During the Christmas season, Facebook displayed a sponsored advertisement on my feed for Jenny Randle's Courageous Creative book and the companion online 31-day devotional study. I was intrigued, so I purchased a copy from my local Barnes & Noble reseller, signed up for the Facebook group, and eagerly awaited for January 1, 2019 when the study was scheduled to begin.

Jenny is an Emmy award-winning creative, but moreover, she is a Christian with a genuine heart. (I feel like I really go to know her through the Facebook group, so I am referring to her by her first name in this post.) She loves the Lord, and she loves His people. In her book, she demonstrates how everyone is and can be creative through the guiding of the Holy Spirit (or as she refers to him without the article i.e., Holy Spirit.)

Jenny has written this book in such a way that it's easy digestible. The daily content is not overwhelming and offers practical applications. Each reading has an accompanying challenge. The challenges are diverse, ranging from reading and writing to more visual tasks like drawing, coloring, and photography. The book even includes some video and voice over prompts. As you might guess from this blog, reading and writing is where I shine, so the challenges outside of those took me a little more time. There are some I still want to go back and perfect. And that's the beauty of this book is that you can pick it up at any time and revisit some of Jenny's nuggets of knowledge as well as prime your creative juices by engaging in the challenges again.

This was a really fun devotional that allowed me to grow as a Christian and create some beautiful work. I am thankful for Jenny showing me that I was created to create by the Ultimate Creator.

Recommendation: This book would be a great study for a small group with your church. Whether you participate in this interactive devotional with a group, like I did, or take on the challenges on your own, I am certain you will be motivated and blessed by Jenny's work. She truly is a courageous creative! Visit Jenny online and connect with her on all social media platforms.

Until next time ... Read on!

Regardless of whether I purchase a book, borrow a book, or receive a book in exchange for review, my ultimate goal is to be honest, fair, and constructive. I hope you've found this review helpful.

I mostly enjoyed this interactive devotional. I liked having creative assignments every day in addition to a teaching or inspirational message based on Biblical principles. A few of the creative assignments were not up my alley, but I guess that's part of stirring up creativity—doing what you don't normally do.

Favorite quotes:
“Have the guts to chase after those dreams and create. Write, sing, photograph, paint … and as you co-create this masterpiece of life, may you see the endless ways you can proclaim His greatness. May that be your focus and purpose. Living from the inside out—glorifying God in the midst of the good, the bad, and the messy.” (p. 44)

“Writer Whitney Hopler put it this way: 'If you want to make a powerful and lasting impact on the culture, you've got to do more than just consume it, critique it, condemn it or copy it. The only way to truly change the culture is to create something new for it—something that will inspire people enough to reshape their world.'” (p. 48, quoting from crosswalk.com/faith/spiritual-life/us....)

“I don't know about you, but I'm so over being dragged across the finish line. Like countless other creatives, I have the battle wounds to prove my knocked-out, dragged-across, finish-the-project-no-matter-the-cost history.” (p. 56) – but what about perseverance?

“We're willing to grow as we create afraid.” (p. 60)

“People collide at the right moment to encourage a dying passion. They see you, know your potential, and believe in you when you don't.” (p. 112)

“In the book Whiter Than Snow, Paul Tripp says, 'We were made to live in a humble, worshipful, and loving dependency upon God and in a loving and humble interdependency with others. Our lives were designed to be community projects.'” (p. 112)

(I received this book as a gift. I was not compensated for this review. All opinions are my own, as was my decision to write a review.)

Have you ever felt as though you are not creative?  Maybe you feel like creativity is only something for those “artsy types” who are able to understand abstract art, or seem to always get the perfect angles in their photographs.  Well, in her new book, “Courageous Creative”, Jenny Randle is here to tell you that the creative journey is for absolutely everyone because we have all been created by a creative God.  Whatever your life looks like, this interactive devotional will be a valuable step to either boost your creative mind, or rediscover the creativity that is perhaps buried beneath the not-so-great parts of life.

Written in a warm, humorous, honest style, “Courageous Creative” is a daily devotional designed to take you on a 31 day journey to get your creative juices flowing and to help heal the blows that have been dealt to the creativity inside of you.  Each day’s reading is very short, which for me makes it very “doable”, and each chapter ends with a Creative Challenge which is where the interactive nature of this book comes into play.  The Creative Challenges are my favourite part of this book, as the ideas are fresh and well-rounded.  They consist of many topics from working with your hands, to mind-mapping, to creatively interacting with friends, neighbours and co-workers.  What I appreciate most about the Creative Challenges is that they do not require extravagant supplies that will cost money that some may not have.  I also love that, while stretching your mind and heart, the challenges will only take small amounts of time to complete each day.

I absolutely urge you to take this journey of creativity with Jenny Randle as your guide.  What I have written here is only a very small sample of all the gems found in this book.  No matter what your life looks like, you will not be excluded as “un-creative” in this book.  Instead, your own uniqueness will be celebrated and brought to light in ways even you didn’t know were possible.

Courageous Creative by Jenny Randle

I love this 31 day interactive devotional to encourage you to become more creative! Its less of a book and more of an experience that draws you closer to God in the middle of the journey. She helps you get rid of any excuses that you can't be creative by walking you through it, she even included a commitment contract that you will finish this book along with an accountability partner! You start off with a short creative quiz to help you and then she lists 50 ways to be creative sparking your creativity and thought process! Within every chapter, she makes sure to mention our great Creator so the journey this book creates makes you closer to Him by working on your current relationship with God. This book is packed full of tips and tricks, maps to help your creative process, pictures to color, and simple biblical truths all while lined with scriptures throughout. My daughter loved this book so much that she wants to do it with me again during the new year! It has helped us be more creative and draw closer to God all while helping our mother-daughter bond. This book is incredible! I recommend it for anyone that wants to be more creative in their journey of faith!

I received this book from the publishers.

Read this book if you are a creative.

Wait, what? You don't think you are a creative? Jenny Randle begs to differ.

Don't we often balk at the idea that we are creative? Don't we all have excuses for why we can't be called creative?

Courageous Creatives invites us each to peer within, to see the creative part that we have lost sight of , that place where we confidently revelled in as little kids.

Written by a creative for creatives..(psst...That's you! That's me!)... Jenny will kindly and boldly lead you to a new place of identity and freedom with the Most Creative One of all, God!

Let your creative muscles be stretched. Let your creativity be cultivated afresh. Leap into the interactive moments in this vibrant, short, to-the-point devotional.

So you still don't think you are a creative? I dare you to let Jenny Randle show you otherwise!

Thanks to you Harvest House for the ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion about this book.

Wasn't sure what to think of this book, as I have not usually finished any book with a number of days in the title. Jenny encourages you, in the beginning, to get accountability and fill out the commitment contract - crucial for this creative. I did it and I finished the book! To say this book was life-changing sounds cliche' but is also an understatement. My creative life has taken off and I sold my first photo recently, thanks to the tips in Courageous Creative. This book will transform creativity as we know, it will set people free and allow them to create from a place of freedom and identity. All the things that keep us from utilizing our God-given gifts are addressed on these pages and as you spend time in the Word and the book, you too will be changed, forever. A must read for creatives and non-creatives alike.

Courageous Creative is a win-win! You will grow in your relation with the Lord and strengthen your creative identity through this 31 day devotional. Jenny writes in a warm & inviting, "I want her as a friend!" style but also lovingly challenges you to step out of your comfort zone (think Momma' Bird helping her babies out of the nest). The daily challenges are fun and will stretch you everyday to embrace your unique God-given creative style. Courageous Creative Christian - let's do this!

Have you ever felt creative and didn’t know how to challenge yourself? This 31 day interactive devotional gives you just that. A challenge every day to further your mind and creativity levels. It’s fun. It’s hilarious. It takes no time! 10 minutes out of your day to write, draw, act, and more. Grab a friend and do it together. Trust me, it’s not something you want to miss out on.

Courageous Creative: A 31-Day Interactive DevotionalThis 31 day interactive devotional was all it promised to be and more. The devotional content was God centered, challenging, thought provoking, and encouraging. My relationship with Christ has grown in ways I did not realize were missing until I started this book. My understanding of who I am in Him has increased my joy and my creativity. The creative challenges issued each day were never easy, but always fulfilling. Each assignment not only stretched my creativity, it pushed me out of my comfort zone in a way that was rewarding and taught me much about myself and my God. I cannot remember what caused me to buy this book, but I am ever so grateful I did. Everyone can not only learn from this book but grow as well. I cannot possibly recommend it any higher.

Courageous Creative drew me back to my reason for a lot of what I do. I love Jesus, nature, writing, photography, painting, music--all because God put those creative desires and expressions in my heart. But I spend much of my time just doing the things I need to do to get by. The author inspired me in these 31 days to express my heart and my love for God through many different creative outlets. In doing so, I have regained the love and joy of worshiping God with passion and creative expression, and I am feeling the passion again!
