Samplerman is one of the incarnations of the cartoonist Yvang, a collagist experimenting ad infinitum. His surrealist non-stories have been featured in many publications like š!, Off Life, Smoke Signal, Ink Brick, Lagon, The Village Voice, and Scratches. The featured pages were made between 2012 and 2015 and are for the first time collected as a book.
Samplerman (the nom de plume for French cartoonist Yvan Guillo) has carved out for himself a penchant for repurposing retro comic book art with vivid new colors that add new dimension to the pieces. The blend of retro with modern has an often dizzying sensibility to them, an off-kilter feeling that makes one question what exactly this new style is meant to convey. His recent collection published by kuš!,Fearless Colors, carries with it a wide range of pieces that don't convey an overall message or narrative, though one still gets that there is a rhythm to their assembly. There's something of a momentum that builds with Fearless Colors, but ultimately one really is just looking at what is a jumble of surreal nonsense that is equal parts awe-inspiring as it is confusing.
