The Age of Fire is coming. It's written in the stars.
Trapped by dark magicians, the air nymph Kiri is running out of time. Like the rest of her kind, she’s bound to her homeland, and if she doesn’t return in seven days, she’ll die. Her only hope is in the magicians’ young apprentice, Darien, whose fierce gaze belies a kind heart. Despite her warnings, he helps her escape, and Kiri soon finds herself fleeing from relentless pursuers who will stop at nothing to recapture her and kill the boy who dared defy them.
With the magicians hot on their trail, Kiri and Darien embark on a treacherous journey through dangerous lands. But she soon learns that there’s more at stake than her own life. An ancient evil is stirring, one foretold to consume the world with fire. And Darien is at the center of it—though how, she doesn’t know.
Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on her life, and unless she can make it back to her land, she won’t live long enough to unravel the dark puzzles surrounding the intriguing, secretive young man—or stop the monstrous force bent on destroying everything.

"When it comes to magic, it's your intention that matters"
The time spans 25000, from the time Terrans treated the whole universe and all its beings with reverence and respect. As Windborn opens, that time has deteriorated to those who have magic and know it, and the other who just don't; but when they stumble upon this gift within, all hades could break loose.
This is the time we meet Kiri: a nymph, Darian:a magicians' apprentice, and Arrin:. a dreamer, inventor and in indentured servitude to a highborn woman. Can the three of them save the world from the Age of Fire? All in time to save Kiri?
I just loved this book. I read it in three long sittings but it felt that time stood still. Very different from "Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon", a steampunk fantasy which was my introduction to the author, Mary Fan has tapped high fantasy here: calling on myths and legends from many cultures to weave a fairly fast-paced YA/NA aimed story that fascinates all ages. The book I received as a gift from the publisher has a beautiful presentation as well. I'm looking forward to book 2. Highly Recommended.5/5
Liked the characters and plot but wished for more I thought this book would be an amazing book that I just wouldn’t be able to put down, but I was disappointed. The plot has great potential, but I just didn’t love it. Although I really loved the characters, I would have loved to gotten to know them a little better. It would have been nice to have more of a background story on Darian and Kira before they just jump into this story. Also, the back and forth in the time line was confusing to me and really interrupted the story itself.
Windborn very much has the feeling of the introduction to an intense & powerful series. In itself, the book is a slow burner that gives the reader the opportunity to get to know the characters before chaos ensues in the sequel. I’m very intrigued by the world building as we have mermaids, unicorns, sprites & a whole plethora of magical creatures (including possible dragons!) so I can’t wait to learn more in book two. Mary Fan is my favourite author & I have no idea how she manages to write & fuel so many different worlds & plots all in one go. Share some of your imagination with me, please?
⚠️ This book contains scenes of magical torture, mild violence & gore, false imprisonment, modern slavery(?) & distanced families ⚠️
I was sent a copy of this book by the author in return for an honest review.
