Cadence has a normal life, a happy marriage, a successful career, and two growing children. Then, on her daughter Sophie’s twelfth birthday, the world Cadence has so carefully rebuilt cracks at its foundations.

This sequel to the 2016’s critically acclaimed ‘Losing Cadence’ is everything that I was looking for in a psychological thriller.  From the taut writing style to the fully developed characters, it does not disappoint.  I didn’t expect this book to impact me the way it did. I expected tension, I expected action – I got them in spades. What I didn’t anticipate was the emotional attachment that I felt with the main characters, not only Cadence and her family, but also the strong cast of antagonists.

There is a symmetry in this book that I found really pleasing. As a child the antagonist was traumatized by witnessing a horrific series of events, will the same happen to the twelve-year-old Sophie? Can her family find a way to prevent the trauma from wreaking the same type of damage on her? Will it turn a gifted child into the monster who abducted her?

Finding Sophie is one of the most compelling and intense novels I have ever read. It’s a page turner and I often found myself up late into the night reading it, trying to anticipate what was going to happen next. I love the way the book changes narrations in a way that allows the reader to see both perspectives, which not only foreshadows future events but allows the reader to experience a meticulous level of irony. What truly stands out for this novel has to be the level of action. Some scenes and chapters of the book were so intense, it was as if I was experiencing them in person, or watching an Oscar nominated film. If you haven’t read Finding Sophie yet, you’re truly missing out. I highly recommend it!

I really enjoyed Losing Cadence but Finding Sophie surpassed expectations. Laura's growth as a writer and her ability to wrap you into the characters was unparalleled. Be prepared for a torrent of emotions at the end of the book! A must read.

‘When she was old enough to understand that he was her real father, he would no longer keep his distance.’

Canadian author Laura Lovett has successfully written books in the academic and business world. She is a practicing psychologist and an entrepreneur, and now turns her talents to writing novels. LOSING CADENCE was her impressive debut: now she offers the sequel to that book in FINDING SOPHIE – her continued fascination with psychological thrillers. Laura lives in Calgary, Alberta.

Though there are many authors who write successful psychological thrillers, few of them are actually practicing psychologists. That career decision enhances the credibility of Laura’s novel. We never feel as though w are being lead through a maze of psychological terms or states for the sake of drama, but instead because the author understands the etiology of mental dysfunction, has dealt with permutations of her writing’s devising, and therefore ads a dimension of credibility to what may some seem diversions of ‘madness’.

Some sequels work, others remain unfocused, but Laura’s conclusion of her first novel in this sequel works on every level. Her writing is firm, well crafted and rich in introspection. Even the tone of the opening of the story provides a smooth transition into the tale that continues to unwind – ' Richard sat in his villa in the Bahamas, the warm ocean breeze and sounds of the lapping waves coming through the large, open doors of the massive deck. He was fixated not on the magnificent view, but on his computer screen that was livestreaming his daughter’s twelfth birthday party. He felt the adrenaline coursing through his veins as he knew his time was drawing near. He saw her beautiful smile, her sweet face. “Happy birthday, dear Sophie. Happy birthday to you!” played through the speaker. Sophie took a deep breath, focusing intently on the twelve candles on what appeared to be a yellow cake decorated with pink flowers. She blew with great effort, ten of the twelve candles smoking in defeat, as her friends joked about the two she’d missed. He ached to be there with his family, in Christian’s place, where he belonged. The cameras were his companions; they helped him be part of Sophie’s life. He was there for all major events through that small eye nestled so inconspicuously that most top agents wouldn’t be able to uncover it. Leo, the ex-CIA agent who helped him in the dark days after Cadence left him to die in the fire, was a genius at this gig. The hideous scars from the third-degree burns on his face and body were a constant reminder of that day; for years, he had wished it had been his last. But in Richard’s world there was always a plan, then another, and another one after that. Richard had backup upon backup, which saved his life when a guard who was stationed nearby arrived just in time to save Richard from being burned alive or bleeding out from the deep stab wound in his chest. That knife had only been an inch from puncturing his pulmonary artery. The heat of the fire felt as though it was tearing apart his soul, or what was left of it. The thick, dark smoke engulfed his body, and he felt the sharp, throbbing pain of the wound in his chest as he tried to breathe. He recalled those final moments on that burning deck. “Let me die,” Richard whispered.’

And again the summary of the story provides enough substrate for this to stand as a single book (though reading the two parts closely together is far more engrossing): ‘For twelve years, Cadence Davidson has dreaded her daughter’s twelfth birthday, for that is the day she will tell Sophie who her true father really is. Sophie’s world is turned upside down when she learns that her biological father is really Richard White, the man who abducted her mother twelve years earlier. She wonders if she will ever meet the elusive billionaire, only to find herself suddenly abducted into the life that he has carefully crafted for her and her mother. She begs to be free from this man who has torn apart her family, yet struggles with her emotions as she finds herself softening towards her father and abductor. Richard White must fight to salvage his dream of finally having the love of his life, Cadence, and his daughter, Sophie, together. Despite his carefully orchestrated plan, he’s faced with unexpected events that threaten to wreck his dream forever. As his inner voice taunts him, Richard strives to preserve his family and come to know his beautiful daughter. Will Richard be able to find peace and hold on to the family he has fought for a lifetime to bring together? Love, loss and courage coalesce on the great Pacific Ocean as Richard faces his demons and makes one final choice to find peace and love.’

First class book – and a keenly developed sequel to Book 1 - Laura has found her niche and her audience. Highly recommended

Cadence Davidson's life was ripped apart years ago when she was abducted by her obsessive ex-boyfriend, Richard White. She was able to escape three months later although, not before conceiving their daughter, Sophie. For twelve years Cadence has kept the secret of Richard from Sophie but, due to fears of him resurfacing, she must now confess the truth – Sophie's biological father is a kidnapping rapist and murderer. Their idyllic life is further shattered when Richard abducts not only Cadence again, but both her children in the delusion of creating the perfect family. As reality sets in, Richard battles with his inner demons, putting all of their lives at risk. This much anticipated sequel to LOSING CADENCE tops the original in psychological chills, twists and turns. Captivating characters propel this engrossing story forward, especially and – most surprisingly – the tortured persona of Richard. Bearing not only physical scars but, emotional from his upbringing, Lovett portrays his mental illness with such an empathetic hand, it's impossible not to feel pity as the lines between good and evil are blurred. Fast-paced, suspenseful, with perfectly drawn characters, makes FINDING SOPHIE a brilliant physiological thriller worth the up-all-night read!

Whenever I read a sequel to a book I've loved I am always concerned that it will disappoint. That the author will not be able to live up to my reaction to their first work. Laura Lovett delivered another tour de force so I was spared any let down.
FINDING SOPHIE took me right back to the edge of my seat, just as LOSING CADENCE had. There are moments when reading this book you will find yourself holding your breath, biting your nails and almost afraid to turn the page to see what comes next. However you will turn the page because you will HAVE to learn what comes next.
Lovett provides the background which gives us insight into how the antagonist,Richard White, came to be such a singularly driven "monster." Learning of his childhood there is an understanding and a horror that is not easily forgotten. Richard White, is one of the most conflicting characters in any book I have read. You want to hate him - and you do - but, then you want to wrap him in a hug to ease his torment.
This book is a psychological stunner. If you are a fan of thrillers that leave you wrung out and breathless then I highly recommend this read.
The author, Laura Lovett, is a lovely woman and I was so happy to have her sign my copy of this excellent book. I hope to read more of her work.

I found myself quickly immersed in “Finding Sophie” and I couldn’t put it down. Often I find the sequel to a book I really enjoyed is a bit of a disappointment, but that is certainly not the case here. It picks up seamlessly from “Losing Cadence” and draws you in with the same exciting pace, fascinating plot twists and descriptive writing style that makes you not want the story to end. It will be my next book club suggestion!

Lovett does it again! Yes, she had me hooked at page 1 again! This novel continues Richard and Cadence’s story from Losing Cadence, and introduces their daughter Sophie. Finding Sophie is not only well written but very hard to put down, so set yourself up for some late-night reading! Lovett sets herself apart as a true master of the psychological thriller genre, as you enter into a love/hate relationship with Richard as he defies the odds to bring his family together and heal old wounds.

I read Finding Sophie during a recent trip and found it gripping. The character development was superb. It takes a talented writer to humanize a psychopath enough to elicit emotion. In the end, I shed a few tears for Sophie, Cadence, AND Richard. Well done!!!

Laura Lovett's second novel, Finding Sophie is an exciting, fast paced read. This sequel to Losing Cadence captures you and pulls you in right from the start. Lovett's prose flows powerfully from page to page with twists and turns you'll never see coming. The cast of characters includes bad guys you'll love to hate and good guys you'll be cheering for right up to the end.

Finding Sophie is a must for everyone's Christmas wish list this year!

Finding Sophie is a very entertaining and suspenseful read that is a worthy sequel to Lovett’s debut novel Losing Cadence. Once again I was challenged to put this book down.

The additional character development of the protagonist from his horrific childhood in this follow-up created surprising empathy for Richard White. Despite his tragic flaws, the author gives us a glimpse through the biological similarities to daughter Sophie of what Richard might have become had he been exposed to positive influences from a young age.

The delightful Sophie is forced into rapid maturity by the circumstances that unfold and her evolution is profound. I leave you to your own discovery and hope that you enjoy the well crafted novel as much as I did!

“Finding Sophie” was a great read from start to finish. Lovett effortlessly transports us twelve years into the future after our heroine, Cadence Weaverly, was kidnapped by her obsessive and mentally unstable ex-boyfriend, multi-millionaire Richard White. Since her rescue, Cadence has borne Richard’s daughter, Sophie, and is happily married to her soulmate, Christian. Nine-year-old son Cale completes their family, and all seems well until Richard decides that the time has come for him to step into his rightful role as father to Sophie and husband to Cadence, and this time, nothing will stand in his way. Engaging, scary, and engrossing—an amazing sequel!

This sequel to Losing Cadence takes place about 12 years after the events in the first book and has a much faster pace. We also get a close look into Richard, including his childhood, which gives a bit more insight into his obsessions and need for control. His struggle with the past, his self-hatred, and needing the devotion of Cadence and their daughter, Sophie, makes for a chilling tale. Sophie is extremely poised and emotionally mature for a twelve-year-old girl, but it does work well for the story. With some interesting twists, a fast-paced story line, and a dramatic conclusion, this one surpasses its predecessor in both suspense and action.

This the sequel to Lovett's first book, Losing Cadence. I could have done with less descriptions about green eyes and I didn't like the alternating voice in the narration (3rd person to 1st person). The plot elements engaged me throughout the reading (it didn't feel as grand as in the first novel - a bit more grounded) and the ending felt resolved.

Omg so good. I think better than the first book. Richard is so complex. I hated him a lot of moments but just felt sad for him overall. He just wanted to be loved in the end and I thought the ending tied up the story very well.

The wait for the sequel to "Losing Cadence" was so worth it! "Finding Sophie" will have you hooked from the very beginning. A truly captivating story and unpredictable plot twists makes this sequel impossible to put down. Cadence's obsessive ex, Richard, is in hiding after she was rescued. Cadence has given birth to his child, and is settling into a normal life again - she's married the love of her life and they've had a son together. However, as her daughter Sophie turns 12, her biological father decides he's waited long enough and has crafted a master plan to make his dream family a reality. The descriptive writing by author Laura Lovett whisks the reader off and makes you feel a part of the experience. In this fast-paced thriller, you never know what is going to happen next - all you know is you *have* to turn the next page and find out!

Fascinating character development! Also interesting to understand the history of how the protaganist came to be through flashbacks to his childhood experiences. The human elements of complex relationships take the reader on a journey of seeing how unaddressed trauma can present itself. This book also led me to imagining different outcomes, which is the most interactive response a reader could hope to experience.

I definitely recommend reading the two books in their consecutive order: Losing Cadence, then Finding Sophie!
