Easily the best of the MageLord trilogy. A clever premise that brings the story full circle (provided you don't think about it too hard). Martin clearly had his story arc planned from the start; it's a shame that the other books weren't quite this good and that Martin fell off the face of the earth after the publication of The House of Bairn.

Sigh. Time travel.
Although I found it interesting to learn about the beginnings of the House of Bairn, I found the time traveling aspects to be slightly clunky.

Bjorn gets transported back in time to when the MageLords still ruled the earth.

I really love this one, because I like feel-good stories where things go right for the protagonist, and he becomes a power to be reckoned with. The magic in this one is marvelous and powerful.

This is my favorite fantasy book that I have ever read. It is such a different take on magic, and I love how it brings the series full circle. It really is a shame Mr. Martin hasn't published anything since. Grab the whole series.
