Excerpt from Bird Guide
It is an undisputed fact that a great many of our birds are becoming more scarce each year, while a few are, even now, on the ver of extinction. The decrease in numbers of a few species may be attributed chie y to the elements. Suoh as a long continued period of cold weather or ice stoma in the winter, and rainy weather dur ing the nesting season' however, in one way or another, and often unwittingly, man is chleny responsible or the diminution in numbers. If I were to name the forces that work 'nst the increase of bird life, in order of their importance, I should give them as an; the elements; accidents; cats; other animals; birds of prey; and snakes. I do not take into consideration the death of bitds from natural causes, such as old age and disease, for these should be counterbalanced by the natural increase.

More of a historical artifact now, i.e., not particularly useful as an actual field guide. The original predates even Peterson. Illustrations are crude by modern standards although they are in color.

The illustrations are gorgeous and the scientific descriptions are in the same language that is used now.
When this book was first published, starlings and barn swallows were still only located near to the East coast and in the almost 100 years since are now to be found in the Great Lakes region.
