The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Rate this book
The big ugly troll waits under the bridge for the goats to cross. First comes the smallest goat, then the middle-sized one. Both convince the troll to wait for their older brother, as he will make a much better feast. But when the biggest goat passes, the troll gets the surprise of his life. A stunning new version of an old classic. Full color.

I really enjoyed the story of this book! I noticed that it had that repetitive theme as some fairy tales traditionally have. According to the illustrations, it's clear that the story can be set in Norway which it originated from, which is an interesting connection. I do wonder why the original story includes a troll, as opposed to other types of fairy tale creatures. I was surprised that the goats where so smart and could outsmart the troll. Overall, I enjoyed the book and think it would be a fun read for students in the classroom.

This book could be used in an elementary school class to teach about folk stories. This story has been retold countless times by varying authors with slightly different spins on the story.

When adapting a classic folk tale like this for children, the art is everything, as there are so many editions out there. This particular version is really beautiful, with a sophisticated style in the painting. The page design for the words is clean as well. This was one of my favorite books growing up, and that's mostly because of the art.

This is just a classic story to read to children. During my internship we came up with different endings for this book and let the children decided which ending was best. They came up with some funny endings. I remember one ending involving ice cream? :)
