Brian Vaughan's Runaways is one of the true greats of modern comics, especially when all 42 issues are collected into one place like this.

Is it YA? Maybe. But Vaughan does such a great job creating and characterizing these kids that you don't notice. And then there's the plot. There are at least three truly great arcs in this collection, "The Good Die Young" (the original confrontation with the Pride), "Parental Guidance" (the return of Geoffrey Wilde), and "Live Fast" (where the Runways deal with their greatest failure). It's an ever-evolving comic with shocking plot twists and the feel of ... life. (You can see how this is the same author who later went on to even greater acclaim with Saga.)

Sadly, after this volume, a number of less-talented authors didn't really know what to do with the characters until some showed up in Avengers Arena and then Rainbow Rowell staged a pretty great return; read those next.

Runaways is an incredibly enjoyable read and is without a doubt one of the best contributions Brian K Vaughan has made to the Marvel universe.

The 90s LA atmosphere is the perfect setting for the wonderful characterisation that Vaughan and Alphonse have created here. The young protagonists are suitably likeable, but have just enough flaws to make them appear complex and allow for some great plot twists. The world itself feels extremely well rounded thanks to a few appearances from some more established Marvel characters.

Sure, it can all get a little whacky here and there, but that really is part of its charm at the end of the day. This isn't heavy reading by any stretch, this is just good old fashioned solid fun.

I will say though, for as good as the story is, the build of the actual omnibus is terrible. The binding is pretty atrocious so that may be something to consider if you're thinking of collecting a physical copy.

Overall, Runaways is a fun read that has an abundance of charm. The characterisation appropriately drives the narrative here and it's made wonderful because of it. That said, beware the evil binding on the actual physical hardback!

I did it, I finally finished! Loved every second of it too.

I already knew going into this that I love the Rinaways series, as I’ve been reading the Rainbow Rowell run as it’s been released, but I wanted to read the Runaways origin and learn more about why things were the way they were and I definitely was not disappointed. If anything I think reading this has heightened my enjoyment for the series, everything fully makes sense now whereas before there were holes in the story for me.

Also Brian K. Vaughan can do no wrong, creating this great bunch of kids and some other amazing series, he’s fast becoming a favourite author!

A book full of hype doesn't live up to it's expectations. I came into Runaways very very excited, I love Vaughn's work on Paper Girls and thought this book would be just another book for me to fall in love with, mix that with how much people praise this book and I thought where could it go wrong? Well it turns out in a lot of places. Starting this book out we meet a fairly large cast of characters, all of them kids that get together every year while their parents have a "meeting". This time however the kids decided to sneak in and see what their parents are up too only to find out they are super villans trying to destroy the world. The kids run away and the rest of the book follows their adventures being heros and escaping from their parents. On paper this sounds like a cool concept but the writing falls short of it being even remotely close to good. Full of CW-esque edge and random events that have no place in the story (an example of this being a vampire attack) make the story drag and make most of the characters unlikable at the beginning. For a majority of the first book the only likable characters are Alex and Nico but by the end, because of poor writing, both of the faulter and become two of the least likable in the group. The only characters in the book that actually feel like they grow as people are Karolina and Chase. Both of their stories are done well and make you actually feel for them as you see them go through the hardest time of their lives. The art also for me is just barley passable. Full of weird facial expressions and awkward movements it's not awful to look at but not very good either.
Overall runaways is a book full of potential that doesn't come close to cracking it. Vaughn really didn't understand how to properly pace a book when he was working on this and it shows, big time. If you want a good book by Vaughn about a group of teens, read paper girls instead.

This was so stinking delightful. Exactly the kind of comic I love. Witty, funny, adventurous and sweet. I was very excited to pick up this massive edition. Definitely worth the read. I will definitely be checking out the reboot!!

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational (plotline). Everyone in this room is now dumber for having (read) it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Never before have these words been more apt than in this travesty of an omnibus. My mind quite literally shit itself several times when trying to process the sheer unadulterated stupidity repeatedly vomited onto the page whilst forcing my way through about a quarter of this abortion, which is all I could stand. I urged myself on time and again. Just one more issue, just one more issue, but in the end, I couldn't go on. Not if I wanted to retain my sanity and self respect.
EVRYTHING about this is awful. The art is some of the worst I have ever seen. Seriously, Alphona's first few issues are abysmal. He raises the bar to simply dreadful from about issue 4 on wards, although it is still some of the most uninspired, land and boring artwork I've had the severe misfortune of viewing. And somehow, despite how bad it is, it pales in comparison to what I believe is meant to be writing here from Vaughn. I've never been his biggest fan. Everything I've ever read of his has bene vastly overrated, although this is some next level fuckery. I could fill an omnibus of equal size to Runaways, detailing in mind numbing detail everything he does wrong here, but here's just a tiny taster. The pacing is awful, the dialogue is reprehensible, and in no way rings true for any teenager or adult ever born onto this earth. The superhero parents motivations and abilities are woefully articulated, with them being either stupid, clueless, or perfectly capable of whatever it was the plot requires of them at the time. Nothing makes sense, the characters are all ridiculous, one dimensional tropes. Nothing comes within a million miles of either being logical or consistent with anything that came before it. In short, it is absolute shit. This really deserves a much more detailed excoriation, but I cannot bring myself to think about this nightmare for another minute. Anyone that recommends this to you, punch them in the face. They have no taste, and shouldn't be allowed to breed. 1/5

When people often say, a particular comic was “fun” I never quite understood it because, I never really found a “fun” book. I end up reading either something dreadful or captivating but, fun…isn’t something I’d describe a graphic novel. “The Runaways” by BKV was exactly that, “Fun.” It was an easy read, filled with moments that may seem cringe or even cheesy but, they resort back to being some lighthearted good ol’ “Fun.”

The art was okay, in one particular issue towards the end it was awful but, it works well with the writing.

The ending seemed lazy after such an exciting build up, so I give it 3.5 stars. However, If you want to read something “Fun,” look no further.

The art wasn't as good as I remembered. That's no knock on the artist, it was really good. But I've been influenced by the new series, the TV show, and the better art on Young Avengers. The storylines all hold up, the relationship between Xavin and Karolina is an underrated aspect of the series, and Nico's leadership is a real highlight.

Not enough stars.

Others have gone on and on about how this is one of the best stories in Marvel’s history, and the praise is deserved. As a handsome YouTuber once commented, this is the absolute perfect book for someone used to manga to try out some western comics.

One thing that was annoying, the binding on this omnibus was seriously bad. I expect another few read through and it’ll break.

2.5 for the first run of 18 issues from 2003 - Disjointed and doesn’t flow too well. Mediocre art. Highlight was the twist at the end involving a significant character.

4 for the second run of 20+ issues from 2005 - Vaughan clearly improved as a writer. The art is also a little better as well (still not great). Fun story and integrated other Marvel universe characters well.

3.5 total.

It was great to go back and re-read this series after many years collected in a a nice omnibus edition. One of my all time favorite marvel runs that is fun and adventurous that represents the struggles of adolescence in a superhero marvel way.

Como me gusta los diálogos que escribe este autor, qué maravilla. Coge el tono adolescente y les pone a interactuar, nos dice que viven aventuras superheroicas estándar pero que nos enseña como interactuan entre ellos. Me encanta

I wasn't really sure what to expect here, but I enjoy BKV a lot and wanted to give it a shot. I am so glad I did because this was a fun one. It starts with an interesting premise and then takes it some unexpected directions while crafting some realistic and relatable characters.

Excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the language is a little outdated, but that's understandable. Early 00's like any other era had its fair helping of pop culture.

Refreshing! Good stuff.

Cool book ! Loses a star for the art. Not a fan of that. Its also early Vaughnan, there is greatness, but he is still a little rough around the edges. Still a worthy title for fans of his work.

A heartfelt teen drama with a superhero edge, the series follows a group of kids who discover their parents are secretly supervillains. It unfolds as part road trip, part coming-of-age story, as they try to survive, figure out who they are, and deal with powers they barely understand. The writing balances humour, emotion, and tension, while the expressive art gives the book a distinctive look and energy.

From mature to completely immature, we have the teen Marvel book Runaways. I read this a while ago when it was first released and hyped to hell. I didn't love it then, but admittedly I'm not the audience. I can see the appeal though, it's a really fun book and is perfect entry point for those in the appropriate age range. I love the camaraderie of the characters and honestly there's so much heart and tons of bluster here. A really solid run that I've continued with Vol. 3-4.
