With just a hint (ok perhaps a bit more) of irreverance, the author pokes a few needed holes in the egos of both members & non-members of the LDS church using his wit and willingness to examine the oddities of mormon life & culture and urge a bit more understandin. These are reprints of columns he has done for the local paper - most of which are wonderfully funny, some wonderfully touching, some thought provoking, and the occasional one all of the above. I'm a bit biased - I own the books! I've loaned them out on occasion and quite enjoyed the guffaws/snorts from the unsuspecting loanee as they read.

There is something funny about a Mormon poking fun at other Mormons and some of our silly traditions like green Jello. I wouldn't read this book if you are overly staunchy Mormon who is easily offended. But if you are a Mormon with a sense of humor or not a Mormon but are familiar with Mormons it is a hilarious book with some good reminders on being like Christ and not getting so stuck in what we believe. Here are some quotes from the book that made me laugh and will give you a feel for his writing style.

(On sitting through church)
"Pew squirming makes parents mad. 'Pay attention' is what they say to squirming kids, which makes about as much sense to a kid as "Breathe through your belly button." it can't be done.

"Overall packing guns into church is a bad idea. Mainly because history has proven that when it comes to human beings, religion is a dangerous weapon all by itself."

(on birth control)
"Although I come from a shamefully small Mormon family of five children, I'm not necessarily against big families. I once asked my dad, and orthodox Mormon, why he and mom didn't have more kids. He said because killing teenagers was a bigger sin than preventing their birth in the first place."

The one thing I didn't like about this book is that he kept referring to people that I have never heard of before. I assume they are famous people who were before my time which isn't hard considering I wasn't even born until 1987. I think if you know who these people are the book will be even more funny than I thought it was and I got a lot of good laughs out of this book.

Read this book if you are a Mormon, used to be a Mormon or know Mormons, it's funny funny funny.

Robert Kirby, while giving good insight, satire, and humor, still tries to go for mild shock value that is often in poor taste (ex. if he makes one more generalization about how men just want to look at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, I think I'll have to punch him). However, that said, sometimes he reveals the underside of a very constricted culture so precisely that it's almost inspiring.

Pat Bagley's comic art of Mormon culture is sometimes so painfully accurate that I can't stop laughing. At other times it falls flat (whose doesn't?). Bagley and Kirby make a great team.

A compilation of short stories that are perfect for a good quick laugh while you're sitting on the jon. ;) In my signed copy he wrote, "Enjoy - then Repent!" And his motto in all of his books is: "Angels fly because they take themselves lightly." I just love reading his stuff. Most of the time it's just funny, sometimes it even offends me a little bit, and then sometimes he makes a really good point that makes me evaluate my own habits and how seriously I OUGHT to be taking my membership in my church.

This book makes fun of Utah and its complex Latter-day Saint vs. non-Latter-day saint issues. It was amusing. If you've never lived in Utah though, you probably wouldn't get it.

Really, really funny. Had me poking my eyes to keep back the tears! Still, for those new to or not familiar with the purpose of LDS culturalisms this may a) not make sense; b) seem offensive.
