This book isn't bad; it just isn't good.

The story itself has a lot of potential, but weak writing brings it down. And I don't mind cartoonish illustrations as long as they don't look messy and amateur, like these.

I can see using this with In the Tall Tall Grass. But this is also a summery kind of book. It might go well with A Pig in the Pond by Waddell.
