The Case of the Troublesome Lady
It’s a blustery day in late fall, and Hank decides to sneak into the back of Slim’s pickup and hitch a ride with the cowboys to a neighbor’s fall branding. However, instead of running into either Miss Viola or the beautiful Miss Beulah the Collie, as he’d hoped, Hank finds himself on Baxter’s ranch! Things aren’t all bad though, since Baxter happens to be the very cowboy who owns the gorgeous Miss Scamper the Beagle! Unfortunately for Hank, Miss Scamper has always been a little hard to figure out, and he can’t decide if she’s crazy about him…or just plain crazy. And, as the day unfolds, it even begins to look like she’s angling to land him in a heap of trouble with her pit bull boyfriend, Steel!

Hank the Cowdog made his debut in the pages of The Cattleman, a magazine for adults, and when Erickson started getting "Dear Hank" letters, he knew he was onto something. So in 1983, he self-published 2,000 copies of The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, and they sold out in 6 weeks.
When teachers began inviting Erickson to their schools, Hank found his most eager fans. Teachers, librarians, and students alike love Hank. According to some Texas Library Association surveys, the Hank the Cowdog books are the most popular selections in many libraries' children's sections. The lively characters make excellent material for reading and writing lessons, and turn even the most reluctant readers into avid Hank-fans.

We are Hank the Cowdog fans, but this was not one of our favorites.

I love this kid series. Hank the cow dog is hilarious, and sometimes, I just need a quick and fun read like this one.

Disclaimer: I grew up with John Ericson in the Texas panhandle town of Perryton. After more than 35 years of publishing the longest running single-authored series of children’s books, John does not need me to root for him. But I will. Hank is a loveable guy who is often in trouble, often of his own making. This time he stows away in the bed of Slim’s pickup to help with the fall branding at a neighboring ranch. The trouble begins when he flirts with a beagle whose boyfriend is a pit bull. Hank’s tales as head of ranch security are great to read to kids because even sleepy parents will be entertained. Most kids will be able to read them themselves and have fun feeling superior to Hank, who often gets words wrong he must correct. If you can, get John’s audiobook version. He performs Hank’s adventures better than anybody.
