Sustainable Medicine: Whistle-Blowing on 21st-Century Medical Practice

Rate this book
Sustainable Medicine is based on the premise that twenty-first century Western medicine--driven by vested interests--is failing to address the root causes of disease. Symptom-suppressing medication and "polypharmacy" have resulted in an escalation of disease and a system of so-called "health care," which more closely resembles "disease care."

In this essential book, Dr. Sarah Myhill aims to empower people to heal themselves by addressing the underlying causes of their illness. She presents a logical progression from identifying symptoms, to understanding the underlying mechanisms, to relevant interventions and tests and tools with which to tackle the root causes. As Myhill writes, "It's all about asking the question 'why?'"

Sustainable Medicine covers a wide range of symptoms including inflammation (infection, allergy, autoimmunity), fatigue, pain, toxic symptoms, deficiency symptoms, and hormonal symptoms. And Dr. Myhill includes a toolbox of treatments for specific illnesses and ailments, as well as a general approach to avoiding and treating all disease. Finally, she offers a series of case histories to show how people have successfully taken control of their health and healed even in the face of the most discouraging symptoms--all without the harmful interventions of 21st century Western medicine.

Sustainable Medicine by Dr. Sarah Myhill is a fascinating read. This is not a niche book. This book is written for everyone. After all, who doesn’t know someone who suffers health problems? Maybe it is you or a dear family member or a good friend. Most people know of someone who suffers from chronic health ailments. Dr. Myhill shares her vast knowledge from over three decades of experience in the medical field and it is not the advice you will get in a typical 10 minute doctor visit either. It is thoughtful, comprehensive and most of all; she truly endeavors to uphold the Hippocratic Oath to do no harm.

Dr. Myhill has noticed several clear trends in 21st century conventional medicine and ascertains that modern day healthcare frequently does not address root problems, but instead focuses on pharmaceuticals to mask symptoms of disease and ailment. Dr. Myhill ascertains that this approach is restrictive. It often does not provide the patient with enough facts and background knowledge to make informed decisions toward their personal paths to recovery. Doctors also fail to tailor approaches to individuals, resulting in a lower level of care. Additionally, the root cause is never addressed, so the disease or ailment progresses or simply takes a new course. Doctors who fail to conform to this approach to healthcare, however, are routinely harassed, making it difficult for the patient to get fresh medical perspectives and full-spectrum advice about their health and healthcare options.

I enjoyed the book because it found it informative and empowering. This book was written for everybody. If you are in good health, it offers a blueprint for remaining healthy and provides knowledgeable medical advice to empower those who suffer chronic ailments. I highly recommend it! Although I received a copy of this book from Net Galley, this did not affect my rating. I have provided an unbiased and honest review.

This book starts off with a pointed focus on the dangers of doctors practicing conventional medicine and goes on to carefully outline the areas doctors should instead focus on, and (more importantly) the ways patients can take their health back. I liked the analogy of the body as an engine to describe the mechanisms of energy delivery and energy expenditure. I also appreciated the author's focus on and experience with creating a thorough health history with each patient.

Readers will find the recommendations for specific tests for specific conditions helpful. I was also thankful to see sections addressing EBV, hypervigilance, vaccines, essential micronutrients, and the importance of sleep. Chapter 4 will be especially helpful for practitioners who'd like to learn more about a functional approach and the appropriate tools for addressing specific conditions.

I found the quotes a little distracting and felt the content was great without them.

I received an e-copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Dr Myhill presents strategies to simplify patient diagnostics in internal medicine by comparing the human body to an automobile. As a system it sounds promising in driving down to the underlying conditions instead of treating symptoms alone. I enjoyed Myhill's writing and while I disagreed with some approaches (e.g. grapeseed extract as an antimicrobial) due to lack of scientific evidence it didn't sour my experience with the book.

Thanks to Net Galley and Chelsea Green Publishing for an advance review copy.

I received this book, for free, in exchange for an honest review.

Dr. Myhill seems to know her stuff. On the other hand, there didn't appear to be much new information in this book for someone who's read a bunch of Paleo/health books. That being said, there are sections centering on different treatment modalities and diagnoses that could be useful to people with particular issues.

A nice reference book from a British NHS medical doctor who realizes the Western medical system is thoroughly broken. Here is an excerpt that gives you a flavor:

"Medical education is a brain washing process which stupefies and petrifies the ability of the individual doctor to think independently."

Though the book contains good information, there is a lot of redundancy. The same points are stated over and over again, many times using the exact wording with no added detail or clarification. I used the book more for the references to other resources than for direct information.

Essential reading for patients

I have leant so much from this book and highly recommend it to all who want to live long, healthy lives. Full of tightly argued common sense that is consistent in all areas.
