A wonderful peep into the past and some of its social history. Much to amuse and delight. The book has a wonderfully antiquated feel. Some might deem it old fashioned but there are some wonderful images and turns of phrase that are still worth looking at. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a wonderful jaunt into times past. It is a bit of my childhood and maybe the childhoods of those referred to in books I have read. There are poems, prose, fine paintings and even pieces of music, delicious trips into the imagination and also, to dinner parties of yore through the prose of writers of a bygone age. It is a one of a kind treasure. I would take this book to a desert island along with my book of love poems, to sustain me.

It's pretty rare to find an anthology wherein you don't find anything to like.....and to be fair, there was one Manley Hopkins poem and a couple of nice Rembrandts.....otherwise, nothing. Far too much 17th and 18th century poetry, tedious quotes from the likes of De La Mare and some pointless photographs.
I can't think anyone else will ever come looking for reviews of this, but if you do I recommend avoidance.
