This simple little book of story-based devotions will change your world, one day at a time."Whether you have a healthy craving for more Jesus, or the barely discernible taste for a relationship with Him that seems beyond your reach, the glorious truth is that God put that hunger in your heart in the first place, and He is more willing to fan that flame than you or I could ever be." --From the Introduction Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, the Belle of All Things Southern, is back with a devotional guide for the Jesus-hungry heart. I fell in love with storytelling as a child when my paternal grandmother regaled us with stories of what it was like to come to Louisiana from the hills of Appalachia and set up house in a tent with a dirt floor. On the other side of the family tree, my paternal grandfather, a people loving preacher, was known for using humor to draw his listeners to Jesus. It's safe to say the two of them marked me. Whether in my books, speaking before audiences, or dropping a segment on The Story Table podcast I created, I love nothing more than helping hungry hearts feast on Jesus through humor and storytelling. ~Shellie
Shellie Rushing Tomlinson lives in Lake Providence, Louisiana with her husband, Phil. They have two happily married kids, six grandchildren, and one neurotic lab named Hank. There's a story there...
I had read Hungry Is a Mighty Fine Sauce and adored this author’s sense of humor, her passion for the Savior and the fact she can tell a good story is a bonus. I like her transparency too.
Here’s a peek into how she kicked off a devotion talking about a sign she read walking in the woods that said, “Walk at your own risk.” This got her thinking of her Christian walk. “…to follow Christ is not merely to risk our lives; it is to lose them. So I’ve been thinking: perhaps we should add a similar caution to our church signs….Follow Jesus at Your Own Risk. Details Inside.” …(message not a big draw she admits) but, ”When we die daily to walk with the God-man, we soon discover that His presence is worth every single step.”
This devotion is filled with scripture, hope, fun thought-provoking stories to encourage your faith along with beautiful pictures and yummy looking recipes. It’s a winning combination.

Are you a Sunday Christian? Do you attend church and forget about Him the rest of the week? Do you look at others and wish you had that fire and zest for your walk with God? If I’m honest with myself, my answer to those questions is sometimes yes. I walk through seasons where I am simply going through the motions, wondering if it’s worth it. Wondering why I’m not like those around me. In Devotions for the Hungry Heart: Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday, Shellie Rushing Tomlinson provides twenty weeks of short, conversational devotions. Reading these is like sitting down with a friend for a short chat—only you get to do it six days a week. This clothbound, bright book is something to reach for when you feel yourself struggling with your walk with God. Each entry is short enough at a page and a half to fit into even the busiest morning. And you get the added bonus of a handful of yummy-looking recipes. Delighted with Hungry is a Mighty Fine Sauce, I was very excited to learn of Shellie Rushing Tomlinson’s upcoming release, Devotions for the Hungry Heart. In fact, I loved the cookbook so much, I gave away 3 copies as gifts!
Devotions for the Hungry Heart is true to Shellie’s warm and comforting southern style; a style that makes one feel as if she is sitting at your kitchen table, with a cup of hot tea, lovingly encouraging you to be hungry, hungry for God.
Sharing anecdotes from her own life, sometimes humorous, that encourages me to direct my hunger for Him through prayer; intentionality; surrender, and celebration. I found myself eagerly reading day after day of devotions, feeling loved and encouraged by the author, and most importantly, wrapped in the love of my Heavenly Father.
Hungry anyone? Come to the table and partake in the feast that God is always offering to His children. The author shares what has been placed on her heart through the recurring themes of Sharing, Needing, Celebrating, Praying, Surrendering and Being intentional. She writes in a warm, conversational way that draws the reader in. I loved her humorous, anecdotal portions of each devotional.
I especially enjoyed the Thursday devotional of week fourteen. It felt as if it was written directly to me, a lifelong bookworm. I am thankful for so many things in my life, including my many books! God intimately and incredibly cares for us and the details that are important to us. Thank-you Lord. He loves us so well!
I recommend this book to encourage a healthy hunger for spiritual food.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing, and also purchased a Kindle copy. I was under no obligation to post a review.
Devotions for the Hungry Heart is a bit of a different devotional and I was intrigued by its content. This is a 20 week devotional that goes from a Monday to a Saturday and its emphasis is on those who seek after God. The weekly headings for the week are the same throughout the book and are about a Hungry Heart: Monday- Surrendered, Tuesday-Intentional, Wednesday-Praying, Thursday-Celebrating, Friday-Needy, and Saturday-Sharing. The devotional includes a snippet or story from the author and ending with a Bible verse.
With just one or a couple of verses added at the end, I think I would consider this more of an inspirational read to be paired with your daily Bible reading. Plus there are about a dozen recipes with pictures included in the middle of the book that the author has provided. They look quite tasty and not really complicated to make. I plan to try some soon.
Overall, I thought this book was unique and set apart from other books of its kind, though I am not really sure I would call it a devotional. The only other thing that I did not care for was the feel of the cover itself. It is a lovely book but as a personal preference I did not care for the roughness. I did like the author sharing her stories and wisdom in a manner like a dear friend would.

"Whether you have a healthy craving for more Jesus or the barely discernible taste for a relationship with Him that seems beyond your reach, the glorious truth is that God put that hunger in your heart in the first place..."
I enjoyed this little devotion book for the most part. If you're looking for a meatier devotion, look elsewhere, for this book contains shorter devotions. There is a scripture at the end, so you are getting some of the Word. Personally, I prefer a passage to look up and meditate on. Each devotion is a few paragraphs and shares a scene from the author's life, then a paragraph relating it to our walk with the Lord. It would certainly not do me for my main devotion but it's a good one for a brief night time devotion or maybe a quick grab at lunch.
One thing I didn't like is the print. It's very, very light and hard to see unless you're looking at it under a good light source. Maybe it's just that I'm older and a younger person could see it better.

This devotional was such a pleasure to read. Shellie's stories of growing up on Bull Run Road were chock full of hidden spiritual insight. I kept thinking of Texas friends who had similar growing up experience, with probably some identical spiritual ah-ha moments. This book made me want to examine my own everyday experiences for deeper truth and applilcation.
This devotion book was exactly what I needed. This year I want so much more Jesus - and less of me. I loved the writing style, the way that the devotions seemed like they were written just for me. I loved that there was humor and personal stories mixed into it. I will be passing this on to my daughter.

This is a six day a week devotional, well written and well worth the time to open up your heart to Jesus. It ends up being a 3-4 month journey, with Sunday as the day of rest while you go to church. A very good primer as devotionals go. Touching and enlightening, well worth your time to use it as a guide.
What is your heart hungry for? I sat down thinking I would read through a few of these devotionals and skim through the book. Before I knew it I had read about 75 percent of the book. If you are on the hunt for a gentle, sweet devotional this is for you. This will give you a heartwarming story, related to what a Hungry heart is. Like A Hungry Heart is Sharing, A Hungry Heart is Needy, or A Hungry Heart is Surrendered. The beauty of this devotional is in the art of a good Southern Storyteller. You get a lesson each day hidden in the middle of a story that draws you in and you just want to keep reading.
I really enjoy that it is laid out based on days of the week but not dated so you can start anytime. Really good book and certainly a great devotional to keep with your Bible. Some days I just don't want to dive into a Bible study. Some days my heart is hungry for something gentle that will entertain me in a way but still leave me with scripture and truth to ponder as I go about my day. This devotional is perfect for that! I received a digital copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Devotions for the Hungry Heart by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson is one of those books that looks so promising from the outside you immediately want to love it. I suppose that's why they say you should never judge a book by its cover! The overall execution is a real mess. The dark grey paper seems recycled, which in itself is not a problem. However, the two ink colors used for the text of the devotional are pale teal and dull mustard. Combine with the dark paper, this makes the text almost entirely unreadable if the reader is not in bright lighting.
The content is also less than desirable. With six devotions each week, the reader is encouraged to "chase Jesus" through different states that are said to exist within a "hungry heart:" surrender, intentionality, prayer, celebration, need, and sharing. Despite the odd terms for these different states of the heart, my main issue is actually the contents of each day's entry. For a devotional to be meaningful or useful in my daily spiritual walk, it needs to include Scripture, and be followed by commentary about that Scripture. This devotional contains short stories (think 4-5 paragraphs) about the author's life or experiences as it relates to one of the six key heart states (from above) for the week. The devotional ends with a verse that usually contains one word that is repeated from the devotional content. There is a term for this…It's called proof-texting!
To add insult to injury, the center of the devotional contains recipes. Yes, recipes. I suppose it relates to the devotional because of the word hungry in the title? Bizarre…
I am a huge advocate of finding a daily devotional that helps guide you through Scripture and leads you toward Christ. This time of year the market is flooded with new devotionals to grab your attention. Please don't let this be one of them. With just a quick search, you can find hundreds of devotionals, both new and time-tested classics, that will help you grow spiritually and guide you through meaningful daily Scripture readings that can and will change your life. If you need suggestions, I'd be happy to give you one!

The author has written a devotional style book with twenty weeks of readings that reflect the author's journey to a hunger for God. She focuses on six themes that include Sharing, Praying, and Celebrating. The book is hardcover and includes a ribbon bookmark and recipes in the middle. The recipes are on glossy paper and have pictures.
My first thoughts were extremely positive when viewing this book. I loved the cover. The colors and design really drew my attention. It's definitely wrapped in a beautiful package. The recipes were an odd, but nice addition. They aren't unique or super complicated, but seem to be more in the style of comfort food. Each day begins with a story and ends with a scripture that the author thinks fits with her story. I didn't really get the devotional vibe. It was more like reading the thoughts of a diary that had a faith base. Overall, I think this is a neat book, but wouldn't use it as a devotional.
I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing. All thoughts expressed are my own.
I have been a huge fan of Shellie Rushing Tomlinson ever since I read her book Heart Wide Open several years ago, and I discovered her Love for Jesus sprinkled in with her Southern hospitality & humor! So, when I was offered a copy of Devotions For The Hungry Heart to review I literally jumped for joy at the opportunity!
Once again Miss Shellie - AKA "Belle of All Things Southern" nails it! She combines her funny true stories with her passionate desire to be Christlike in her Hungry Heart every day walk with Jesus.
I love how the devotion for every day of the week is something different: Surrendered, Intentional, Praying, Celebrating, Needy, & Sharing, and of course because of Shellie's Southern Hospitality she has shared some of her wonderful, scrumptious, Southern recipes right from one of her other books Hungry Is A Mighty Fine Sauce.
I absolutely adored this book, and I look forward to seeing what Shellie will be cooking up next!
"I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing, and was under no obligation to post a review".
I really love this devotional. The author writes in a very approachable and relatable way. She uses relevant illustrations for the verse and although the devotions are only 1 or 2 pages, they pack a big punch.
It contains 20 weeks of devotions, one for each day of the week minus Sunday. The devotions are not dated so it’s easy to start at any time. The book also contains recipes and photos, which is something I’ve never seen in a devotional book before. The recipes look tasty but a little fancier than what I prefer (but cooking is not my thing).
The devotionals always make me think. This is the perfect book to keep on your nightstand and read in the morning before starting the day. Reading these helps the reader to fill their spiritual bellies and they only take a few minutes to get through.
I highly recommend this book as a gift to yourself or someone else.
My Rating: 5 stars
I won this book from Goodreads First Reads giveaways. All opinions are my own.
"Devotions for the Hungry Heart" is the first book that I have read by author Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, but I am certain it will not be my last. I fell in love with this 20 week devotional immediately and devoured it within a few days. (I know! I couldn't help myself.) This sweet 272 page hardcover book is published by Shiloh Press. The padded cover is inviting and feels nice to the touch. There are glossy full color pictures which adorn the center which are beautiful and have yummy recipes. I love recipes in books.
In the introduction, the author says, "Whether you have a healthy craving for more Jesus, or the barely discernible taste for a relationship with Him that seems beyond your reach, the glorious truth is that God put that hunger in your heart in the first place, and He is more willing to fan that flame than you or I could ever be." How is that for encouragement? Do you see why I fell in love so quickly? She had me at "craving for more Jesus." The older I get the more my soul craves to be closer, near to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This book gave me daily servings of that.
Author Shellie has a very nice style of writing. Her devotions are only one to two pages long, but she loads them with powerful words. The way she writes is smooth and her message just flows easily from the pages into my heart and mind. Using topics that are relatable to us she inspires us in her open and honest way. Reading is like chatting with a friend, prayer partner, or Sister in Christ that just gets you. I found the author to be witty, humorous, God glorifying, encouraging, approachable and transparent. She taught me what being hungry for Jesus meant. Dividing that up into six topics: Sharing, Needing, Celebrating, Praying, Surrendering and Being Intentional, the author explained in her sweet Southern style. I have continued pondering them long after finishing her book. Have you ever thought what an example of being hungry for more Jesus liked like? Think about it a minute. Better yet, just get this book.
One of the great things about this devotional is that it isn't dated. Readers do not need to worry they are missing out by not starting it on a certain date. It has daily devotions, Monday through Saturday, that could be started at anytime. There is an illustration along with the scripture and message. A ribbon bookmark is sewn into the book so that your place will be kept. The recipes in the center are from the author's cookbook, "Hungry Is a Mighty Fine Sauce." After the devotions, there is a Scripture reference page. Very helpful for future use or when counseling a friend.
This book is definitely a keeper and one to give away. It gives encouragement to all Christians whether you are a new seeker or older seasoned one. Everyone will glean something from this beautiful, delightful food for the soul book. The only problem you will encounter is where to keep it - on the breakfast table or nightstand! Well, that and limiting yourself to one devotion per day. I will be buying many for gifts. A definite 5 star recommendation from this hungry for Jesus gal.

My Review:
A girl needs a good strong devotional to get through the days ahead, especially when those days are laced with a lot of uncertainty and stress. In Shellie Rushing Tomlinson's book Devotions for the Hungry Heart she conveys the things we need the most from the bread of life. Food for the spirit never looked so good, y'all!
She takes us along on her spiritual journey in the hopes that we will learn from it and see Christ in it. A hungry heart, it turns out is a heart full of many things that one might not expect, at first. The author teaches us those things and in a mighty way. I really enjoyed her book for many reasons but the fact that she is southern to the core, may have swayed me a little further. This book is a great way to grow closer to Jesus.
A typical devotion with a backbone of the Bible with life lessons sprinkled throughout and a rendering of Christ Jesus that will make you slap your mama. A fantastic way to get you some Jesus!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author. All opinions are my own.
I don't have a solid history with devotionals. I'll start out with the best of intentions, but then the practice of opening up the book and reading the entry for the day quickly fades away and I get all behind and then there's the self-guilting and, in the case of a review copy, reviewer's guilt too. But here's the thing, unlike any other I've read or partially read, this particular devotional is simply charming.
Shellie Rushing Tomlinson writes with a touch of humor and a great, big Southern heart for Jesus. Each day's entry, Monday through Saturday, begins with an "A Hungry Heart is..." title followed by a story that leads to a question, message, and/or observation and an associated verse from the Bible. The stories are quick bites, many from her own life, that take about two minutes to read, making this devotional do-able even on a slightly hectic morning and leaving plenty of time to contemplate the message and verse when the morning's pace (or whatever time of day, mornings aren't required) is a bit more leisurely.
This isn't to say that it is devotional perfection. Not every story leads smoothly in, not every story will be personally relatable to every reader (but then, not many personal story based books are, in my experience), and the yellow-gold text of the verse can be difficult to make out first thing in the morning. But that is easily forgiven, as the message stays on point and pertinent. While one day might make you go "uhm, okay" the next day will charm you right back into loving spending those two-plus minutes. Not to mention the super adorable cover, and hello, recipes in the middle!
The Monday through Saturday format is one that I really like, and unlike those devotionals with days of the year (so easy to get behind!), this is simply twenty Monday through Saturday weeks that leave which weeks those are up to your own discretion. This devotional is personal, relatable, and goes down easy, no previous experience required. Recommended.

***Thank you, Shellie, for your sharings! This review was written in my own words. No other compensation was received.***
Devotions for the Hungry Heart by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson is not date based so one can start at any time. This was exciting for me as I did not receive it on January 1. Another great feature of this 20 week devotional is that it runs from Monday – Saturday with devotionals for those who seek God every day of the week. Honestly, I do find myself wishing there was a Sunday devotional but that is because I am enjoying Shellie’s stories so much. The headings are continuous throughout the book and all based on a Hungry Heart. Mondays focus on surrendered hearts, Tuesdays on intentional hearts, Wednesday on a praying heart, Thursday on a celebrating heart, Friday on a needy heart, and Saturday on a sharing heart. Each devotional includes a great story from the author’s personal life and ends with a correlation to the scriptures and a Bible verse.
The Bible verse has given me a great start to jump right into the scriptures for a daily reading. The author has added several recipes with pictures in the middle of the devotional. This is a unique additional to the book.
The cover and design of the devotional is very appealing to the eye and I loved how the gold dots were throughout. Overall, I thought this devotional was exceptional and the devotionals were just the right amount of read for a busy woman who is seeking God with her whole heart. I see myself utilizing this devotional for quite some time. Shellie has written a devotional that not only gives you guidance in filling your hungry heart, but leaves you aching for more. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
Shellie Rushing Tomlinson’s book. Devotions for the Hungry Heart: Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday, is a delightful devotional.
The book features 20 weeks running Monday through Saturday. Each week has a personal anecdote to illustrate each of the days with Monday being titled-A Hungry Heart Is Surrendered, Tuesday-A Hungry Heart Is Intentional, Wednesday-A Hungry Heart Is Praying, Thursday-A Hungry Heart Is Celebrating, Friday-A Hungry Heart Is Needy and Saturday-A Hungry Heart Is Sharing. Every devotional is short, only 1 to 1 ½ pages and ends with a Bible verse. Also, included in the middle section is a short, colorfully illustrated set of recipes.
I enjoyed reading Devotions for the Hungry Heart. However, there are 4 caveats: 1) the pages are not a pure white, but more of a dusky color, 2) the color of the text is a blue-green color (almost a turquoise or teal), 3) the verse at the end the day’s devotion is a golden or gilded color and 4) this is not an in-depth study, but more of an ending for your daily devotional. The first three things make it a little difficult to read. Nonetheless, it is well worth the effort.
Tomlinson writes in a folksy, sharing a cup of coffee kind of way that I enjoyed. I am sure she would attribute it to her Southern roots, as she does for many aspects of the book. Her stories made me wish I knew her or that she was a neighbor of mine.
I received this book from Barbour Publishing and NetGalley. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.
Love these daily bit sized devotions that stir our soul hunger for God. This book includes daily readings for 20 weeks and the readings are short in length so they could be read in a quick 5 minutes at the beginning of your day, or during a lunch break or right before bed to get your heart and mind focused on God. I love how each day of the week (Monday to Saturday) has a theme with each theme completing the overall theme of a heart hungry for God. For example, the reading for every Monday is entitled A Hungry Heart is Surrendered and Monday's readings build on that theme. While the rest of the week are a Hungry Heart is Intentional (Tuesday), Praying (Wednesday), Celebrating (Thursday), Needy (Friday), Sharing (Saturday). Each reading begins with a personal story by the author to pull you into the story and then ends with a scriptural truth and application that the author pulls from her life. Very relate able. To be honest I wanted to just sit and keep reading instead of only reading the day's portion.
From a purely aesthetic perspective, the book is classy but simple, and includes a ribbon for marking your page. The only criticism I could offer at all is that the yellow font for the Bible verses at the end of each day's reading were a little difficult to read, but that may be due to the lightening in my house.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
Three words I would use to describe Devotions for the Hungry Heart are: real, readable, and relatable. Reading this lovely devotional, which, by the way, has a beautiful cover, is a pure delight. Shellie’s writing style makes you feel like you’re having a heart-to-heart chat with an old friend. Her words come from someone who has experienced a real one-on-one relationship with Jesus. Written in a casual and comfortably readable style, it’s very easy to relate to the things that she has to tell us about her relationship with a God she has come to love and trust. I read this book in a fairly short amount of time, both because I intended to review it, and also because once I started, I just couldn’t put it down. I was delighted to find the delicious recipes and beautiful photographs in the middle of the book. Although it would have been a great book even without them, they were a fun and welcome bonus! This would make a great gift for a friend! I now look forward to taking my time and rereading this devotional on a regular basis. I love also, that it is divided into themes that I can easily access when I’m dealing with a particular issue. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are mine alone.
The word that kept coming to mind as I read this devotional was "HOMESPUN." Every page rings with truth straight from Scripture and the author's tender heart. This was my first exposure to Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, and she is everything you'd expect a real Southern Belle to be - warm, sweet, enthusiastic, and just a little bit sassy. Each topic resonates with her honest struggles to know and imitate Jesus better. The book covers 20 weeks of devotions, Mondays through Saturdays (hence the subtitle, 'Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday'). Each week follows the same pattern, illustrating that a happy heart is surrendered, intentional, praying, celebrating, needy, and sharing, followed by an appropriate Bible verse. I loved the compact size of this book, but found the teal and gold print a little difficult for my older eyes to focus on. The middle of the book features a dozen delicious Southern recipes with beautiful photography and easy instructions.
This volume is a real gem, and would make a fine gift for any young Christian woman looking for practical ways to deepen her faith in Jesus. Tomlinson's honesty and self-deprecating humor make each short two-page devotion easy to read and apply. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
Devotions for the Hungry Heart by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson is a 20 week long devotional containing the author's personal insights and stories in each day's devotion. Each week has six days' worth of devotions, Sundays are not included, (I assume the author felt most people reading this would go to church on Sundays and not want a devotion for Sunday, perhaps?) and each day is a two-page reading that only takes a few minutes, with a Bible verse included pertinent to that day's reading. There are also more than a dozen full-color recipes and photos included in the center, going along with the hungry theme of the book. I found myself wanting to read ahead instead of stopping at just that particular day's reading. With its unique hardback cover and its ribbon bookmark to keep track of the last page you read, this small devotional is a nice addition to your daily reading, although I would add in another one with a little more meat to get the most benefit from my daily devotions. A small negative I feel I should mention, I found the dull yellow color used for the Bible verse print to be somewhat difficult for me to read, I would have preferred a darker color but I managed if I read in a brighter-lighted room.

Shellie Rushing Tomlinson shares an engaging devotional with readers in Devotions for the Hungry Heart. Her hope in writing these daily devotional passages is that the reader would find the Christian experience to be fulfilling--an experience that God offers to all. Each of the twenty weeks covers six (Monday through Saturday) different subjects regarding the hungry (for God) heart--one that is surrendered, intentional, praying, celebrating, needy, and sharing. Each day has a Bible verse that relates to the daily devotional and occasionally there are pictures with encouraging sayings placed through the book. The book itself is beautiful with teal and gold coloring on the hardback cover and inside as well with the typeface and pictures being printed in those colors. As a special treat, in the center of the book are several full-color glossy pages with some of Shellie's personal recipes. These quick to read devotionals come from Shellie's heart and reading them seems like a face to face chat with a friend. It is a lovely book for personal use or for giving as a gift to a friend. A great book. Devotions For The Hungry Heart by Shellie Tomlinson has really been a blessing to my life. It is a beautiful small book with a ribbon to mark your page. Her style is just a little different from many devotional books but I really appreciated her thoughts. She presents witty stories from life that will draw you in and get your attention to the application that she is making to life. That’s what I liked. The stories drew me in to my sweet Jesus and His precious Word and made me want more like wanting another slice of pie. The format is a devotional for Monday through Saturday for twenty weeks. There is a scripture verse for every day. I believe that the book will speak to a hungry heart no matter what age in life or how long you have followed Christ. The print and color font can make it just a little hard to read if your eyes are not good, BUT the words on the page are worth the effort of digging in to read. Your choice could always be the eBook format if you think you could read it better. To go along with the theme of hungry, she has some delightful recipes in the center of the book. Don’t miss it. I love this little devotional book. It has twenty weeks of Monday through Saturday daily readings. The additional title at the top, Chasing Jesus Six Days from Sunday confirms that. Each day the title of that devotional: A Hungry Heart is.... is filled in with a topic. They include Sharing, Surrendered, Needy, Celebrating, and Praying among many others. A scripture is found at the end of each devotional that pertains to that one. There are scattered about a few pages with pictures and quotes. One particular one that spoke to me in light of today's news and events: "Society will never be able to restrict the words of God written on our hearts and in our actions." There's even a ribbon in the book to help keep my place ready for the next days reading. Bonus: several beautiful color pictures of food with their yummy sounding recipes are in the middle of the book. Food for the spirit as well as the body! I'll be reading this throughout the year and repeating pages over and over that have a significant meaning to me. Devotions For the Hungry Heart is small in size but oh so big in content! It is filled with 20 weeks of devotions that feature Bible scripture and personal reflections to spur a person's thoughts about their own personal walk with God. These devotions are short and they are often amusing but they never fail to motivate and inspire. Author Shellie Rushing Tomlinson has included some family recipes to satisfy physical hunger pangs but it is our spiritual hunger that this book is meant to quench. Since these devotions aren't dated they can be read anytime but don't be surprised if you find that you are unable to read just one per day. I often read several at one time because Tomlinson's writing style makes you feel as if you are actually engaged in a personal conversation.
This book is small enough to fit in your purse and its attractive, hardback cover makes it perfect for gift-giving but it is the content that makes Devotions For the Hungry Heart so special. I recommend it for all who have a "Jesus-hungry heart."
