Healing Well and Living Free from an Abusive Relationship

Rate this book
One out of every four women in the United States will experience some form of domestic violence or abuse in her lifetime. Through Dr. Ramona Probasco's own powerful personal story of coming out of an abusive relationship, along with her twenty years of experience as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, she takes readers through a proven, step-by-step process for moving from victim to survivor to overcomer. With genuine empathy, she encourages the reader to call it what it is, understand the mindset of the abuser, break the cycle of violence, recognize what forgiveness is and is not, find a healthy support system, and more. Each chapter ends with a simple, heartfelt prayer, Scriptural promises readers can apply to their situation, and questions for further reflection. Readers are encouraged to go through the book individually, with a counselor, or as part of a support group.

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of race, education, socioeconomic status, or culture. But it does not have to be the end of the story. Healing well and living free are within reach.

Dr. Probasco begins her story with a personal tale. Hence, she has your attention, right there at the start. "Hello?"

She speaks with conviction, mercy and honesty. There is some Bible Scripture.

However, Dr. Probasco asserts that she is not interested in converting anyone. She simply does her thing from her own sum of experiences. Period.

She implores you to consider your current situation with such integrity. It is for your own good. Really!

Dr. Probasco encourages forgiveness. For your sake and only your sake. That is all. She implores the gentle reader in many manners towards the end of certain chapters. These are good to pay attention to.

This is a must read for anyone who is experiencing abuse of any kid from a spouse, partner, dating partner, or supposed friend. It is also a good read for the friends and family of those enduring such abuse. The book is laid out logically and the concepts are spelled out so clearly and plainly that it will be clear to the reader whether or not they’re experiencing partner abuse. This type of relationship abuse is much more covert than most people realize, so I highly recommend this book to any and every reader.

Tender and practical

This book is personal and reaches down and grips the heart. It was beautiful how the author vulnerabely wove her story throughout,  making it easy to read. Her practical advice makes it useable and hope-giving. I loved how the spiritual was brought in in such tender ways, bringing the possibility of healing and actually thriving into the realm of possibility. The appendices in and of themselves are worth the price of the book.

Learn to love yourself

I had experienced very little physical abuse, so at first i didn't think this would apply to me. Mental/ emotional abuse is just as damaging. I had no hope and no light at the end of the tunnel.. I prayed to God to let me die.. This book was difficult at times but i needed to hear what was being said. The part where i put God's name into 1Cor. 13 was difficult but wonderful. Then to put my name in there was eye opening.

Everyone should read this book in this day of all kinds of abuses. Many people seem to be so angry and, in their wake, other people pay. This applies especially in marriages. Nothing is so terrifying as feeling helpless and trapped while being abused. A great THANK YOU to Dr. Ramona for sharing her story and how to change oneself to move into healing and freedom!

Dr. Ramona writes from a first hand experience of how abuse sneaks in and destroys before you even realize what is happening. There is hope and healing though. She talks about her journey to healing and how you can also find healing. Her writing is heart felt. This is a must read for anyone going through abuse or if you know someone in an abusive situation.

The author was the victim of relationship abuse but is now a qualified counsellor specialising in this subject.
The book is very honest, the author shares her own story and those of some of her clients. She is careful to break open the secrecy of abuse, defining it and breaking the lies that the abuser will change, it is just a blip in the relationship.
She exposes the classic characteristics not only of the abuser but also the victim.
This is a great book to read if you are involved in abuse in any way. The taching is clear and there are questions at the end of each chapter to guide you through your own healing.
The author is a christian and although christianity is suggested as a great method of support and aid to healing, it is not seen as obligatory and it is not 'pushed doen the readers throat'.
As a past victim of abuse, i was very touched by the book, and would highly recommend it.
