If you are looking for a particular name of a German who emigrated to PA, then this is the book for you. As of 1727, PA passed a law which required all ships to list all who were aboard. This book includes those individuals who emigrated between 1727 and 1776. The author also includes as several appendices of known names prior to 1727. You can skip over the overview at the beginning; there isn't anything there that hasn't been written better elsewhere. There is some redundancy of the appendices with other sources.

An essential book should you find yourself looking for Colonial Emigration Records for your German, Swiss, Dutch, and French ancestors.

Users not: Spelling was not standardized. Also, English shipping clerks guessed how the emigrant's names are spelled. It helps to think of how the name sounds and keep an open mind about how those sounds are represented to the English ear.
