This is a great history of the development of ideas on Liberty via the direct words of dozens of major figures involved in that development - some nearly forgotten and often ignored or disparaged.
It's been a long time since I read it - 15-20 years, but it has guided my library-building ever since. Which is to say, I now own at least one volume of the writings of each of those authors - plus writings about them and even commentaries for and against many of them.
