Condemned as a "top capitalist-roader" and sent into exile, Deng Xiaoping is now celebrated as the architect of the Chinese Industrial Revolution. Photos.
Franz opens with Deng’s own claim that a biography must include the good and the bad and is thus best left unwritten. This was an appropriate choice and no doubt would’ve been even more so had the book been written later, as it would’ve been interesting to hear Franz’s thoughts on the (re)defining failures and triumphs of Deng’s last decade. Overall this account lends nuance but could’ve been much deeper especially given the glimmers of insight already in it.
