I'm not a regular comic book reader. I had a hard time getting into this one. The art is very nice but seemed to overwhelm the story to me. In fact, early on there wasn't much story and I had a hard time following what was going on. Probably if I'd regularly read these comics I might know more and have been better able to figure out what was going on. So if you're a comics fan, don't let my review dissuade you from trying this book. I was kind of hoping for more.
Interesting, but rather aimless story that really doesn't conclude in this volume. I guess there must be more to come? (Even though this is the "complete" collection?) The artwork is rather variable throughout--pretty good to really good most of the time, with a few bad issues here and there. Ultimately though, what was the point of it all? Who is Skaar and why should I care one way or the other? A mix of Conan the Barbarian with elements of Flash Gordon, this series never really found its footing...
Giving this 3 stars hurts. It’s so imaginative, and continues the fascinating saga of Sakaar. Introduced in Planet Hulk. I really love this world.
So, what went wrong?
Well, to be honest... I’m not quite sure. Maybe it’s me.
I found the narrative a bit hard to follow. I couldn’t tell who the good guys or bad guys were. I couldn’t determine what the point was. What the hell is the old power again?
There just seemed to be a lack of focus. Sure, it was beyond awesome to see Galactus, Surfer and Hulk Sr... but to what end? Ultimately, it just didn’t seem like the series knew what it wanted to be.
The art was exquisite. This really, truly is a high quality piece of work... but the story is so lacking that I can’t justify higher than a 3.
