Should she believe a stranger's words?

Lissa had never heard of Luc Ferrier before. But he was well-known as Lucifer at the hotel casino where she worked.

Sheila Ann Mary Coates Holland
aka Sheila Holland, Sheila Coates, Charlotte Lamb, Sheila Lancaster, Victoria Woolf, Laura Hardy

Sheila Ann Mary Coates was born on 1937 in Essex, England, just before the Second World War in the East End of London. As a child, she was moved from relative to relative to escape the bombings of World War II. Sheila attended the Ursuline Convent for Girls. On leaving school at 16, the convent-educated author worked for the Bank of England as a clerk. Sheila continued her education by taking advantage of the B of E's enormous library during her lunch breaks and after work. She later worked as a secretary for the BBC. While there, she met and married Richard Holland, a political reporter. A voracious reader of romance novels, she began writing at her husband's suggestion. She wrote her first book in three days with three children underfoot! In between raising her five children (including a set of twins), Charlotte wrote several more novels. She used both her married and maiden names, Sheila Holland and Sheila Coates, before her first novel as Charlotte Lamb, Follow a Stranger, was published by Mills & Boon in 1973. She also used the pennames: Sheila Lancaster, Victoria Wolf and Laura Hardy. Sheila was a true revolutionary in the field of romance writing. One of the first writers to explore the boundaries of sexual desire, her novels often reflected the forefront of the "sexual revolution" of the 1970s. Her books touched on then-taboo subjects such as child abuse and rape, and she created sexually confident - even dominant - heroines. She was also one of the first to create a modern romantic heroine: independent, imperfect, and perfectly capable of initiating a sexual or romantic relationship. A prolific author, Sheila penned more than 160 novels, most of them for Mills & Boon. Known for her swiftness as well as for her skill in writing, Sheila typically wrote a minimum of two thousand words per day, working from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. While she once finished a full-length novel in four days, she herself pegged her average speed at two weeks to complete a full novel. Since 1977, Sheila had been living on the Isle of Man as a tax exile with her husband and four of their five children: Michael Holland, Sarah Holland, Jane Holland, Charlotte Holland and David Holland. Sheila passed away on October 8, 2000 in her baronial-style home 'Crogga' on the Island. She is greatly missed by her many fans, and by the romance writing community.

3.5 stars... because the poor creature twice Lissa's age is irrevocably obsessed with her and is ready to make use of every trick in the book to rip her from her fiancé's equally ruthless clutches. 🥵

— No tengo intenciones de irme a la cama con usted, señor Ferrier, así que puede olvidarlo…
Él se echó a reír.
—¡Qué optimista eres!

Not Luc laughing and calling Lissa OPTIMISTIC 😂 for indulging herself with asinine notion that he wouldn't be able to get her into his bed. 🥵🙏🏻

😩🥵

If Ms. Lamb had been still alive, I'd have asked her why she had to create a couple with such an explosive chemistry only to make them wait until the wedding night to sate their urges and leave it to our imagination what and, more importantly, how the what happens after the wedding proposal? 🥲 *insert multiple exclamation marks*

Otherwise, a beautiful, intriguing, suspenseful and PLATONIC 🥲 story with intense kisses scattered all over it to keep us breathing, set in a small island. 🖤

Charlotte Lamb does romantic suspense, and it's fabulous! Seriously, it was as good as any of those Great Linda Howard covert agent numbers. I just wished she had been able to push the envelope further into a full length suspense story. Because of the constraints of the Harlequin format, she unfortunately had to cut it short at a crucial moment ().

I loved the twists and turns that she gave to her characters. You get the typical set-up of a potential love triangle then she pulls the rug from under you. Everybody is duplicitous, you don't know who to trust or believe, and incredibly, I didn't know where the writer was going to take her characters next. (.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 - I loved the obsessed jealous/possessive H. He takes one look at the h, who is almost half his age, and he’s immediately smitten. He steals her away, like a pirate, from her cheating casino gangster fiancé. We get several forced Torrid Embraces. It was a good time. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bottom Line? I would have given it a higher rating if they had actually done the deed… there was a lot of teasing that the Hero was ready to Take What He Wanted, but no follow through. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

⚠️SAFETY SQUAD SPOILERS⚠️

- no cheating or sharing between the MCs - the h and H kiss and make-out while the h is engaged to OM

- dubcon- several forced seduction embraces

- OW drama - the h sees the H sitting at a restaurant with a woman and gets jealous - later he goes to the OW’s hotel room as a cover to fool the h’s fiancé when the h and H are almost caught kissing, but it’s not made clear if anything happens while he’s with the OW (probably not - he’s pretty smitten, but the h is unsure)

- OM drama - the h is engaged - the H is jealous

- h is a 20 yr old virgin

- the H is 37 and experienced but he’s not painted as a
manwhore.

- no actual intercourse takes place in the pages of this book

This one was great.

Been a while since i read it but as soon as i read the synopsis some memories started to return. Lissa was a great heroine and our hero Luc very dashing and calculating. Not really as vindictive and ruthless as Lamb`s other notorious heroes but there was this subtle charm and dazzling sex appeal to him.

Nice but unmemorable little story. Noteworthy elements: No Other Woman present here at all and a passionate, handsome, criminally dangerous Other Man. Hero helps heroine escape from mafioso-like OM's island and they live happily ever after.

Cute parts:
"You don't hate it when I touch you. I know you say you do, but your body tells me something very different."
"My body's a liar, then!"
"No, Lissa, you're the liar."

"You're too young and I'd be a swine if I married you. You ought to marry someone of your own age, someone suitable."
"I'll start looking around for someone."
"You damned well won't. You'll marry me, Lissa, however insane it may be- because if you go away, I couldn't stand it."

Well this one fairly throbs with sexual tension. Virginal ingenue Lissa is 20 and a whole 17 years younger than our buccaneering financier/gambler H Luc Ferrier (aka Lucifer). It's full of passionate kisses so a bit disappointing that we get one of those annoying "now that I've asked you to marry me, let's wait til after the wedding" endings. Noooooo!!! This guy definitely had the it factor. Anyhow, she's a singer in a hotel on the tropical island she's always lived on. The hotel owner is her fiance. She's orphaned and his family took care of her and she's sleepwalked into a relationship with the man she always felt was like a brother but who turns out to be a nasty piece of work. There is a casino and a dog called Fortune which she takes away with her on Luc's yacht when she flees but which seems magically to disappear when no longer needed as a plot device (rescuing it from the waves is how the H and h first meet and nighttime dogwalks are how they keep meeting each other on the beach). This was decidedly vintage, of the 'awakening a virgin' trope, which may or may not be to your liking. I liked it, although I am assiduously ignoring the age gap and her age, obvs.

"Compulsion" is the story of Luc and Lissa.
Lissa works in a hotel casino for her fiancee Chris, and works their as an evening singer. She has known Chris since childhood, and when he eventually proposes she accepts, not noticing the kid gloves he and everyone around him treats her with.
Her illusions are shattered when the notorious gambler Luc enters her life and takes a liking to her, showing her the truth about her fiancee with a lot of bruising kisses, and ultimately whisks her away.
Good story with atypically low angst, devoted hero and an innocent heroine. CL has done this plot many times before, but this time it was executed well.

Lissa was utterly content with her life in St Lerie Island where she lived most of her life and got engaged to Chris, her childhood friend. Yet the arrival of Lucifer, Luc Ferrier, the famous gambler to the island changed everything. From the moment he rescued her foolish dog from almost drowning, he opened her eyes to her being a women and not a child anymore. Every time she collided with Luc, she knew more disturbing things about Chris and the island. She was against her will attracted to Luk, yet she was unwilling to pay the cost he was demanding for helping her.

The plot is a mixture of romance, thriller and adventure, yet it's so much engrossing and enjoyable. I loved the development of events and characters, but I would have loved it much more if Chris was punished. The last chapter is romantic enough, yet I thought that Lissa should have told Luk more about her feelings towards him, especially concerning her part in helping him with the gamble in the island with Chris. Nevertheless, I recommend this book by all means. :)

Wasn't bad, kind of a coming of age novel. There was a huge amount of drama surrounding the heroine and the hero was a knight in shining armor.

Generally these one word title story are a hoot. Very compelling stories. This one is compelling no doubt but flawed too.

It was a good read while it lasted, but paled in retrospect. Too unreal to be relatable for one thing.

The girl is a 20 year old cocooned island dweller straight out of the convent. Her guardian cum childhood friend cum fiancee is a rogue, a thug. He runs his nefarious business on the island behind the facade of a hotel.

The hero is a 37 year old gambler arrived on holiday. Loses his marbles over the 20 year old girl in a bikini , on Day 1 !!!! The rest of the story is just his mad pursuit of the girl. First saving her from the bad boy fiance. And then winning her for himself.

The methods he uses to get her on his side are just pushy, overt sexual encounters. The girl surely likes them but is bewildered too. Convent girl , remember ??

She figures out with the hero'es help that the fiance is up to no good. So flees her island with the hero. But now she is stuck with Rowdy #2 , the hero !!

The hero actually is a disgustingly respectable merchant banker. He was just living it up in the island, sailing , gambling !!!

What's more ! He makes the most ardent confession about why he tried to use a little force to seduce the girl. He felt the age difference between them was a big bother, and that very shortly she will tire of him !!! Fair point actually.

The girl when she hears the magical word 'marriage' from him, instead of the dreaded 'mistress' word, she is all song and dance. And vows to never tire of him.

Well, such, crazy unreal stories are meant to be just a fantasy read. Its foolish to think if such lead pairs will stand the test of time.

So I give up my rational, sensible self. And willingly succumb to his crazy non-sense !!!!

Ok. Nothing wrong, nothing memorable. I liked it quite a bit. Though I would have liked a confrontation with or a word of what happened on that front. The hero was different in a way from the other heroes of the author. He had BLUE eyes! Really, I thought CL identified her heroes by gray eyes...lol. Maybe I will come across a blond hero someday... gasp! The heroine was nice enough too. Quite reasonable, a bit blind not to have noticed certain things about her fiancé but fine. She’s young.

I also enjoyed the Caribbean setting, in the resort casino. It was a pleasant read.

Unrelated to the rating, personal comment:

I think I’ve had my fill of heroines that don’t want to sleep with the hero for stupid reasons. Fun in small doses. I need this lady from The Temporary Wife

"You should be asleep," he told her.
"I have counted all the sheep in England," she said. "I had just started on those of Wales when you spoke. Now I shall have to begin all over again."
"There is another way," he said. "If sheep have not achieved their purpose and the bed has failed to lull you, I am willing to offer my services."
"Oh," was all she said.
"If you wish to try it," he said. "If you do not, we will address ourselves to sleep again and perhaps try the greater tedium of counting sheep's legs."
"Yes," she said in a whisper.

My first Charlotte lamb book and lemme tell you:

Despite the disappointment which was the h suffering typical betrayal body syndrome, she was the epitome of ✨put a ring on it before you get the ting✨ and I was so here for it🤪 this man was losing his mind yearning for her until he couldn’t take anymore and proposed 💍🥰
Lissa really said: don’t work for it make him work for you 👑💅🏻🎀
Miss girl didn’t even know she had him wrapped around her pretty little finger🤭 her ignorance of how much she had him whipped for her made this all the more enjoyable 🤤
h who walk the H like a dog without even realizing it >

I also really loved how cynical she was of him and not like the stupid heroins who trust a random dude bc he’s attractive (like?)
It drove him crazy but like he asked for it when he kept trying to seduce her like sir what did you expect?

Ugh I enjoyed this so much more than the excuse of romances they write these days😩

The only reason why I didn’t give it five stars was bc this is a clean romance😞. Which I don’t hate in books but I def hate it in this one…this just isn’t the set up for a clean romance like ugh common now you can’t have plot character setting and all the jazz done well without the flavour of spice🥹 #ihateblandfood

But all in all I enjoyed this so thoroughly and I’ll probably read more Charlotte lamb books in the future 😮‍💨❤️

The story opens and closes with a rescue.

Beautiful, virginal heroine wakes up from her dream of a marriage to an honest, upright casino owner (LOL) after meeting the much older businessman/gambler/adventurer hero on the beach. (Where they rescue a dog)

It takes awhile for the heroine to wake up to her true situation (basically a hostage of her cheating, lawless fiance), but CL keeps the suspense up as she meters out new information.

Is the hero a cheat? Trustworthy? Heroine hasn't been the best judge of character when picking a fiance, so she is unsure of her instincts.

Hero has to strong arm her to England on his yacht (this is a fun scene) before she realizes she has the power to rescue the hero from his grey life, just as he rescued her. It's a very abrupt ending, but typical of CL.

Good read but more far fetched than even most of CL's romances. She's innocent 20 yr old engaged to a charming man she's known all her life but doesn't feel romantic towards. He's actually a thug, runs the hotel, casino and island as his fiefdom and doesn't love but wants her. (How does one girl attract not just one but two guys who are obsessed with her?)

Our hero is a rich, successful, gambler/merchant banker who falls for her and it's mutual. He finds out everything he can about her intended and convinces her to come away with him. He intends to seduce her but she's got other ideas and spends most of the voyage back to England seasick and miserable.

Some good lines and I liked reading how she grew up suddenly and truly.

It could have been better. It just wasn't realistic for the OM to turn out to be such a villain, when the h practically worshipped him for so long as the nice guy. It seemed like the author felt she had to turn him into a creep in order to justify the h transferring her affections from him to the H. It just didn't ring true. And I didn't feel any real chemistry between the H and h, I think she had more with the OM/villain. Too bad she wasn't one of those girls who goes for the bad boys!

Not really worth reading.

I enjoyed the tension between the two characters. Love their steamy passions. Loved their banters. But throughout the ending, I was starting to get annoyed at the MC. Ending caught me off guard too and I end up wanting more. Not in a good way. (For short, bitin siya). I wished they could have just gone all the way lol. Also, idk if it's just my ebook, but it this book has a lot of typos that needs fixing.

Yep, there was plenty of sizzle between the H and h, and though they never consummated their relationship during the length of the book,, there was plenty of intetaction to keep things spicy. Love how CL can sell obsession and love and first sight!!

First, no one gets laid unfortunately. Heroine doesn't get knocked around really and the tension is minimal. Still, I liked this hero even if the heroine was a bit of a twit.

Lissa is a sweet 20 year old happily living a comfortable life until she meets Luc Ferrier, also known as Lucifer. He stirs up a passion in her that she has never felt before and reveals shocking facts about her long-term fiancé and childhood friend, Chris. Lissa finally realises the truth about Chris and realises she needs help to get away from him. Luc rescues her, but at what cost?

This was great, although it took me a moment to get past the stupid nickname of "Lucifer". The relationship between Luc and Lissa progresses at a nice pace. Lissa knows that Chris is dangerous and that she can't stay with him, but she also doesn't want to swap from one user to another. Unfortunately she does need to accept Luc's offer of help or she won't be able to leave Chris and start a new life for herself, but she has more self respect than to just go ahead and jump into bed with him. The final declarations of undying never-ending love are somewhat sudden, but I suppose that's not uncommon in category romances with limited pages. Overall I recommend this if you want a nice read.

2008 Review: Sweet... My thoughts: I loved the story it was very exciting, fast read and enjoyable. I'm kinda into the young heroine older hero. But not just that the story I thought was really good, it was almost like an adventure. And I liked it that the heroine didn't lose her values and didn't just say to heck with it, i'll be with him even if it'll hurt me, stuff like that. But of course, she didn't have to fear, the hero was totally in love with her you'll know it by the few pages to the ending, yay! Very enjoyable! I gave it four star coz I wish the book was longer!!

The heroin is young and naive, the hero, predatory, attempting several near-rapes. Their declaration of love at the end is sudden and totally focused on sex. Maybe the London bit should have been longer to show how they come to care about one another.

What I enjoyed was the description of exotic St. Lerie, a caribbean island where the heroine grows up.
