Life taught Emelise that you cannot trust a man to be there when you need him. After losing her mother, Emelise moves to New Orleans with high hopes. Just when she thinks are going smoothly, fate steps in and her world is turned upside down.
Caine Bordeaux
Caine became Alpha of the Black Water Pard at the age of twenty two. After a failed relationship with a human, he'd resigned himself to the life of a bachelor. Little did he know his world was going to be rocked by a woman who proved that dynamite comes in small packages.
****** Author's Note: While each book in the series is a stand alone, the first two books run congruent and are closely intertwined, especially the first few chapters of book two.
Also, in most shifter books, the mates are the same species. In my world, this is not the case. You will find pairings in this series you might not find elsewhere.
Angel Nyx is an author of paranormal, and contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and post-apocalyptic romance with some why choose thrown into the mix. Her passion for literature was instilled in her at a young age when her mother read her fairy tale stories at bedtime. Her vivid imagination helps her get in tune with her characters to bring them to life for her readers. She is also a mom, a reader, and an avid gamer chick. When she's writing, reading, or gaming, she is usually relaxing to music, spending time with family, or finding new authors to fall in love with. She has a long time love affair with the city of New Orleans and plans to make it a regular vacation destination in coming years.
It felt like the first half of the book was everything that already happened in book 1, but from Eme and Caine’s perspectives. The problem with that is, we already got their POV in book 1. While of course there is much more detail here, it left me bored and uninterested,
I hated Eme. It was completely unrealistic for a woman in her mid 20’s to believe that EVERY man is destined to leave, just because some guy broke up with your Mom when you were 10. Because this character has never seen a couple stay together right? Not friends, parents of friends, grandparents, on TV, in a book. Nope, all men leave eventually. Poor Caine was trying to walk on eggshells trying to find a balance where he could have his mate with him, and not scare her off at the same time.
We again play musical chairs with the POV, and it was unnecessary the majority of the time. There was more than once when a scene happened from one POV, and then it would change POVs and go over the same exact scene again. I actually started picturing me marking giant X’s with a red pen over all of the pointless paragraphs of duplicate scenes from multiple point of views.
We get more than one strange surprise in Scarlet Roses that just seem out of place and a bit forced. Like they were added just to try and give the story some flair, but instead left it even more muddy.
Caine is Cajun, and while I normally would have no problem with that, it hurt my brain trying to read his dialect. There are ways to write characters with accents, and still give a readable story. I found myself having to reread certain sentences just so I could translate what was trying to be said.
Speaking of dialect. More than a few times I found myself thinking “nobody would ever say that” and “nobody talks like that”.
Overall I’m giving Scarlet Roses 2 stars. The story had potential, it just wasn’t fulfilled.
We met Eme (h) and Caine (H) in book 1. She's the best friend of the h there, newly arrived in New Orleans to start over after the death of her mother by opening her own jazz and blues club. He's the Alpha of the local leopard shifter Pard. While they recognize they are mates, she is reluctant to open herself up to a relationship, feeling that men can't be depended on. Will he ever be able to break through her walls?
There really wasn't much plot here. Almost the whole first half was kinda a recap of book 1, but from Eme and Caine's POVs. Except we got glimpses of that actually in book 1 (and conversely, things were mentioned here with no other reference but had actually happened in book 1, so they seemed very out of context). And the second half was about opening the club and family relationships. But all without much drama, no major hurdles... Plot wise, it felt like it should have been a side story novella in terms of actual content (just something to accompany book 1), but padded out to over 200 pages to count as a full novel. And I do mean padded - the whole story arc with Hailey? Nothing but filler.
While not a whiny, angsty cheater like her bestie Lily, Eme was still a hard h for me to like. She was completely anti-man, anti-relationship based on her mother's history. No reasons from personal history of her own? Not even personal observation! Just because her Mom had a breakup when Eme was 10 and then never dated again? Yes, some relationships fall apart, but did Eme seriously have no other examples in her life of a stable couple - even though she's 25?? It seemed overblown and unrealistic. And got super suuuuuper annoying! She's so against any possibility of any future with Caine that she's completely ignoring every gesture he makes. I mean, he's built a separate greenhouse for her in order to have her roses, but 'he's done nothing indicating he wants a commitment.' Just over and over and over.
And I had a struggle with her relation with her mother. Yes, her mother had passed recently and Eme was melancholy and missed her. Totally believable. But during the few short months that she was in New Orleans, Eme found that she had grandparents, cousins, more cousins - who had reached out to her mother and been turned away! And she had a father, with half-siblings and a stepmother - again, family that Eme could have known, had her mother not been stubborn, immature, and selfish. (C'mon - she'd totally ghosted Derrick when she got pregnant, didn't track him down for another 5ish years, then is amazed and bitter and hurt that he'd moved on?! She's the one who'd run away!!) And while Adelaide was perfectly entitled to her own opinions (and even was justified in some ways), what I found unbelievable was Eme's reaction to those secrets - no anger or bitterness at her mother for keeping all this (none!!), no sorrow for missed opportunities, just happy acceptance! And from someone who had ridiculous walls about other relationships!!
And for the 'deeply scarring' relationship with Sean whats-his-face from when Eme was a child? Quite frankly, as we learned more about her mom and how she related to others, I seriously had the feeling that there was a lot more to the story of her break up with Sean. Adelaide seemed high maintenance and stubborn and selfish, and Sean and she were together for over 6 years, with a small child in the mix. That seriously doesn't sound like a guy who had a 'get what he wants and leaves' mentality.
And more on the subject of strange plot points... the whole Izzy meet thing. I know we had to met Izzy in person and get her to the compound somehow, if she was going to meet a mate (possibly for a future book?) but Eme just hunting her down and showing up on her doorstep after Izzy posted the club review? Weird and stalkerish and creepy.
For readability, it's just so-so. The Cajun accents are still kinda slow to read (reading out loud sometimes helps), but the bigger frustrations was the constantly shifting POVs. Seriously, in some chapters, we'd switch POV for maybe a page or two, and then right back - getting the exact same scene from both sides, back and forth. Got repetitive. Again, that sense of unnecessary filler.
Still lots of typos and punctuation issues. Especially for an author who says that she also proofreads for others, there are a lot of errors. Stray periods, extra quotation marks or apostrophes, unpaired quotations marks, lots of one letter typos (got/go, etc) and so on. Better on the punctuation issues than in book 1, and mostly more distracting than difficult to read, but still annoying. And the incorrect comma usage was hard to read. Introductory clauses need commas! Comma splices are real! Pet peeves, I know, but these do make it confusing to read.
Alternating (frequently!!) 3rd person POV - mostly Eme and Caine, but like book 1, there were tons of other POVs too. No cheating, no love triangles, no OW/OM drama - at least that improved from book 1. Very frustrating h wrapped up in a story with a boatload of padding. Seriously, this could have been trimmed down to a fun novella, but should not have padded out as long as it was. HEA and no cliffhangers, but 2 other couples were introduced (possible future stories?) and still plenty of other characters to match up. No epilogue, but last chapter includes all the usual wedding and pregnancy and family warm fuzzies.
Would I read more in the series? Maybe if they're more free Kindle free finds, but probably not. While the character outlines and the story summaries show promise, I'm not crazy about the writing style or how these stories get developed. Too many other SPN romances I want to read first.
I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. Can I just say that Angel Nyx nailed this one too. She is an amazing writer. I AM LOVING THE NOLA Shifters Series. The characters are amazing, detailed and rich with character. Emelise is a young lady who has had a life full of disappointment. First it is just her and her mom, her mom had to leave her home of NOLA when she found out she was pregnant to a human, wait, I forgot to say they are Leopard Shifters, and to be with a human is a major no no in her Alpha's eyes. If her mom, Adelaide, stayed at home, her pard's Alpha Zachary Eitenne, would have made her abort the baby or kill her when she was born. So she took the chance an ran. Adelaide did the best she cold for her and Eme. They lived in Phoenix and worked hard for what they had. Her mom is killed in a car crash so she decides to help to New Orleans to open a blue club. She has a friend that lives there, Lily a wolf shifter, whom she met when Lily was escaping her own pack. Since she is living in New Orleans in the Black Water Pard, she is required to meet with their Alpha to be able to stay in their territory. Once she meets Caine, the new Alpha, things go crazy for her. She has an instant attraction to him, not sure if it is her or her leopard. Caine is an investor who has helped fix up his community of Shifters. He has worked hard on helping them fix up their Pard. He is blown away when he first meets Eme, he never thought he would find his mate. Feeling out of control, Eme tries to keep her distance from Caine, since every man she has ever know has left her, she is afraid to even hope. Things get heated between the two of them, Caine wants to protect Eme and Eme wants to keep her independence. Along the way they meet new people with the opening of the Scarlet Flux, her club. Malcom, a Lion shifter, comes to live in NOLA and offers to sing at the club. On an off chance, she even meets her father and they develop a relationship. There are new things thrown at them all the time, past flames, new friends, their heated feelings, the club and stupid people who want to make trouble. I definitely recommend reading this book and this series. It is great. Sorry if I cut off with my explanation but you just need to read it for yourself.
Caine is the ideal shifter Alpha - a compassionate, fair-minded leader with a deep and abiding love for those he takes care of. After seeing him as almost a secondary character in the previous book, it was pure joy to really get to know him in this one. Eme is his perfect match, and most of the story is her story, from her mother's history with the Pard to her own cast of friends and newly-acquainted extended family.
Their romance is beautifully told, with enough care given to the conflicts and concerns to feel authentic, but not so much that you feel they're being kept apart just to drag the book out. Nope, there's plenty more drama outside of their love story to give this book its amazing depth and breadth. I loved getting little teaser glimpses into other newly-forming couples, each of whom I hope the author will build another series book around. Watching how the shifter community works together reminds me of the way small close-knit communities used to be. This is an excellent book, not just as a standalone romance but as a continuation of our visit to the shifters of NOLA. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
You really need to read Wild Lilies before this book. They happen at the same time wo in one book you have one side of the story in this book you have the other side. This was a long story. No short read read. When you think the author is winding down, she starts right back up again. You get a range of emotions from each character, and you can hear that accent as you are reading those lines. I loved the descriptions of the club and the bayou. I will say this female had so much to deal with in her life. Being raised by a single mom and the history behind the reason why has put her faith in people very low. Yet, she reaches out to those in need and has such a heart for those in need. This series grabs you and won’t let go. The men love hard and the women always fight it but that mate pull always wins out !
Scarlet Roses is the second book from Angel Nyx's NOLA shifter series.
I adored this book. We first meet Emelise and Caine in book 1. This book follows their journey. You really get taken on an a emotional journey. Eme is a strong independent woman. I loved watching the transformation of her walls coming down and letting people in. So much is thrown at her all at once and Caine is there every step of the way supporting her. I just loved every part. The heartbreaking parts, the sad bits, the happy parts and of course we can't forget the of the charts sexiness 😉 I Absolutely loved it. I can not wait for the future books.
Well done Angel. You rocked it girl.
I voluntarily chose to review an advanced copy of this book.
This is the second book in the Nola Shifters series and it overlaps with the first book and has many of the same characters. This is Caine and Emelise's book and it a maze of feeling and emotions that keep you turning until the last page. The storylineis oh so romantic and fraught with steamy scenes, a big teddy bear who never expected to marry or have children as relationships never lasted. Eme believed that men never stayed around so she had no use for them. These two could not have been better matched. These books can be read as standalones but you will enjoy the story if read in order. The story flows through the pages and even though there are bumps along the way these characters will persevere and find their happy ending. I really enjoyed and cannot wait for book 3.
A Heartwarming story of Caine and Eme’s journey to find love. Eme’s inability to trust men to stay around, makes her leery of the mate bond she feels towards Caine. Caine is determined to prove that he is the mate she needs and wants. This story, while not having the suspense of the first book, keeps you wanting to read it to the end. I certainly didn’t want to put it down. I loved this story and the twists towards the end. I can’t wait to read the next in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I really enjoyed reading about Eme and Caine’s love story. Eme is a leopard shifter whose mate, Caine, is the Alpha of the New Orleans pack of leopard shifters. This book picks up as another characters view to Wild Lillies (Book One).
Eme has trouble trusting men and Caine determined to prove to her that not only can she trust him but that it’s not just his leopard half that is in love with her, that there’s more to their love story. Eme is in New Orleans opening a nightclub after her mom died and finds more than she expected when she starts meeting other shifters and people from her mom’s past.
I felt like this book was faster paced than Book One.
A fun heartwarming story, full of mistakes, betrayal, bitterness, which Al, turns into hope, forgiveness, love, trust, and happiness! Lots of misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and sacrifices. In the end loving, kindness, generosity wins. Weather from a mom’s death, to unexpected surprises, sadness is replaced with hope and love! Unique characters, funny and sassy, true friends, and a heartbroken child all come together to create a beautiful family.
What is sexier that a hot shifter with a Cajun dialect, absolutely nothing. Caine meets his match when it turns out the outspoken, independent and stubborn Emalise is his fated mate. She fights the connection for as long as she can but the connection wins out. They go through an unexpected glitch when he discovers he fathered a child whose mom has succommed to cancer they take her in only to find out she is expecting twins. They do have a perfect HEA.
Caine and Emelise’s story. Another fast-paced shifter fated mates story that was full of steam. This is the second book in the series and if you read the first you’ll notice there’s some overlap in what happens except now from Caine’s or Emelise’s POV. I had trouble getting into the characters and the story again. I liked the concept but hard for me to connect.
Some great tropes like fated mates, possessive MMC, independent FMC, steam, and more!
Wow! If your a hopeless romantic like me, this book will have you swooning and falling in love with the MMC. I love how independent and strong the FMC is, but how she understands how to be soft and vulnerable with MMC. I enjoyed the twists that came along the way, and I love how you get different chapters from different people. The ending is absolutely beautiful. Definitely intrigued to continue reading this series to see who's next in finding their mate.
Wow - I loved book one of this series and this book is just as good. Like book one, it was a great sweet shifter book with just the right amount of heat, with plenty of action to keep you turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down. I really hope this series continues as I feel the author definitely has more to give.
I don't know what is wrong with the girls in this series. I didn't like Lily and now I can't stand Emeline. But a book that makes you feel any emotion, is a good book and proof that it is well written. I loved the fast pace of the book but still get confused with the multiple points of view and the way they change. Overall a good series which I will keep reading
I am loving this shifter series by Angel Nyx!! 💕 The story is hot and so is Caine!🔥 Emelise and Caine’s story hits all the right notes and leaves you wanting more. Can’t wait for the next one in this fantastic new series.
What a glorious follow up to the first book in the series. Follow along as two more fall in love and find pure happiness, Can't wait to see what happens next with the rest of the crew!
This is my second book by this author and I loved it! She pulled me in from the very first page. One sexy Alpha and his stubborn but determined mate. Can she be the balance he needs in his life? You need to start this series. I'm glad I did.
Caine and Emelise story is just as great as thr first one. Eme has been through so much and keeps on showing her strength with e erything they are both going through. Loved how hes always there for her and tries to show that to her daily. Really enjoy this series so far.
Emelise was taught to never trust men because they'll break your heart. After her mother passes, she moves to NOLA and sees her mate, the Alpha of the Leopard Leap. Caine, the Alpha, is amazed when he meets his mate. Can he convince her that some men are reliable?
It picks up from book one and continues on but works as a standalone novel too. A fantastic read I couldn't put it down. It's easy to get attached and invested into the well written characters and definitely made me cry a bit.
Again Angel Nyx, has astounded me and really has swayed my opinion on shifter books. This book is my favorite so far and I can not wait to read the next one!!!
I bought this book before I had finished reading the first one because I enjoyed it so much. Angel delivered another great book, with all the great characters from the first book this felt like slipping into a nice comfy chair and welcoming friends into your home. This book was just as enjoyable as the first one I love the strength and independence of the females in these stories and the alpha males that compliment them. I look forward to the next book in this series by this wonderful author
