In The Buddha: His Life Retold, Robert Allen Mitchell takes well-known stories from the Buddha's life and makes them accessible to the mind of the modern westerner. The warmth and meaning of the Buddha's message is abundantly on display here. Maybe the best non-academic book on the topic.

This is an amazing translation of the life of the Buddha. This is one I will read and reread. Beautiful, lyrical prose. I love the story of the author, Robert Allen Mitchell. This guy was a genius who taught himself Pali and Sankrit to enhance his lifelong study of Buddhism. He translated and edited this " everything you need to know" version of the Buddha's life. The manuscript was found, unpublishedm, in his attic after his death.
