This obviously isn't a book aimed at me. My kids are so-so about it. Me? The princess is a brat, her father's a tyrant, the prince is an a$$. The frog-prince isn't much better. There's nothing new or exciting here, and it's not a particularly fun read.

The message? You have to marry someone, so you might as well pick the best of a bad bunch.

Er, no.

This was a retelling of a Grimm original and I have to admit that I'm not a fan. Poppy was a brat. Yeah, I'd be pissed if my dad said I had to marry some shmuck, but the frog did her a favor and she made the deal and wouldn't honor it and then felt bad when she chucked him out the window. She kissed him and he turned back into a prince and out of 'gratitude' he asks how can he thank her. She says to marry her and he does. Did he forget she threw him out the window first? I'd call it even and get away from her drama as fast as I could.

That said, the illustrations were cute and I get it's diluted version of the original and toned down to be appropriate for kids, but I hate the thought of forcing marriage on a child even though she wouldn't wed until she was older.

The artwork is cute but I think I just don’t like the basic story or “The Frog Prince”. This is a retelling of the classic Grimm story. I feel the best thing about this story is the opportunity it gives to discuss boundaries. I don’t like how the princess doesn’t feel comfortable with the frog stalking her but her father shames her for wanting to break a promise. I don’t think that’s a good message to give kids. If you feel uncomfortable, you don’t owe anyone anything, least of all letting a frog sleep in your bed. It is nice that the frog and Princess make “friends” in the end.

It is a funny story but my three year old was not interested at all! Part of Usborne Advent calendar.

It is a re-told story originally from The Brothers Grimm. This series published by Usborne has much more text though still contains pictures compared to picture books. I would not consider this book as chapter book although it has 4 "chapters". But I think it is a perfect bridge to chapter books such as "Magic Tree House" series.

Michelle read this book with great confidence. Here is a list of some new words:

slimy: 'i' sounds "I", used to describe the wet and sticky frog, quite yuck!

furious fury: adjective and its noun, means very angry and cross
wobble (wobbly) wibble: shake, move in an unbalanced situation

bulging: 'g' sounds like in 'gentle', an adj. from 'bulge', means protruding

plunged: verb from 'plunge', to fall into somewhere

bellow: accent at 'e', means to shout in a deep voice.

slurp: to eat or drink noisily, such as soup (in this book is when the frog was having the watercress soup)

strode: past tense of 'stride', means to walk with long steps

splat: a smacking or splashing noise

sprawl: to sit or lie with the body and limbs spread out awkwardly

It's an exciting and funny story. Also I liked this book because it has surprises and I liked the artwork too. It had really strange pictures. This shows children the reality of fairy tales, it shows them that not everything is going to end happily ever after and that is okay too. Also the story shows when somebody love someone he will do anything to make him happy, like the frog prince he wants to go back to be frog again so the princess will love him. Also this story has many emotions like frustration, Courage, Teamwork, Friendship, Respect, Family, Judgment, Fairness, and Trustworthiness.

Teacher can use this story in the class by talking about frustration and disappointed from someone and what does it means to give a chance for people that we love and care if they hurt us. Also this story is a chance for teacher to talk about what you should do when you are upset about somebody, like talk to that person and explain to him how you feel. Also Teacher can gather children around and let them act like a frog.

This story is about a very stuck up princess who learns about being kind and considerate to others. It also does a great job on demonstrating on how if you say you are going to do something that you need to keep your word and fulfill your promise. There are numerous examples of this throughout the book. The illustrations in this book are very bright, and very well detailed. The illustrator does a great job paying close attention to details on every page. Overall I really enjoyed reading this book.
