If a person needs to reflect about how indigenous people in small rural communities have been treated by a colonial society, this is a book worth reading. The author recounts his experiences in northwest BC and on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where his governmental responsibility for the well-being of children on small reserves and their education often conflicted with the responsibilities and needs of their families at home on reserves.. At the crux of the book, the author non-judgementally recounts and reflects his experiences, the different ways that two cultures see the world and their needs in it. A wonderful book, a thoughtful read, and an archives of life in the 1970s in rural BC. He learned to listen, to deeply care and to wonder about the wisdom of government initiatives that destroy a way of life that has continued for centuries. I highly recommend it.

Picked up this book whilst in Jasper National park in canada in 2019. Just a great but sad read about how the First Nation people were treated by the first white settlers and their attempt to try and integrate into their society

A great perspective into life in the North West of BC by John F. Gibson. He worked with First Nations people.
