and feel sad when that ends and the couple get all lovey dovey. It was the complete opposite for me this time. Probably because Jamal is amazing and having him get all possessive and sweet was the best part. Patterson has a clear and clean writing style. This was about average pace for this trope and a solid read.
This was so good. Jamal and Gabby are a trip. I laughed so hard at those two. It was good to hear from other characters in this book. I was kinda hoping for her to be pregnant and she would have surprised him on that special day like he did her. Good read!
Remember when you were younger and there was a boy that would pick on you in school all the time and you thought he hated you but he didn’t? He was just a mean prick because he had feelings for you and didn’t know how to say so?
Well, Gabby and Jamal were the grown-up version of that, in Tiffany Patterson’s Something Special. They were at each other’s throats every single time they were in the same vicinity. Insults and barbs were traded without question and while everyone around them knew it was only a matter of time before they admitted they had feelings for each other, they vehemently denied it.
However, if their friends were betting people, they would’ve won big.
One night Jamal saves Gabby from a potentially bad situation at a bar and things take off from there. A kiss leads to civil conversation and then help with Gabby’s business plan. Soon these two realize they’re onto something special.
Some would say these two had a good bit of baggage between them. Jamal was in the midst of expanding his financial planning company and still having an awkward and strained relationship with his father after watching a troublesome marriage end in divorce. Gabby has a lot of past hurt in her life that she tries to mask behind a million jobs and her seemingly outgoing personality.
These two are the perfect match for each other though. Gabby turns Jamal on his head and forces him to reevaluate all her preconceived notions about what his wife should look and act like. Gabby initially thinks Jamal is uptight and unable to handle a woman like her. He proves her wrong with his authoritativeness yet gentle and passionate demeanor.
The past comes knocking once again, and while it was quite predictable, I figured it out in the first chapter, it added a mystery element to the novel that could have stopped the progress in Jamal and Gabby’s relationship as soon as it started. Open communication and Jamal’s insistence on doing all he could to protect the woman he never thought he would like but cannot live without, stops this from happening.
I would’ve loved to give it a higher rating but there were too many pacing and editing issues for me to overlook.
I enjoyed reading this book so much! I couldn't put my kindle down! I enjoyed the storyline and the chemistry between Gabby and Jamal! Tiffany Patterson is becoming one of my favorites! Fantastic book!
TBH I'm not 100% [110%? :P] sure when I read this book; I know it was after Don's book - I'd actually waffled on whether or not I should read it since :X the premise kinda made me 🙄 and the other reviews I read made me 😒 - but more importantly, the scenes between Gabriella and Jamal in Safe Space I & II - I was like "ugh - wtf these two." They bickered like children who had no control of themselves.
However - I'd read every TP title available on Amazon I believe except for this one - so I was like "man I should just give it a go and if it's really that bad I'll DNF it" - but! it was [much?] better than I expected it to be. And I don't know if it's just generally that, or I went in with such low expectations I was pleasantly surprised? I know I liked it more than For You thought so 🤷🏻♀️ Seriously Gabby is at least not TSTL.
And ... Gabby and Jamal are kinda frenemies. Like - they're in the same social circle, tightly knit, they're obviously been attracted to each other ... but there's definitely the antagonism. [So - I think someone else said in a review they're like school children?] Which .... yeah. The irony kinda being Jamal says he's NOT like that and he's straight up and if he likes someone he'll tell them. ... Which - not the case until this book. I will say IN this book they mostly changed.
And ... Gabby does have reason to dislike Jamal cuz his jumps to conclusions - but also her baggage. She admits she has it and they both have things to work through. I liked that Gabby challenged Jamal, and he was mature enough to be like "oh man - do I categorize women thus? That's a me thing I need to fix." And honestly I think learning about his sister[s] - more about Mercedes etc - and REALIZING yeah our childhood was fucked up AND I bear some responsibility for that - that helped him change.
I also liked that it wasn't easy for them but it also wasn't ridiculous. There weren't roadblocks thrown in just for the hell of it/to draw things out. It felt quite organic, natural, and believable.
And - yo. O_O Gabby's traumatic past.
I ... love it when the men get all ~protective- when Xavier hears dude followed Chanel to her office and is like "oh hell no" and picks her up and drops her off for a week - not that that's going to do THAT much but .... still.
And I LOVED that Jamal's mom met Gabby on her own and really liked her <3 And that Gabby was seeing a therapist. She obviously needed it. [I was also so glad she had Ms. Sandra.]
There's a lot in this book - and yes sometimes the bickering and childishness is 🙄 but you kinda knew how they were going in, and they're way better than they were in Safe Space I & II so ... yeah. [Again - maybe they didn't annoy e so much cuz I was kinda expecting to DNF this book.]
But nope!
It was sweet. I think ... C-?
[and look - I know this is one of her older books ... but ... still/always with the spelling and grammar errors :| ]
Gabby&Mal are always coming at each other ready for battle.
They are the kind of quick witted and foul mouthed couple you watch like a tennis match, fueled by popcorn and wine.
They have to navigate many landmines and hand grenades to find their way to love. Many obstacles of their own making, other obstacles built and reinforced by the people of their childhood, and still other obstacles obstructed by the black smoke of secrecy.
Tiffany Patterson writes about the kind of life experience that makes HEA too hard to believe in. She writes about how long one might have to wait before Something or Someone Special comes along. She writes about making decisions and changing the course of your life until it's the one that makes you truly YOU...hammocks, hula hoops and all.
Being biracial myself I love reading interracial romance. so when I searched up interracial romances this book comes up. and of course after I start reading it I realize it's not an interracial romance at all. so I was really disappointed in that aspect but since I had already started reading it I went ahead and continued. really my only issue with this was that they spent so much time talking about other characters. like when Chanel had her babies. why did we need as much detail with that? or the conversations they have with other people. Pages and pages of conversations about stuff that had nothing to do with the story. I'm not saying it detracted from the story but it just wasn't necessary in my opinion.
I LOVE everything about this book. Seeing that beautiful Queen on the cover until the final word written. Listen Tiffany Patterson write writes- okay! For the past few months I’ve been working my way through majority of her books. I love that most of the stories are somewhat interconnected. It’s like uncovering a whole world and I’m intrigued and possibly addicted. Just when I think I’m moving on to my TBR list or another read. I encounter a character in her books- that make me reach for the next story. Let me tell you- Jamal Holmes was EVERYTHING!! The way he and Gabby argued at the beginning was hilarious. His father was a mess and his mother was the mother we all deserved. I can’t wait to read his sister’s book.
That’s the beauty of Tiffany’s writing. I already know what will happen in Mercedes’ story and yet I don’t care. Because... home girl can tell a story and I’m here for it. This couple will more than likely stick with me for a while. I can see myself re-reading this one again. That’s how much I LOVED it.
Damn- Tiffany. You did your thing with this one. And that’s saying something since I still think about the Townsend; specifically Aaron and Patience. But really all of them. And let’s not forget- Damian and Sandra. Connor and Resha. Followed by Jacob and Grace.
Awe, this story about Gabrielle and Jamal was something special indeed. They weren't so much as opposites attracts but more like similarities attract and couldn't handle it. Their initial underlying disgust for each other was a cover for how much they were attracted to each other and didn't know how to deal with those foreign feelings. However, once they got to know each other better, Gabby and Jamal couldn't deny their attraction and feelings for each other. They found themselves to be very truthful, honest, vulnerable, and protective with each other. I enjoyed the laughs that they produced as well as catching up with some of my favorite characters from previous books. The author did a great job developing the characters as well as the plot. I loved that the strength, resilience, fortitude, tenacity, and determination were highly visible and evident in each character. I was elated to read their story and was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Gabby and Jamal, and I definitely recommend this story to others. Another five star quality gem from the author.
Two things I REALLY enjoy: Black love and contemporary romance stories. Thus, black romance stories should be the best of both worlds, for me.
Unfortunately though, I haven’t had the best luck with that specific sub-genre because I’ve found that pretty much all the ones I’ve come across thus far play up the “hood” part of it SUPER heavy. Of course, I’m not AT ALL saying that hood love stories shouldn’t be told or that there’s anything inherently wrong with them. I’ve just tired of black stories in general being connected to the hood in some way. We deserve ALL types of stories.
All that said, this was such a refreshing read! The main character does come from a low income background and never turns her back on that but it’s not something that the reader is beat over the head with.
This story dealt with some pretty heavy topics but it still had enough lightheartedness to remind me of Christina Lauren books (almost all of which I ADORE).
I really loved Jamal and Gabby and shipped their relationship! Also enjoyed the side characters.
Really looking forward to reading more from this author is the rest are like this!
I could not stop laughing when I was reading this book.
Mal & Gabby are hilarious, the way they bicker at one another when they're around each other is too funny. I love the fact that once they get pass their differences and give one another a chance, they're the most cutest couple.
With Mal being protective and taking upon himself to make sure he always have her back, and she is more than okay. I love the fact that when Mr.Grabby Hands was being a little more than fresh, he handle that business with the quickness. No one will disrespect Gabby, not even his own father. Mal is one heck of a man.
Even though in this book, Gabby back story is really sad, and she really goes through a lot. She is one character who really should get her happy ending. And I'm happy she ends up with Mal, he is one guy that will go up to bat for her.
Really enjoy this book to the fullest, I'm looking forward to reading other books by Tiffany Patterson.
I related to this book more than I ever expected to. It’s based in Houston, TX and it’s support of soul food touches on how big that is here. Also, having vegan options because you gotta take care of your bodies. Lol! What really got me is the show of overcoming the past and the infamous “church hypocrisy”. How church folk can past judgment on the best blessing God has perfectly created for them. How being honest releases us from shame. Seeking therapy to address past traumas is never a bad thing. Being open to love can surprise you in the best way. I’m so happy I was able to read Gabby and Jamal’s story. To experience Gabby letting her walls fall down and Jamal finally seeing that what his dad did really affected his choices in women and finding happiness. Man…this book really worked me over good. Hats off again to Tiffany. She’s out here writing all our stories and allowing us to find healing in their HEA’s.
2.75. I didn't have big expectations for this book, so it was easy to enjoy the reading experience. However, I don't understand why, towards the end, it was so rushed. Everything felt rushed. And when I turned the page and realized that it was the end, I was wondering if something happened or if the author got tired or something. Also, the reveal about Andrea was too obvious. Keeping it a secret did not make sense to me. The "big reveal" was not so big because from the first couple of chapters I figured what was going on. I liked Gabby and Jamal together, even though I think their bickering was so childish, it made no sense. But I am glad they got together, and it was so cute. I like Gabby's and Andrea's relationship. I was wondering how I would feel if I was in their positions. It was interesting. This was not a bad book, not a bad story. But it could have been better. And I wish we could get more.
I loved the story of Gabby and Jamal. I didn’t think anything would top Chanel and Xavier’s story but I might consider this one a tie.
The way these two appeared to hate each other I didn’t think it would be possible to believably craft their inevitable coming together, but the author did a fantastic job. They didn’t just suddenly look at each other and realize they were madly in love. The progression was slow but not too slow.
The book kept me enthralled from beginning to end. Both characters have pasts that have shaped how they view love and relationships and that commonality is one of the things that ultimately makes them perfect for each other.
There was a generous amount of humor, suspense and passion. All the makings for a 5 star read!
I look forward to more books of this type from the author.
OK at first I thought Jamal and Gabby were toxic for each other because they argued like a married couple who hated each other😂 and maybe at some point they did for real. but when they say that there’s a fine line between love and hate bro this book is the epitome of that because they started off hating each other something serious and then they loved each other. I love their love story. It’s so cute and passionate and the way Jamal loves Gabby and Andrea that’s like so cute. he’s stepdaddy material😏 he’s stepping into the role baby!! the wedding was kind of untraditional but Gabbys whole motto is “normal is boring” so I love that for her, so yeah go girl I love this book!!!
I was not expecting to hear from this couple so soon but I am so glad that we did. Gabby and Jamal started off on the wrong foot. He judged her for how she was dressed and she judged him for judging her. It led to years of what they though was a deep dislike for each other but was really the beginning of a loving relationship. I loved their banter when they didn’t like each other and I loved how that changed to more friendly banter when they got together. They both changed a little for each other but didn’t lose who they were as people. This a wonderful story of love and you will be missing out if you don’t give this a read.
Wow, Tiffany Patterson continues to amaze me with how she dropped little nuggets here and there about Jamal (Mal) and Gabriella (Gabby) in the Black Burlesque Series (a must read if you haven't already). I just knew once those two finally acknowledge the underlining sexual attraction that it was going to be EXPLOSIVE!!! I like how there story transpired over a period of time and we were able to understand more in depth why Gabriella had fears on taking a leap of faith and why Mal faith (daddy daddy daddy issues) changed his view of women. The lesson you walk away from after reading the fantastic book is you never judge a woman, man or book by it's outer appearance.
A good read. I loved the chemistry between Jamal and Gabriella. The tension between them was fun and sexy as hell. I enjoyed this book a lot. I could not put it down. I loved revisiting Chanel and Xavier. I will say that the last bit of the book, the author added in some, in my opinion, unnecessary drama with a new character. I felt that it was out of the blue and interrupted the flow of the story. Everything was going smoothly and to throw this wrench in the plot took me aback. And then it was resolved rather quickly. Why add it at all?
Anyway, I still enjoyed Something Special. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
This could have been a great read if the author would have spend the time exposing the reasons for the childish behavior of a supposedly mature and independent woman. The eye rolls and The snarkiness got to be pretty tiresome. The reasons were kind of alluded to, which to me, allowed the reader to stand out side rather than walk in the shoes of character. Eventually everything was explained; however the lack of explanation in the beginning detracted from the story. The HEA was very enjoyable. All in all, an enjoyable read.
Don’t you love when you grab a book on a whim. Something you had no real expectation of. Turns into one of the best romantic reads you’ve had in a long time. I’m impressed. It was current, urban but not over exaggerated. I would’ve liked some more out of the romance scenes, that may only because, well never mind than...... Everyone one has been friends with a Gabby and Mal. Man. Just man. The story telling was solid but makes me think it’s part of a longer book series. I kind of hope so. I would have no problems experiencing the other characters lives.
OMG! OMG! I can't stop crying tears of Heartfelt Joy!
Thank Tiffany! I don't know when the last time I enjoyed a book so much! You had a mix of everything, the story line, the characters with such character! A perfect balance of real people, real life problems and a hard won HEA! I've read many of your books before and they've been awesome but this one?? THE BEST!!! YOU are my best author :) Writing is definitely your life's calling, thank you for sharing your special gift with your fans! I can't wait to read your next book!! Love and peace!!
They were a mess right from the start. So much animosity towards each other, it was bound to lead to one thing. Like they say, there's a thin line between love and hate. Once they got past the hate part, it was sexy sailing from there on out. Jamal was just what Gabby needed. Sexy as hell and contrary to what she thought, very sweet and understanding, which is exactly what she needed. It took them a minute, but when they finally got it together, it was simply perfect. I'm glad Gabby got her happily ever after.
Jamal and Gabby thought they hated each other only to find out that, that hate was love in disguise. Once the judgement was put aside Jamal saw Gabby for the beautiful soul she was. Gabby never thought she deserves to be loved so she hid her true self under brash, snarky antidote. Her past was a mess but in the end she opened up and gave love a chance . Jamal had issues trusting women, growing up a PK, and the way his father treated his mother and sister left him jaded in the ways of love. she took a chance an got her business nd her HEA.
Tiffany Patterson just doesn't write a bad book. This is another in a string of fantastic reads from this author. We met Gabby and Jamal in Safe Space I & II and to say there was no love lost between this couple was an understatement. Who knew that beneath all that hatred was hot as fire passion just simmering and waiting to come to the surface. Really enjoyed this couple's journey.
But we should have known Jamal's and Gabby's story would be. I know y'all remember when we were introduced to these two firecrackers!!! And I just loved e every bit of it. Bravo for Ms. Sandra for saving the younger Gabby and for sticking by her throughout all she endured. I am also glad Gabby got to feel and see and experience how love truly is Something Special.
I loved this book like all the rest Gabby and Jamal kept you laughing, but at end he got his woman
Awesome read I love Gabriella and Jamal it wasn't a dull moment in this book and the way he stood up for her against his father true love i love the bond she had with her daughter I recommend this book a great love story the storyline made you want to be a part of this group of people,Channel and Xavier babies ,love it Tiffany you did it again never a dull moment👏
AA books are not my typical go reads, Tiffany Patterson wrote this incredible story “Something Special.” This story tied up some loose ends for me from Mercedes’s story. I had a ball watching Gabby and Jamal’s story play out as they interacted with characters I had come to enjoy.
I would recommend this story to anyone who believes that you are “Something Special” and that someday you will find that someone who believes that you are Something Special too.
I really loved this story...it was something special!
I loved the characters both were really interesting and witty with fiery and ,explosive personalities. The way they were with each other you know they eventually would figure out how much they truly liked each other. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good ole romance. Hopefully there will be more stories about Gabby, Jamal, Chanel and Xavier such a pleasure to read! Well done Tiffany 👏👏
Something Special indeed, The right tittle for Gabriella (Gabby) and Jamal whose love was full of laughter , chemistry And very attuned to each other. Grabby and Jamal was so funny always talking smack which led to a great relationship. They did not think much about falling in love because of their relationship and the examples that were shown by their father's . Would love a follow up on Gabby and Jamal . Thank you Ms Patterson for a well written H E A 💝
