Hamish, the lighthouse keeper's cat, has been neglecting his duties and the mice are running wild all over the lighthouse. With the lighthouse inspector due any day now, Mr and Mrs Grinling decide to put Hamish on a diet until he catches the mice...So Hamish sets off to find someone who will appreciate him better. Soon, though, Hamish realizes there's no place like home.

Hamish doesn't want to catch mice or skip breakfast so he tries to find another home but discovered there's no better home than the lighthouse with the Grinlings.
One of the most outstanding aspects of this picture book is its incredible illustrations, rich in both color and detail. The story itself is engaging—Hamish may be lazy and occasionally narcissistic, but he also has a kind side, as we see from what happens with the mice in the end.
I did not like that the light keepers cat went away even though they were not going to starve them. I really liked the cats adventure around every place.
I'm always partial to a cat book, and this picture book is no exception, considering some real horror stories with lighthouses and even cats, but this one is a nice story with some lovely simple artwork. For beginner readers the language is a little harder, so help will be needed.
