Here comes our mail. Thank you, mail carrier! See how clean our street is. Thank you, garbage collector! Say hello to everyone in the neighborhood. We all help one another out. Tour around town in a book that's INDESTRUCTIBLE.
This book is not a scam but also kinda feels like a scam to me. There is all this hype around it being indestructable and, yes, my child has twisted and turned it every which way he can think of while not destroying it. But while it hasn't ripped or anything, it is bent incredibly out of shape. Destroyed? No. Looks like a crumpled piece of trash? Yes. Frankly I think boardbooks still have this concept beat. Beyond that the story is super simple and short. I would rather have checked this out at the library then spent money on this fad.
I read this for my Community Helper storytime. We have a set, so each child got to hold the book and "read along." The indestructible aspect makes it easy to use in storytime and I didn't have to worry that the pages/covers would get torn. The text is light and the illustrations have a lot going on, so this would work well as a picture walk book too.
For: readers looking for a simple Community Helper book.
Possible red flags: some readers may find the book too short.
No idea why this isn’t called the title printed on the front. It was tricky to find! Anyway, the toddler loves it. I find it very lightweight and portable. I appreciate the multiethnic neighborhood and the city services that are familiar to our family. I would have also appreciated a grocery store and a library.
This book shows a neighborhood with people, places and activity that make a community unique. In the classroom I can use this to compare and contrast communities as well as build understanding of community.
