This is pretty much what it says on the tin, an overview of how the Romans established colonies from during the period of the Republic. There are plenty of photographs and plans to illustrate the layout of a Roman colony and how they appear from the air today, in many cases the Roman legacy being evident. It is a shortish work and a little dry, what the book does illustrate is how the Romans went about extending their influence, first in the area immediately around Rome itself then ultimately across Italy and overseas through colonies and how in some cases it was a case of scraping together a couple of thousand of settlers to establish a colony at a strategic point to deny another power use of it.
Overall this is moderately interesting.
