For the new big sister or big brother, the author of the six Nicky books describes things the whole family can do for the baby, with a simple, rhythmic text and bright cut-paper illustrations.
Genre: Contemporary realistic fiction Grade: Kindergarten Although I think this book would be a good book for parents of a young child to read to their child if they are expecting a baby, I don't think this book is a good fit for a classroom. Although this book has good illustrations and could be useful to parents, it has very little words and not much of a story line. I don't think this book would connect well to any curriculum in a kindergarten setting and it would not be a very interesting book to read aloud for a class. This book seems ot be more of an informational book for parents to read at home, rather than a book for a class to read. But at least I know a suggestion to make for any parents who may ask in the future.
This is a wonderful story about a new baby in the family. The parents tell the older sibling about the joys of having a new baby. The most important thing is that the family loves the baby and that the baby loves the family The illustrations are done in pastel colors that are typically associated with babies. The family featured in the story is made from cut paper. The multicultural family is depicted doing many things with the baby together as a family. This book is an excellent choice for parents to read to their children when a new baby is expected in the family. The story is too simply to be used in a storytime environment, but children will love reading this story in a one-on-one environment.
A simple and basic baby prep book. The words are repetitive and simple for the youngest readers. Many activities about how to care for the baby are illustrated, and the older child is always present, even if not helping. Pluses, the older child is pretty gender neutral as is the baby and the feeding of the baby is breastfeeding (well, plus for me).
Natalie really took to this book. She asks to read it several times a day. I'm not sure if it is because she in general likes babies or because she is starting to understand that we are going to have one (Its still more than three months away).
A beautifully illustrated books showing an older sibling involved in the new baby's care. I love that the toddler is shown as being an integral part of the family, while acknowledging the responsibilities a new baby brings. An ideal introduction to a new sibling for toddlers!
Special aspects worth mentioning is the delightfully multiracial family, the gender neutrality of the children, and the equal involvement of both parents in childcare.
This book was very basic. I don't believe that a lot of children would like this book, it is not intricate enough within it's literature to cause children to be engaged by the book. It was not a very detailed book and I did not like it very much. But I do believe that it could open up the mind to children who's families are about to have a new member and how they treat their new loved one.
This book is a little more simplistic in its approach than I had hoped, but Edward loves it: I just hope it does its part in helping to prepare him for our forthcoming arrival!
