How Is a Crayon Made? by Grace Hansen is an informational text that shows students the real process of creating crayons in the crayola factory. The wax for crayons gets delivered to crayon factories and is melted. The warm wax gets moved to large silos that pumps the wax through pipes. Chemicals are added to the wax to make it less sticky overall. Then color is added to the mix. The wax is put into molds and cools. The I was really excited when I found this informational text because it pairs really well with the Crayon Man book that I found. I would incorporate a lesson in which students would listen to readalouds of both How Is A Crayon Made? and The Crayon Man book. I would let students afterwards engage in deconstructing a crayon. This would require the students to break the crayon into smaller parts to think critically about how it is made. I think this book is a great books for students there are some high frequency words that would need to be previewed with students but overall a great read.
Near the railroad cars, it looks like a bunch of stuff is dangerous and flammable. The steam in the railroad cars melts the wax.
There are eight silos for storing wax.
I like the really colorful red powder. It’s so shiny!
A bunch of crayons come sticking out of the holes. After that, they are labeled. Then they are put into boxes, dropped into funnels, and then put in boxes.
