Felix C. Forrest is one of the several pseudonyms used by Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger when writing fiction. (Linebarger's "day job" was Professor of Asiatic Studies at Johns Hopkins University, among other things). Linebarger's science fiction work, written under the pseudonym "Cordwainer Smith", is by far the best known and the most warmly received of all his fiction. "Smith's" work has drawn a large fan base, among which I number myself, of sufficient note that all his science fiction has been republished within the last ten years, despite the fact he died 50 years ago..
Ria is Linebarger's first published work of fiction (1947). As a story it is very slow-moving and in general is not nearly as polished as his science fiction work. I would rate it with two stars as it stands. What makes it more interesting is that it is a foreshadowing of the style and talent Linebarger would later reveal as Cordwainer Smith. Fans of Cordwainer Smith may find this book an interesting read for the same reason I did.
