They have been here for centuries. Their planet was destroyed by war, and they now hide among us. Malcolm Donovan, a dragon shifter, rules over one of four clans. When a clan member is murdered, he must find the killer. Nothing will disrupt his pledge to protect his clan. Nothing that is until he finds his mate.
Elsie Monroe, human to the bone, and the resort manager for the Donovan family finds herself falling in love with the charming Wyoming town, and she can't help but be drawn to the mysterious, Malcolm Donovan. His rude attitude is atrocious, but his kisses can bring chocolate to a boiling point. Not to mention what he does to her body and heart.
Soon Elsie is dragged into a world of secrecy and violence. Creatures she thought were fantasy are actually real. And she is left wondering if love will be enough to capture and tame her own personal dragon.
A beautifully well written first part of what promises to be a great series. The character development is wonderful and the plot significantly tangled and interesting that it was hard to put down. The ending was so sweet and I’m dying to get reading the next installment!
There is nothing I enjoy more than finding a new author. And this find was gold. The world building was exceptional. The characters were multi faceted, complex, sexy, interesting, and engaging. The storyline was intriguing. I enjoyed every moment of this book from first word to last. I HIGHLY recommend this book.
Fascinating book about an alien dragon shifter / human Romance
This book is fascinating story about an alien dragon shifter and his clan who are hidden from humans. The leader of this clan partners with his brother owns a hotel that caters to humans. The new manager is his human mate.
The characters are relatable, sexy, and sometimes funny. The plot has many twists and turns. The scenario about the alien race inhabiting Earth goes in depth about their history and why they move to Earth. Highly recommended. If I could give more stars to this author I would.
Actually quite a nice storyline. Characters are developed separately and not meshed too well together but the whole book has a good flow. Some of the secondary characters have good possible books that could be forthcoming. Well worth a read.
What was this ? I’m not sure but I . Would . Not . Call it a romance .
Seriously what did I just read? Malcolm,I did not remember this last name but that’s ok, because in my mind he’ll always be Malcolm “stiff as a board”, Malcolm drier that burnt toast, seriously stuffy doesn’t begin to cover this.... The moment we meet Malcolm he’s trying to figure out who killed a clan member, and he goes straight to thinking some clan is wanting a war with them, ooooooo k.... Sure his ppl are easily killed maybe but I got the feeling early on Malcolm was just dramatic like that .... Malcolm I is say was one dimensional but there wasn’t much to hm or this story, he just felt soo up tight and staid and fussy, all I could see in my minds eye when I thought of him was a expensive men’s dress shirt when it’s still in all of its packaging with all the sharp pins and bits of cardboard and paper attached all sealed up in plastic .... That’s how Malcolm felt to me all sealed up in still paper and plastic with sharp edges ready to stick out and poke, and never in a good way... Malcolm meets Elsie and immediately of course starts his push poll with her, sadly more pushing that pulling... Honestly I don’t know what to say about Elsie, she was sweet and and seemed rather nice and kind and while I wouldn’t say she was dumb in any way,she was definitely a big doormat w/Malcolm with the tiny amount of attention he paid her and how her acted towards her ( til the very of the book I’d say Malcolm only sent a few days in her company total and yet she was kinda devoted to him) that wasn’t very intelligent at all...
Ok, they meet, Malcolm feels a pull to her and is terrified ,storms off very rudely and wants his brother to fire her... ok, then proceeds find her aa times and kiss her then just storm off.. repeatedly! Then when he finally has sex with her it’s on the kitchen floor of the house she’s renting from him and once it’s over he pulls out gets dressed and just walks away ... WTH?!?!? I mean I’ve been there done that with one or both of the ppl involved wanting to deny the pull of a mate but 80% of this book is about who killed the clan member ,and them chasing their literal and figurative tails trying to figure out what happened and what’s going on ,not Elsie ... Honestly except for the times she spends with Ashley ( the clan healer and a vet in town) who suddenly and rather randomly just pops up to be her new bestie Elsie feels like an afterthought the majority of the time ,most of the story is who killed Donald the clan member ... Malcolm only seems to notice poor doormat Elsie when he’s tired and horny and somehow senses she’s around another male and is suddenly jealous ... He doesn’t try to get to know her, doesn’t spend any time wi h her til 85% of the book he treats her like a neglected booty call,he goes gets what he wants and leaves and acts like since he can’t /won’t discuss clan business with her he doesn’t have to tell her anything as he comes and goes and she just lets him... He was just a dumb jerk to me and she was a spineless doormat ,even though she barely knew him and he treated like a booty call he was possessive over, she never stood up to him or demanded more ... Then suddenly after treating her as an after thought the whole book he thinks maybe he loves her, rushes to save her and they have an HEA where suddenly they are mates and can be happy together ... No explanation about what this will mean to her,her life or life span, no connection is really ever made to her and his dragon or hell Malcolm and his dragon ... To me this was a mess, dry and boring ,no connection to the characters and I soo can’t say this is a romance, too much of an after thought for that... I won’t be keeping this..
I have two issues preventing me from giving this a better rating. First; the characters supposedly fall in love, but other than one moment of sexual play, they never laugh together, never share any real moments, have no true friendship. I think they have one real evening of conversation, which the author skips over. Second; okay, they're alien shape shifters who have all the typical shifter abilities. Yep, I know this cause the author told me. Plus, we read about the smelling and a few moments of healing and shifting... What it feels like, what ways it makes them different? They seem like typical alpha-romance types, nothing different. They could be anyone, any place, any story, and not necessarily shifters, just people. Nothing that would make it believable that they turn into animals, have alien DNA, come from another culture, planet... You name it...? Just good-looking, perfect people specimens. Oh, and one more small thing, he's the big leader, etc.. Yet we only meet a couple of other (young) characters. He must have the universe's best support staff to keep all and sundry from seeking him out, especially given the suspicions going on. (A murder kept secret, in a close-knit community, with family and friends not talking..? Uh huh... All seniors, professionals, and what not.. Are all good kicking back and letting the young leader to handle, no questions, no hurry?.. yep)
Despite all this. I did actually enjoy the story, the mystery and the intrigue. Plus, I could see the world being created within this book. It's not there yet, but I did enjoy the simple, easy read, and would be willing to read a second and see if it improved and dealt with some of the gaps.
A clan leader and dragon shifter, Malcolm, falls in lust then love with human Elsie, which is a no no in his world. A member of his clan is murdered and he and his closest security people work to solve the killing while trying to avoid a clan war. It is a well written story giving the reader some romance, mystery and excitement. If you like shifter stories you will want to read this standalone book and the series.
I actually read this book because I got an Advance Reader Copy of the second book in the series. I didn’t realise when I requested the ARC that it was a second book, but I didn’t want to read it before reading the first in the series. I’m glad I did, because it was an enjoyable read.
The book is set in the depths of Wyoming. It is the home of the Rishardans, a race of alien shifters who sought a new home after destroying theirs in endless wars. There are four clans spread around the world but the one in Wyoming is ruled over by Malcolm. He is closed off, tough, but fair and the last thing he is looking for is a distraction from his duties. He needs to keep his clan safe from discovery by the humans and safe from war with the other clans.
Elsie is a new human employee at Malcolm’s resort. She is the new hotel manager Malcolm’s brother Owen hired. The moment Malcolm sees Elsie sparks fly.
Alongside the romance, which is a bit annoying in places, there is a very good plot about an attack on the clan. Malcolm and his closest associates seek to find who attacked them and why, all in secret so a war can be prevented in at all possible. Their race tends towards being bloodthirsty in seeking revenge. Malcolm needs a cool head in order to prevent the clan screaming for retribution and heading into war.
The quality of the writing for the plot excluding the romance is what gave it 3.5 stars, if the romance had been less annoying it would have received 4 stars. Malcolm treated Elsie really poorly and with little respect and she let him because she was physically attracted to him. It’s hard to respect characters that do that. I’m hoping that the second book will improve on that aspect of the writing.
Bloodlines is a story about shifters from another planet. They live amongst the humans now, in their clans, with mostly kept separate from each other. When one of Malcolm's clan members turns up dead, he has a mystery on his hands - one that could lead to war. Add to that, he has an off-the-scale attraction to the hotel's new manager, and Malcolm's life is about to get rather complicated.
This was an easy enough read, with no major plot twists or intrigue to deal with. The 'big bad' was pretty clear from the start, but weirdly, this did not detract from the story. The biggest detraction, for me, was the so-called relationship between Malcolm and Elsie. If you add up the time they spent together, they probably weren't in each other's company for more than 24 hours throughout the book, and yet Elsie has completely fallen for him. Not only that, but she is a complete limp lettuce where he is concerned. He walks all over her, is rude to her, and only shows up when he wants sex. She is NOT okay with this (we get the monologues that tell us so), but she still "wilts" whenever he is near. Sorry, but I just didn't get their relationship at all!
The rest of it flowed easily enough. I found the supporting characters all interesting, although some of them had reputations I wasn't sure were deserved, or even why they had them. Apart from the main relationship, I found this book to be nicely written, with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow.
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *
