Convergence #1

Torn Apart

Rate this book
As a priestess in the service of the dragon goddess, Halea must roam the land hunting demons and sealing tears caused by the Chaos Dimension that seeks to converge with their world. She has sworn an oath to devote herself only to her goddess, and if necessary, will even die for her mission.

One day she discovers that her beloved childhood friend, Varg, has survived the devastation of the last convergence and has since risen to become the alpha of his people, the lycans. Together they battle the forces of Chaos, but when Varg wants Halea to be his mate, she is torn between her oath and her desire to be with the Wolf King who loves her. Only a blood sacrifice can stop the coming of the next convergence, and with Halea’s life on the line, Varg will do anything to save her.

* This is one of the #SPFBO entries I am reading as a judge this year *

I'd put this into the paranormal romance/fantasy romp category, not an area I often read or enjoy, but this book surprised me. It's well written and it stands out as a story which has a lot of potential and depth unlike some of the other books I have read in this subgenre. I definitely feel like the cover put me off more than anything because the story itself was strong, if a bit of a romp at times!

There's inter-species relationships, worldwide war between dimensions, magical shape-shifters and priestesses. A lot of magic is usually a recipe for a good story in my mind, and this title definitely had some solid themes and moments. The rift and tears into the Chaos dimension caused quite the stir and were a rather large plot point which I enjoyed.

This is a sexy book too, it's not just a loving relationship at the centre of this but also a feisty one. Lyceon wolves seem to have quote the appetite and out main characters are no exception. Humans and wolves never usually coexist well let alone mate, but there's always an outcast and someone to disprove the rule.

Overall, a fun story if a bit more boisterous than expected. I liked it and I think it's a fine escapist story if you like paranormal. 3.75*s which is 7.5/10 overall for #SPFBO.

The old saying that one shouldn't judge a book by its cover must have been created specifically for this book.

Had I saw this book on the book shelf, i probably wouldn't give it a second glance after the initial snicker. So perhaps it's a good thing that NetGalley offers the title up for free reading because I took up the offer. I mean, how can i resist satiating my curiosity with the need to know what lurks behind the *ahem* interesting cover.

Boy, am I glad that I did because the story is genuinely good. I am sucker for a good paranormal/fantasy romance and this is right up my alley. Add that with childhood friends-turn-lover storyline, I am pretty much hook with no reason to wiggle away.

I like Halea from the start. I find her vulnurablity, after being shunned away by other children for being different, endearing. That tugged the heart of my strings a little. For me, Halea is the strength of this story. Varg is strong and all, and I do love the lycan world that the author has created. this is not my first lycan story and I am already somewhat familiar with the whole mate-for-life stuff. But it is still nice to be explained about it because it made me feel as if I am now part of their world.

Lord Anshar is an interesting character. I am somewhat sad with the ending but reading the synopsis for book 2 made me nervous. I am #teamAnshar just because sometimes Varg annoys me. But i do not know where my loyalty will lies in book 2.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the online copy. All thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed this book. I was sucked into this other world and captivated by the characters. The cover gives the impression of something different, but seriously, read it.

This was...okay.

I was invested in the overall plot for some reason, so I got through this pretty quickly (comparatively; I don't have a lot of free time so I often only read a bit before bed, unfortunately).

HOWEVER... I don't think a single second was spent on editing this book. Every page was riddled with comma splices and run-on sentences that could give my middle school students a run for their money. Just one example: "When packs arrived for a gathering, they brought as many able-bodied pack members as possible, but they did not bring every pack member, some could not make the journey, such as mothers with young cubs, and many would also remain to guard their den and defend the territory." This was nearly constant. Every page, ten times.

Halea was an okay character when she wasn't randomly spineless; I liked her most of the time, but I hated Varg (and his stupid-ass name) most of the time. Varg goes on and on about how he "can't take her dreams away from her" and then does everything possible to get his way in every aspect of their relationship, including forcing said relationship to become a thing.

I liked a lot of the supporting characters well enough, and, as I said, the plot kept me interested for some reason. I guess because it had elements that reminded me of some of my favorite media from my youth (though it's not even comparable to them, honestly), such as InuYasha and Final Fantasy X. The whole lycan/priestess thing made me think of Kouga and Kagome, not to mention all of the demons. The "sacrifice someone but the evil is gonna come back again anyway" thing reminded me of FFX, which is my favorite game. These are really just small elements that likely kept me invested, as the book isn't really like InuYasha nor FFX. It's definitely its own thing, which is good.

After reading the synopsis for the second book, I'm not sure I want to read it for a number of reasons, one of which being that I liked Anshar. Plus, I don't think I can stand any more of these atrocious run-on sentences. Or Varg. He really sucks.

One thing to note: I read the ebook version of this because it was a Kindle daily deal that popped for me one day. I don't generally read adult romance, but the synopsis was interesting and it was cheap. Regarding the cover: the ebook one is just like, text and vines or something, not the one with the two main characters used here on GR. There are a lot of reviews for this book saying that the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" really applies here, but I think the GR cover is accurate. Oof.

This has all the ingredients required to craft a mystical fantasy series
The world-building was masterfully crafted (different realms with almost an old-world feel to it)
The different belief systems and species unique but familiar (shifters and witches and demons)
The three main characters were vivid and easy to get attached to Halea - our priestess is a solid lead female. She is smart highly observant not only of her surroundings but of the people and their emotions - almost an empath in the way she reads others
Varg - is a wolf therian who befriends Halea when she is young. He is a bit arrogant but that seems to be natural among his kind (His personality is almost animalistic in its baser traits it is hard to explain) His connection with Halea goes beyond just friends
Lord Anshar - our dragon therian and the direct link to the goddess. I feel a bit sorry for him in many ways

How do I do this without spoiling anything?
This first book sets the foundation for the series.
Heavy on the action and adventure, a lot of OMG moments blended with some light angst and romance
The supporting characters are just as vivid as the main. Watch the little details they make a major impact as the story progresses.
The relationship between Varg and Halea is a slow build with quite a few obstacles for them to face
As for Lord Anshar and Halea? Yea - I am not telling

The author does a terrific job of transporting the reader into her world. I felt like I was a part of the story. I felt the elation when things were good and the loss when tragedy struck.

This ends in a bit of a quandary for our main characters I am excited to see which direction the next book takes though a bit hesitant at the same time

I went into this story not knowing much except some of the tropes that were included. I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The world building was great and it didn't feel like you were bombarded with too much information. The first few chapters focused on the childhood friendship between Halea and Varg and I felt this was important to show the strong bond they formed before we see them again as adults.

I haven't read a lot of stories with Lycan but I'm familiar with mates and I truly enjoyed seeing the romance develop between the characters. It was steamy without overtaking the story and the end has also left me wondering....about another certain character.

This also isn't a long book and I was able to devour it in less than a day but I didn't feel as though the story was rushed. I look forward in continuing the rest of the books!

This was such a great story! Halea is blessed and destined to become a priestess. The other kids are scared of her and become cruel. Varg has lost his mother and his father has retreated emotionally. They both go to the forest and meet unexpectedly. The growth of their love from childhood to adults is beautiful. Their love for each other comes through all of their actions. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.

This was an amazing read. I loved the characters and setting. I feel like Halea was a great combination of strong, soft, stubborn and caring. You couldn't help but root for her throughout. The author did a great job at setting up the world in detail. It was creative and suspenseful, I feel like the romance was a perfect balance to enhance but not overwhelm the story line. The ending made me super excited to start book II. Tried not to give up book details or spoilers.

This book was so much fun! Just because I take 4-6 months to read a book doesn't necessarily mean I DMFed it, and from the very start I knew I would enjoy this book.

A brief synopsis is this: Halea is a human girl who was born with nascent priestess superpowers from the dragon goddess Tiamet. She can run fast, heal injuries a bit faster than normal and punch really hard. Without training, she would live a normal life but as a slightly stronger and resilient human. For better or worse, her uncle is a cleric of the Tiamet order and feels very proud that his own descendant was chosen and is just waiting for her to get older to begin her training as a formal priestess that will be granted immortality in exchange she might end up chosen as the sacrifice for a magical ritual that seals the tears of the demon dimension that threatens to destroy her world.

All of these difficult revelations mean little to Halea as a child. She suffers from loneliness because she is bullied by the village kids due to her superpowers. One day, she runs away to the forest and bumps into a strange sight: locked inside of a magical barrier field designed to purify demons is a scraggly wolf-boy named Varg and she offers to release him in exchange he doesn't harm her. Humanoid demigod beasts also known as therians are a separate race that live among humans and can be of many different subspecies (wolves, cats, dragons, mermaids...). They generally dislike humans and mostly live in their own lands without disturbing anyone. Varg is the son of the current Wolf King with high expectations he will become the next ruler. However, his father is aloof and distant to him and he too feels lonely. Can two children separate their differences and find true friendship... and perhaps even love?

The book starts a bit slowly, delving into the friendship that starts to form between Varg and Halea which can drag quite a lot but it is still endearing in a way because it cements the strong bond that forms between both friends that becomes a pivoting thing when they find each other as adults.

I would not like to spoil much about the story, but even though I generally have eye rolls for urban modern paranormal fantasy, I had a lot of fun reading this book. Maybe a part is because it takes place in a medieval era and there is also a brooding and undeniably appealing dragon therian high lord named Anshar who is such a cool character, albeit I can't spoil much about him.

Varg can start to act very macho and perhaps overprotective of Halea at times, but I think the book strikes a very nice balance because Halea is very well aware of Varg's different cultural views since she knew him most of her life and understands Varg doesn't do a lot of these things out of malice but because his bestial nature pretty much forces him even though he works very hard to always remain within Halea's comfort zone. The book ends in a really high note and I would definitely like to read the second book.

*I received this book free from the author.*

Halea was born to be a priestess. It was what she'd spent her life training for. But normal humans were scared of her. Her strength. Her speed. He was not. Varg was a lycan and he just didn't like puny humans...until her.

"I've missed you so much. I'm greedy, and I don't care. I want every moment I can have with you."

Halea is dedicated to her cause, to her people, and to her heart. Just as much as Varg. Only problem she had was that a priestess couldn't have attachments. She couldn't mate with him. She had a job to do first and foremost.

Varg goes from a scrappy cub to a fierce alpha and Wolf King. He tries to be the best leader he can, but he'd sacrifice all for her. He'd lost her once, he was never losing her again.

""Varg, if you do this the world will be destroyed. There is no other way!"
"Then let the world be damned," he said as he walked away."

Their love and dedication to each other develops over the years, moving from friendship to more, especially after they both thought each other lost.

Torn Apart is a non-stop, what's going to happen next?, oh my goodness did they just do that? kind of book. However, you spend half the book getting back to where it began, which is probably why I couldn't put it down because honestly the first half is a little slow, but then it gets even more addicting.

I do have to say that it felt complete, until the last two sentences!

Pleasantly surprised by this fantastical story about a young girl who grew up different than the other children and an outcast by her peers because of her strength and otherness. Halea grew up knowing, at a young age, she would serve the dragon goddess killing demons and sealing tears to protect the world. Retreating to the forest after another failed attempt to play with neighborhood children, she crosses paths with Varg, a young shifter who is being groomed to become the next alpha to his people.
They keep their friendship hidden from their families and secretly meet in the forest. However, one night, both their families are forced to flee their homes and believe the other to be dead due to the overwhelming number of tears and Chaos Dimension breaches.
Never forgetting each other, their paths cross again years later but their lives have taken different paths which do not allow the other to be part of it.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the book description and cover but soon discovered I truly enjoyed this heart felt story about star crossed lovers defeating all odds and would recommend to others.

Do not judge this book by the book cover. I don't think the cartoon look works for this book because it makes it look like a graphic novel and it's not.

This book had so many fantasy elements that I love; magic, shifters, steamy scenes, and fights. Halea and Varg live a predestined life. Though both of them are strong and will triumphant in their chosen paths, they want to create a new one where they will both be together.  The author did an awesome job showing the beginnings of their relationship as children and how that built a firm foundation for when they were older.  The author made this world come alive it was easy to be an invisible observer as the story unfolded. These types of books, regardless of the genre, are my favorite ones to read. It was easy to connect with Halea and Varg. I wanted everything to work out in their favor from the very beginning and though I knew the author created a happy ending, I wasn't sure how it would happen until the very end. Not figuring out the ending before I read it made it more enjoyable. If you like fantasy, read this one.

Halea is destined to be Priestess of Tiamet The Dragon Goddess but that doesn't mean she doesn't have her share of trouble either. Halea befriends a lycan named Varg and the two become the best of friends. Neither of them thought their friendship was unusual or wrong. But all of that changes with The Convergence. Priestesses of Tiamet are tasked with closing the rifts. Yet something went wrong and eight years later it's still happening. Halea is a Priestess of Tiamet strongest one of her generation. She decides to visit the past and get a shock of a lifetime~Varg is alive. Varg is stunned to see Halea after all this time. Varg and Halea seem to pick up right where they left off. Many in Varg's pack distrust Priestesses but don't like demons any better. Is the convergence happening again? Will Halea admit her feelings? Your answers await you in Torn Apart.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The characters and story could come from real life even though it's fantasy. I would love to see where this story is going in future books.

Torn Apart is an engaging and layered text. The author gives enough background information about the lore in the story to keep the reader informed. The beginning of the story is sweet and paints a vivid picture of the history between the two main characters. As a person who loves children's stories I was sad for the characters to grow up because this part of the story is so inviting and sincere.

Once the characters grow up the story takes on a different quality as an action and romance text. The villians are easy to imagine and fear. You can't help but root for the progragonists and the story ends in a devilish cliffhanger.

I can't wait to read the next two books!

This book is the perfect example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. I was totally expecting a graphic novel or something cheesy. This book was amazing, one of the best I have read recently. I loved the characters and the world the author created. The way the author took you through the story from the characters childhood to the present was perfect. It allowed you to relate to the characters and really made you invested in their story. You couldn't help but root for Halea, from the time she was bullied as a kid to growing up and becoming a priestess. Her relationship with Varg was wonderful and it didn't overshadow the rest of the story. I can't wait to read book two.

This is my 1st read and review for this author and it’s such a fantastic read. Halea grew up being stronger than the other children they teased her mercilessly but she had one friend in Varg, but she knew that she will be in the dragon goddess’s service sealing the tears and killing the demons. Now years later each thought that the other family was killed when there was a tear but they meet up again and now Varg is the alpha of his pack. They still love each other and Varg tells Halea that she is his mate so now Halea is torn between love and duty. Fantastic story and I can’t wait to read book 2 and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.

Well don’t judge a book by its cover. At least not this one. Varg a lycan and Halea a human future priestess become unlikely friends, thanks to demon attacks the friends are split apart only to reunite years later. Everything is different, Halea is on a list of possible sacrifices and Varg is the leader of his pack. Mainly a love story with fighting elements and self sacrifice. Didn’t like Rafe or Maven. Felt sorry for Lord Ansher. Think I liked the healer best. Good story.

In this world, love between a priestess and a lycan is forbidden. Yet Halea and Varg have loved one another since meeting as children, first as friends and now as lovers. All while battling the influx of demons through tears or portals that the priestess and her fellow sisters are needed to close. A very intriguing and intense storyline tempered with the forbidden love affair. Nicely done!

I don't usually read werewolf books but the addition of a priestess drew me in. I love that Ms. Riddles starts the story out in present day but then goes back in time to tell us the history of the two characters. The conflict between the races of werewolf and human is well written and intriguing. The characters are well fleshed out and relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed the setting of the story and the writing, I loved the relationship between Halea and Varg, they grow up togeter and truly love eachother. If you keep an openmind you can find out that there are more many similitudes than differences between peoples, even if we look different the important values can unite us.
I didn't like the cover.

Worthy fantasy romance that has more substance than the cover suggests.
This childhood friends to lovers fantasy has true danger around every corner. The characters grow and struggle along the way.
The ending surprised me.
Some of the world building was flat, mostly telling instead of showing. The focus is more on people, their relationships, and the fight to survive.

This book was a great find. It is about long lost friends finding each other, finding love in each other and fighting for that love no matter what. I loved that even though it is a series, it didn't end in a big cliffhanger but still made me want to come back for more. Give it a shot you will not disappointed.

To be completely honest, I went into this expecting the normal cheesiness that is of this genre. However, I was very pleasantly surprised when I realized it was so much more and better than I expected. Okay, so friendship to lovers? Sign me up. Demons, lycans, priestess, magic, dragons, and more? Also sign me up! The world building was great bc I never felt confused or like it just unloaded a ton of info at once but it gave me such a good idea as to where the story was taking place and the rules for this world. Also, the plot left me stressed from start to finish. I was so worried for my babies. This book made me smile, cry, laugh and get very angry - all the good things. The emotions were so raw I felt them. The steamy bits were good too.

Now for the very few things I did not like:

1) if you are NOT into a man dominating and claiming and basically owning a woman then this book is just not for you - alpha males are not for everyone - and at points even I had to roll my eyes at some of his scenes but I get it bc he is alpha whatever he has to be this way, so it works for this story but yep just a heads up.

2) The change of POVS was too scattered. One sentence could literally be from Halea's POV and the next it would be from Varg's or even a random side character. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the multiple POVs even from the side characters but like there should have been better structure in my opinion so the reader could clearly know who was talking or thinking or doing what bc it did get a little confusing in certain parts.

I will be 100% reading the rest in this series! I recommend for shifter fans, adult romance and fantasy readers! :)
