Akira is a tall tomboy who befriended a shorter, prettier boy named Makoto in elementary school. In college, they are still inseparable, and many people mistake them for a straight couple- though usually they think Akira is the boy and Makoto the girl. Makoto only adds to this confusion by frequently cross-dressing. I enjoyed the friendship and gender mix-ups, but I don't love how every single secondary character either wants to date one of the two leads, or whats to separate the two leads because their close friendship might prevent them from dating in the future. Get out of their business, randos! They are clearly on a very slow friends to lovers arc, leave them alone to figure out their shit.
This was cute. It reminds me of Cinderella Closet but with older characters, though I'd argue they kind of felt like teenagers anyway. I love how fiercely protective Makoto is of Akira. I just hope Akira develops more as a character going forward, because right now she's a little flat.
Idk why I assumed they would be in high school, but they are actually in college. Really interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress.
I fell in love with this series within the first chapter. You got two somewhat fluid teens and their friendship as they navigate their romances. Both have their problems in love because of their gender performances, one struggles to be seen a romantic interest and a young woman while constantly being pressured to change her dress which affects her self esteem. Then you have her best friend who although he likes to cross-dress doesn't like how people's positive reaction to him (as a girl) further demoralizes his friend. I can't wait to see how this plays out.
I really like the height difference and blurred gender norms that this manga plays on. The two main characters are super adorable and I am rooting them.
Akira and Makoto are childhood friends, which is heading exactly where you’re thinking. But Akira keeps getting mistaken for a guy, while Makoto is all about cross-dressing, so the path is a bit different than usual.
Well, it’s more nuanced than Crossplay Love, I’ll give it that much. And this is an interesting take on gender identity and being comfortable and accepted in your own skin, with a predictable, yet not unwelcome, love story.
However, it’s also another one of those stories that I want to like more than I do. Not because of the leads - I love how they interact together and the way that Akira is portrayed especially. Makoto is a little less interesting, which is actually about the opposite of what I expected.
No, it might just be a little too quiet for its own good. Which is an odd thing to say for something where the male lead can, yet again, pull off the most perfect female impersonation ever. But it doesn’t grip as much as I wish it did. It’s a little dry.
Still, it’s a good story and Akira’s journey is especially interesting as she definitely comes across like she hasn’t got any handle on her emotions. Watching her interactions, there’s almost an argument against childhood friends - Akira and Makoto’s inseparable nature probably played a part in her development.
That’s about the best explanation for why a university student is suddenly grappling with the first pangs of jealousy and things of that nature. Not to say anything about slow development or Akira’s presentation, but surely she’s been jealous over something at some point. Makoto is far more straightforward and doesn’t much care about the fine details - he likes Akira for Akira.
There are some decent secondary characters, including Seo, who gets along with Akira really well, but potentially has ulterior motives. That said, a lot of the story moves forward via relationship conflict of one form or another, which is kind of repetitive.
It’s okay, if unremarkable, that Makoto gets tangled up with a girl who had a crush on him. That both lets him make his point about why Akira is special while bringing the latter’s feelings closer to the surface. It’s not bad, but I feel like it keeps too much buried.
This had the unfortunate position of coming out the same week I read I Cross-Dressed For the IRL Meetup and I felt like that story made an absolute meal out of gender and identity issues. This comes across as a little more staid and traditionally dramatic.
In the end, it’s worth a read and I want the two leads to get together, so I’ll definitely keep going with it. But I hope the plotting gets more interesting because it’s cusping on dull, sadly.
3 stars - not gripping, but good, and possibly better going forward. If you like the sound of it, it’s worth a look.
Very good soap opera stuff with that bit of gender spice for flavor. Certainly has a bit of that "if they just talked it would solve everything come on!" But that's like... Every romantic drama and this isn't extremely egregious or anything. I'm enjoying it.
I really liked this, which makes me a teeny bit nervous for the rest of the series. Shoujo, especially, tends to disappoint me as it goes on - but I think the fact that it closes out in 5 volumes should make it more promising. Not as much space to throw in a bunch of love triangles and such. And there's already a lot of good self-reflection, important conversations, and nice pacing in this volume.
I've gotta be honest, I read the blurb and looked at the cover and did exactly what the majority of people in this book did: I assumed the "handsome girl" was the female-presenting pink-haired one and the "pretty boy" was the one who looked like a guy. And then got very confused in the opening convenience store scene, where pink-wigged, skirt-wearing Makoto shouted at a clerk for assuming tall, lanky, plain-looking Akira was his "boyfriend."
Akira has always been uncomfortable with girly things: she's bigger than all the other girls (and some of the guys, including Makoto), great at sports, not too interested in makeup or shopping, and convinced that she's as weird and tomboyish and unfeminine as all her classmates have said since she was a kid.
Makoto always leaped to her rescue, chasing off the mean boys and getting way madder about it than she ever did. He's also convinced that, deep down, it really does bother Akira that guys don't think of her as a girl. Despite a "trying to buy a cute pair of girly shoes" thread that carries through much of this volume, it's honestly hard to tell if Akira does want to be seen as a more feminine person. Truthfully, Makoto doesn't care either way - he's always insisted that Akira is just fine the way she is, and there's no need to change herself for other people.
After all, he's happy to cross-dress in public without it changing how he sees himself as a straight guy (at least at this point in the narrative - and it doesn't seem like that's going to change), so why does it matter if his childhood best friend "looks like a girl" or not? She's a wonderful person, and that's all that matters. And to her, he's always Makoto, no matter how he's dressed. They accept each other at the soul level. That's the important part.
The problem is, Makoto does see Akira as a girl...and has been harboring unrequited feelings for her for a long time. Years, probably. With seemingly no intention of actually telling her, since any time he remotely hints at it, she shows zero interest in him beyond their usual friendship.
Meanwhile, an assortment of extremely attractive, very desirable people fall for Makoto - in both his female and male forms - and Akira winds up as his wingwoman, much to Makoto's angry despair.
While I say that I hate shoujo love triangles, I'm actually kind of bummed that there isn't someone crushing on Akira yet. Maybe that's coming? I just think it's important for Makoto to not be her only option. I want her to choose him because she loves him, not because he's the only guy who sees her in a romantic light. Options are important sometimes.
I really liked all the characters so far, though, even the rival love interests, although Fumi's on a little bit of thin ice at the end of this volume. Hopefully she redeems herself and is able to maintain a nice girly friendship with Akira. And I hope the rest of the series is as thoughtful and fun to read as this one was.
At first, I was underwhelmed. I expected something more fun out of the premise, but the fault lies with me for walking in with the wrong expectations. The story is more nuanced than I expected. It's about their friendship as well as the suffocating gender norms that women are expected to conform to. Even though Makoto has been super supportive over the years, Akira clearly suffers from self-esteem issues. It's sad but also realistic. Finished this feeling deeply invested in their relationship. I'm rooting for them!
I'm back reading manga and this...THIS MANGA IS PURE GOLD! I' m in love like I was before when I read my old mangas. This feeling is the best. This manga is the best.
A cute gender-bent rom-com where the two college-aged leads (tall, short-haired tomboy Akira and pretty-boy Makoto) are often mistaken for the opposite gender...which only gets worse because Makoto's stylist mom & sister dressed him up so often as a kid that he often likes to cross-dress now. They are childhood friends and neighbours so close that people often mistake them for a couple (though of the wrong genders), and friends & family keep warning them that if they keep hanging out so much Akira will never get a boyfriend - though so far she has shown no interest in that regard, and anyway it soon becomes clear (to readers, if not to Akira) that Makoto has caught feelings for her. Akira's romance-cluelessness might be interpreted as ace or demi (too soon to be sure), but Makoto's situation might bother some readers with its implication that gender-fluidity is a *learned* thing (it happened BECAUSE his mom played dress-up, and wasn't something he came to by his own feelings).
If you enjoy standard rom-com things like will-they-won't-they tension and mistaken attraction or crossed attraction-lines (A likes B but B likes C, etc), especially with a realistic slow burn, this might be right up your alley. It's more warmhearted and feel-good than angsty so far and the tension is all romantic rather than sexual (no makeouts or even kissing so far).
Content concerns: no swearing, talk of college drinking parties but no habitual drunkenness, no nudity/sex so far (not even kissing), humorous misgendering but no homophobia so far (though it's clear Makoto does realize not everyone would accept his cross-dressing)
I have… mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is really nice to see two people playing with gender expectations. On the other hand… I don’t like that one was essentially forced into cross dressing before “getting used to it” and doing it on their own.
I’m also a smidge bit worried that we are gonna end up with a Societally Mandated Normal Couple. That the gender exploration isn’t them just being who they want to be, but just window dressing they finally “find confidence in themselves” to step away from.
I don’t necessarily think that is where it is going; I just will be very disappointed if that is what we get. Because I really do like the two MC’s and want to see more of them beyond their relationship with each other. I also really appreciate that Akira isn’t just a little ambiguously androgynous. She is drawn very masculine and I am here for it.
Probably more of 3 of 3.5, but rounding up for Makoto’s really excellent non toxic MMC behavior. He really seems like he is trying to help Akira have confidence and embrace everything she likes. It would be very easy for him to just be pushing her towards the “actually I wanted to be feminine all along, but didn’t think I could pull it off” that I am afraid of.
I wasn’t sure what I was walking into this manga. Was is about a boy just dressing as a girl or was there more to it.
Akira is a girl that looks very handsome and is most of the time mistaken as a boy. Makoto is a beautiful boy that from a very young age enjoys dressing in both male and female clothing.
This is very much a story of discovering and self expression. Akira may be the tomboy but still has a desire to express their female side. Makoto is confident in their sexuality that it doesn’t matter if he is dress male or female they are still themselves.
When a crush confesses to Makoto their feeling how will Akira feel about this. They have been close childhood friends and have never had a problem before.
I really enjoyed this story so far. As a woman that was very much a tomboy growing up a can relate to Akira so much. I can’t wait for the next volume to see if Makoto finally has the gust to tell his long time friend his feelings or is he just going to keep waiting to see if Akira finally see it for herself.

technically this dropped at the 25th of december 2016 but i’ll cheat my way into pretending i only started reading it properly in 2017 (technically only added it to my list in 2017) to be closer to the challenge cause I’m that petty.
anyways,
AHHHH A GOOD SHOUJO ITS BEEN A WHILE! lately all my go to shoujo mangas are ones from the golden age cause the current shoujo lacks diversity in plots, not that this one has a completely new story i still think manhwas are where you can get your proper share of rom coms lately but it’s done well so I’m thankful.
let’s go a long way Saku sensei, i have faith in you
I was so happy when news of an official English translation came out and I had to run to pre-order this and I am so glad I did. It had been a while since I re-read the first volume and it did not disappoint. The first volume just reminded me of how good the series is. A lot of series with the same reverse couple type have angst over the couple being so different from societal expectations but Otonari Complex portrays them as accepting of themselves. The inner work that a lot of series with the same theme have the main characters go through is seemingly completed already in Otonari Complex and allows us to truly focus on the romance.
If I had a nickel for every time I read/watched something with a cross dressing boy named Makoto I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it is strange that it happened twice.
I like the dynamic between Makoto and Akira but I’m also like girl stand up for yourself, don’t let these other people use you like that! Granted, I would probably do the same thing because I’m a conflict avoidant people pleaser but I want her to be better than me haha. Seo and Fumi made me mad, especially since I initially thought Fumi took things okay and then she had to go and ruin it.

Are these two denser than a fruitcake? Well, one of them is, but Akira's emotional illiteracy comes from a believable place; her insecurities of being "insufficiently female" despite being biologically and identity-wise female definitely play a large role. This may not do the best job in the world of coping with social perceptions of gender, but it's really trying, and I like our leads enough to want to see them get together.
3.5★ - good strong start to the series, though it's a bit too one sided for me to really enjoy for now. I absolutely LOVE akira!!!! then there's makoto....who is great. but SO DENSE lol. so far, it's a good exploration of their characters and relationship, but at this point makoto is so clueless and doesn't feel anything towards akira besides a little bit of attachment as a friend. if the next volume doesn't show some progress, I may give up lol ლ(ಠ_ಠლ)

Hmm this felt very much okay. The art was enjoyable but I do think that Akira's character doesn't seem as deep as Makoto so I hope that her character gets more. Right now she is a pretty big push over and concerned about outside people's concerns more than her bestie's and I don't like that. Makoto seems to understand how he feels more about Akira but I don't like that he kind of gives in to her insecurities towards others.
This is an interesting manga so far and I like everything I’m reading, but I just wasn’t expecting the number of chapters so it was a lot to take in. I really like that despite their differences in personalities, Akira and Makoto have a nice dynamic. Some of the chapters had flashbacks to their childhood to better show the extent of their deep friendship which was very adorable to see. With the way this volume ended, I’m very curious to see what happens between Akira and Makoto next.
I saw this at a fair in my College and the cover called me but when I read the back I was intrigued. Glad to make this the first book I read in 2025 cause they're just adorableeee. Their relationship is very well written and it's realistic how everyone around them acts which was very nice. Now I need to get the second one AHHHH ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cute childhood friends now college aged with an oblivious (handsome) girl and a pining (sometimes cross-dressing) boy. The art is lovely if not particularly exciting. I’m invested in the feelings reveal but the girl is so oblivious I don’t expect it’ll happen any time soon even with the cliffhanger ending about the feelings.
I really like how this series explores gender and what it means to the two main characters. I was definitely drawn into this story immediately, and I can't wait to see what happens with these characters.
ok so i didn't actually read THIS, i read childhood friend complex on webtoon but i'll just use this as a placeholder
the season ending was insane and so mean, i feel hard done by mincheol needs to get out of his head and ignore the purple-haired mf anyways, waiting for s2 now
