Rebel's Treasure

Rate this book
Now that her domineering mother is dead, there's nothing to keep Tess Montgomery from taking possession of an unexpected inheritance a small ranch and an abandoned mine just outside Tucson, Arizona. Then Tess discovers her co-beneficiary is Zachary McClain, a Confederate soldier she protected from imprisonment ten years earlier. But their reunion is far from warm as Zach no longer resembles the gentle Virginian Tess once knew. For some reason she cannot fathom, this man detests the very sight of her. More troublesome, the very sight of Zach fills Tess with passionate longing.

For almost ten years, Zach McClain has nursed his hatred of Tess Montgomery until it resembles a festering wound. Now, in order to sell the property left to them, Zach must declare an armed truce with the woman he believes betrayed him to Union forces. The effort is driving him mad, especially as his loathing competes with an even stronger desire for the slim, chestnut-haired beauty. The truth of what really happened all those years ago could set their love free if Tess' reckless sacrifice doesn't destroy their last chance at happiness.

DNF at 50%. This book had a few things going against it.

Number 1: a huge misunderstanding that lasts until basically the last chapter. (I skipped to the end after awhile and found where it FINALLY got cleared up). There were so many times during the first half of the book (that I read) where the misunderstanding would alllllmost get cleared up, but then the hero would back away and drop the subject. I hate that!

Number 2: because of the huge misunderstanding, the hero was left thinking that he needed to hate on the heroine. The result was that he acted with top level of asshole'ery thru most of the book. Normally it's a cold, ice princess heroine that ruins a books for me, but this guy was a real loser. I was actually getting kinda pissed while reading the book at what an asshole he was to the heroine.

Number 3: it takes place in the hot desert of southern Arizona. I am from close to this area of AZ and I hate everything about this desert, from the extreme heat, scorpions, dust, lack of grass... everything that was described in this story. So that was just my personal opinion, but it was not a relaxing feeling reading about it.

A nice Wild West romance. He is a rugged (tormented) hero and she a feisty heroin.
She loves him, he hates her .......less and less.
I liked it very much.

This book wasn't bad. In fact, it had all the requirements for your typical old west romance; treasure, villains, conspiracy and even a dose of misguided anger. Set in the Arizona territory after the civil war, we even have a Southern, war ravaged hero to teach to love his most hated enemy - himself.
