In the ancient disciple-rabbi relationship, the disciple would follow the rabbi so closely that he would be covered in the dust kicked up from his rabbi's feet. Thousands of years later, though we walk on roads of pavement and not dust, we are still called to be disciples—to follow our Rabbi, Jesus Christ, so closely that we are covered with his life, changed, and made new. Into His Likeness provides an approachable but in-depth exploration of how to live as a disciple and experience the transformation Jesus wants to work in our lives. We might desire to live more like Christ, but we know we fall short. This book simply helps us follow those initial promptings of the Holy Spirit, so that we may more intentionally encounter Jesus anew each day and be more disposed to his grace changing us ever more into his likeness.

What an excellent book! This is one of the best books I've read about growing in the spiritual life, from the desire to do so to the execution of how, going through various different categories. (This is a bad description. I am tired, this is my excuse. XD) I will be revisiting it for sure--there was so much that I needed to hear!
This book on the basics of intentional discipleship includes some anecdotes that I found to be really helpful in explaining certain dimensions of the spiritual life and themes that are always good to be reminded of. There are, however, so many books out there that are more effective and inspiring for those who wish to begin to take their faith lives more seriously, that I don’t think I would ever have any reason to recommend this book.
This book is rich. It's a simply written good review and reminder of what's most important in the Christian's life, and it offers practical steps on how to grow closer to our Lord as he desires.
Having met Dr. Sri and thinking him to be quite intellectual, I wondered if I would be able to read and understand his book, Into His Likeness: Be Transformed as a Disciple of Christ. I need not have been concerned because the book is written in very understandable language. It was down to earth [no pun intended regarding the dust kicked up from the sandels of the rabbi] and I learned a lot.
Not surprisingly, Dr Sri deals with the issue of discipleship - and how everyone can and should become one. Basically, what he wrote made sense, and I liked that. It was relatively short, readable and informative. The book was given to me by a friend who indicated that she thought I would like it, and I did.
Read with a small group for lent. I found the information to be very basic, all things I’ve heard before ad nauseam. It was very helpful for a lot of people in the group though!
When I first began Edward Sri's book Into His Likeness, I was afraid it was simply going to be a emotional appeal to be more devoted Christian. However, after the initial emotional appeal Sri does a wonderful job weaving together practical examples of entering in the spiritual life in this straightforward and accessible way. Sri structures the book into three sections: "Be my Disciple", The Encounter, and Transformed by Fire. In the first section he lays out what it means to be a disciple through the example of first century rabbis and their disciples. In the second section he outlines the struggle in the life of a Christian toward holiness of which ultimately we are lifted only by God's grace. In the third section Sri provides four concrete examples of the spiritual life as outlined in Acts 2:42. Each individual chapter ends with reflection questions, which could work great for either personal devotional reading or a small group study. This is the second Edward Sri book that I've read, and I appreciate his approachable and relatable writing style. This is a quick yet powerful read, I'd recommend it to anyone curious of the spiritual life.
Edward Sri provides insight in this easy read, with much to think about. He opens with a challenge to not just be a fan of Jesus, but to be a follower, a disciple. The book is full of stories and challenge thoughts to help see what this looks like in practice and it frames up the decision for each of us.
This book was good in the way that it gave concrete, tangible ideas for living your life in a more Christ-like way. But I wanted more. It felt very "on the surface" and I was constantly wanting the author to go deeper.
This is a very simple read, but with good reminders on being a disciple of Christ. I especially appreciated the last section about devoting ourselves to the teaching of the Apostles (forming our minds), fellowship, the breaking of bread (sacraments), and prayer.
I read this book as a morning devotional, reading one chapter a day and reflecting on the questions at the end of the chapters. I really appreciated there being questions at the end of the chapter because I often had to read while my little kids were around and it helped me refocus on what I needed to get out of the reading, despite the distractions.
If you are looking for an in-depth "how to", this really isn't the book. However, I don't think that is probably what most people need...getting closer to Christ is about creating that relationship and that will release the love to others - the relationship is the first step - and this book gives you ideas on how to do that. Each person's relationship will be a little different, much like our relationships with people. Therefore, I felt the book did just what it set out to do, despite some of the reviews I've read. It is a feel good book that leaves the reader with the feeling that "I can do this!"
I did feel that the chapterh on technology and podcasts didn't really applied to me and felt like the comments were an over-generalization of thier use. As a mother of a very large family who always has needs that I must meet, I feel technology only brings me closer to others, Christ, and brings me more time for reflection as I can listen during and between tasks and then reflect. I think it is all about how you use the technology but I can see how it may be a problem for some people.
This was a very readable book, not overly wordy. My favorite quote was "Real love is not about feelings. And it's not about what we get out of the other person. It's about a commitment to the one we love."
I read this book in a book club with a wonderful group of people. Not only did this book boost wonderful, fruitful discussion but I feel that my faith grew.
Dr. Sri taught on technology use with exceptional wisdom- I think my technology use is better because of the argument he sent forward in the book. Also, my appreciation for the Lord of the Rings in the chapter where Dr. Sri spoke on how we need to, "life our minds to the higher things" has been and will continue to be something that I will remember and refer to in life.
I think this book is worth reading for every Catholic in 2020 era. Dr. Sri's respect for the Catechism, the Bible, and the Church Fathers is simply astounding. I love to listen to podcasts, but Dr. Sri said something I will never forget- that podcasts are not better than a book- there is something about a book. This is so true. However, Dr. Sri also mentioned how some podcasts are wonderful and they are a great supplement to the Catechism and the Bible- I really appreciated this outlook and for Dr. Sri to speak on these matters in a culture where we just have so much information from so many different platforms and communication outlets.
I think Dr. Sri has a great deal of wisdom about today and he has a wonderful way of taking the inspired texts of scripture and helping us to understand today better.
A short, useful book for those looking to take their relationship with Christ to the next level. If you have ever read similar books or been a member of various Christian groups, you may not encounter any new deep and moving epiphanies. That said, Sri does a nice job of challenging the reader to do some self-reflection, to consider what it means to be a disciple of Christ (not just a Christian spectator), and offers some constructive ideas of how to push oneself to a more committed level. Sri offers some insights, though they are not particularly original. Given how short the book is and what an easy read it is, however, perhaps one does not expect more. It is more useful as a way marker, a bit of discipline along the path, a nutritious part of a spiritual diet. Worth the time needed, but not a must-read.
“Holiness does not consist in never having erred or sinned. Holiness increases the capacity for conversion, for repentance, for willingness to start again and, especially, for reconciliation and forgiveness… it is not the fact that we have never erred but our capacity for reconciliation and forgiveness which makes us saints. And we can all learn this way of holiness.” - Pope Benedict XVI
I read this book as a daily devotional, reading a chapter and doing the reflection questions afterwards. I really enjoyed reading the inspiring quotes from saints and all of the positive encouragement that we are all truly capable of becoming devoted disciples.
“Remember, discipleship is about imitating the Master, not just getting the right answers on a theology quiz. The heart of the matter is not only believing the right things, but also living as Jesus lived.” - Dr. Edward Sri
Very thorough and practical approach to cultivating a spiritual life. Would be especially perfect for someone who has made a decision to place Jesus at the center of their life and now begins to live out that commitment.
I really like how he framed the idea of meditative prayer being the way to live out relationship with Jesus. He addresses the excuses we all have why we don’t pray (beyond vocal rote prayers & various devotions), with the biggest obstacle being time & busyness. “No one, for example, has died of hunger because they were too busy to take time to eat.”
This is the first giveaway I ever won, and it was a Catholic book from all things! Holds a dear place in my shelf and heart. Becuase I began reading it and stopped for a while, a lot has been lost in my mind. But it was one of those books that is very easy to read. The writing is simple and engaging. It resonates deeply. It's a book to reread as I continue to grow in my faith. Like a manual of sorts. Guidance to the Lord. Edward Sri is a studious Catholic author, and I'll definitely keep my eye to reread his books and read other ones!
This book is a wonderful book for anyone trying to figure out how to live their faith amidst the competing and contradictory demands of the secular world which increasingly rejects faith. It is an easy read with short chapters, thought-provoking questions at the end of each chapter, and easy to follow guidance which coincides with the guidance of the Catholic church including the Bible. The four pillars of faith being prayer, sacraments, fellowship, and the teaching of the apostles. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
I enjoyed this book with the insights and questions at the end of each chapter to ponder, reflect, and to change through.
Saint Peter, one of the original 12 apostles, who fell short prior to the resurrection on many occasions, was transformed with the resurrection. Peter is all about the process of discipleship. By his example, we can learn from him that God takes the raw stuff of our lives which are imperfect and filled with sin and transforms us into saints; encounter by encounter. I look forward to being transformed.
This book was an easy to approach lesson and reflection of ways to bring Christ into daily life. Although under 150 pages, it provided much insight into obstacles that prevent us from living as a disciple. The sections regarding new media and the 4 practices of the early followers of Jesus were especially eye opening. It was a much more fruitful read than anything containing the phrase “the-very-best-version-of-yourself.”
This was a book made available to everyone in our parish. A more contemporary approach to thinking about faith and mankind's relationship with God, its modern examples seemed to focus on what new hurdles society has to overcome in developing and maintaining a relationship with God. It had some good reminders, and even though it was a short book, I had to make myself pick it up and read it. It wasn't a book that engaged me unfortunately.
This book was excellent!! The author does an amazing job of helping, you unpack what it means, both to follow Jesus and to be transformed into his image. It is packed with messages of the gospel and lots of grace. He has great questions at the end of each chapter to help you contemplate and process with the Lord. The last few chapters of the book are very Catholic, yet still have practical application for those of the evangelical bit like me.
Into His Likeness- I will definitely be reading more of Mr. Sri’s books. This book applies to real life and provides easy steps to come closer to Jesus. Sri applies theology in a practical and approachable manner. Although the author is Catholic his teaching applies to all Christians or anyone seeking a closer relationship with God.
I've read several books by Edward Sri he makes his books personal. He likes to teach. He uses examples that most people understand and he always talks about how much God loves us. Agape love totally unconditional love. I wish I could explain things as well as he does. Thanks for a great book.
It has more substance than Matthew Kelly's books do, but it is still an easy read. It would probably be a good introduction for someone just becoming interested in how to live as a Christian. I've read a few books like this in my life and I still found it to be helpful in reminding me of basic (but important) principles.
I have listened to Edward Sri's podcasts for a few years, but had never read any of his books. This book is beautifully written about Discipleship. He gives great advice on our role as a Christian as well as giving us meditations at the end of the chapter. His analogies are visual and clear. This is an easy book to read, but shouldn't be rushed. I look forward to reading more of his books.
Dr. Sri has a gift for delivering practical and beautiful information to move your faith out of stagnation and into action! Of course, transformation takes effort and cooperation with the Spirit, and this short study (there are questions at the end of each chapter) will help you take the steps towards a full life in the Spirit.
