My kids and I loved reading through this book. It has a playful tone but also addresses an important topic: celebrating individuality.
Each animal thorughout the book makes a case that one feature they have is the MOST important thing -- e.g. a long neck (the giraffe), or green color (the frog), or long ears (the rabbit). And so on. As each animal makes a case, the child can use the extra flap on each page to see all the other animals displaying that feature in an imaginative and fun way. So, all of the animals, elephant, rabbit, frog, beaver, etc. get long stretchy necks in the illustration after the giraffe goes. I love the overall tone but the narrative here especially is great for young children. There is a repetitive rhyme to it and it makes for a fun read aloud.
This is nice to have a fun book with a coordinating important message, and I think young children will want to read this one again and again.
***Note: I was given a review copy of this book via Red Comet Press. Opinions are my own.

Hello, friends! Our book today is The Most Important Thing by Antonella Abbatiello, translated by Angus Yuen-Killick, a sweet and simple tale of celebrating differences.
One day, a group of animal friends are having a rather loud discussion over whose distinctive features are the “most important.” Rabbit insists that it’s long ears, while hedgehog is sure that it’s quills. Elephant extols the virtues of being big and having a trunk, while frog insists that everyone would find that being green is the way to be. With each new suggestion, the animals imagine themselves with such an adaptation: long necks like a giraffe, wings like a bird, or webbed feet like a duck. Finally, owl suggests that the answer to what the “most important thing” is perhaps more obvious than they realize…
A simple story with a classic message. This Italian import was first published in 1998, but has aged particularly well, likely due in part to its simplicity and genuine charm. Abbatiello’s illustrations are approachable and amusing, and the fold-out spreads of the animals imagining themselves as sharing the features of their friends are inventive and entertaining, especially for younger readers (JJ got a lot of laughs out of what a giraffe would look like with a trunk, or an alligator with beaver teeth). The text is uncomplicated and fun to read aloud, and Yuen-Killick did a great job with establishing meter in the rhyming refrain in this translation. The length is perfect for a storytime with young bookworms, and JJ loved it. An enjoyable title that imaginative animal lovers are sure to appreciate, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!
(Note: A copy of this book was provided to The Baby Bookworm by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.)
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is a story about what makes us special. The animals have all gathered together, and they are considering what is the most important feature. First, the rabbit says that the most important thing is to have long ears. All the animals imagine that they have large ears too. Next, the hedgehog says that it is most important to have quills, and the animals imagine that they have quills too. The discussion continues until owl suggests that maybe all of these are important - but on different animals that make them all unique and important.
What I loved: This is a story about the problem with comparing and the utility of appreciating all the things that make us different. Children will giggle as the animals are shown under flaps with what was suggested to be most important thing, such as with long necks or webbed feet. The repetitive nature of the story will work best for young readers, such as toddlers and preschoolers. The flap idea was pretty cool with reveals of the animals underneath. The font itself is large, clear, and easy to read throughout the book.
What left me wanting more: The images are really simple, which may work as pages turn quickly. While the pages are a bit thicker than typical, they are still fairly soft, and some of the flaps ripped the first time we read through it, perhaps because of the large size and tough little hands. The journey and conclusion was stated outright to give the theme and a more subtle approach may have worked better.
Final verdict: Overall, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is a silly picture book about appreciating the things that make us different.
-¡¿TODAS?! -dijeron los demás. -No, ¡no todas juntas!

A group of animals put their heads together and try to determine which physical attribute is the best to protect themselves. The bunny thinks it's his long ears. The bird believes it's his wings. While each animal announces its strength, the others picture themselves with that same trait. In the end, the owl teaches a valuable lesson that no one attribute is better than the other. Instead, each animal possesses different traits and that's what makes each and every one special and unique.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is a silly story that had my daughter laughing and wanting to reread it over and over. The illustrations are bold and humorous with animals possessing different parts of other animals. I love the message that the most important thing to be is you and how everyone is unique in their own way. Of course, it's perfect the owl is the one to say this because he's the wisest one of the bunch. The format is engaging with the flaps that fold out on each page to reveal a surprise from the animals, enough to stimulate a child's imagination.
Final Verdict: Overall, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is a very entertaining book. I would recommend this for parents looking to share a laugh with their child. It's also perfect for fans of animals and learning about their defense mechanisms against predators.
Smoothly translated from Italian by Angus Yuen-Killick, this charmer sets a great example of how to resolve conflict.
During a conversation, many different animals in the jungle compare their physical attributes and declare the attribute that makes them unique is the "most important". It is the wise old owl who came up with the solution that all could agree on.
Abbatiello's artwork is bold and colorful - very inviting and kid-friendly. Each animal is given a 4-page treatment, with the second page a two-page gatefold revealing all the animals with that attribute, making some funny images. (My personal favorite is the snake with wings.) There is interplay with fonts of the text, which will help readers and beginning readers to read it with expression. I commend Yuen-Killick on using multiple verbs used for "asked"; this makes it an excellent vocabulary-builder. This could also be used by beginning readers.
Excellent to use in units on identifying animals, stories that are also games, and team-building.
A wonderful book that humorously introduces the topic of appreciating our differences. All the animals meet to discuss what the most important quality might be. With delightful rhythmic text and surprise fold-out pages revealing what life would be like if the animals all had long necks or trunks or spines, this book is pitch perfect for sharing the concepts of differences with young children and how we each have something unique to share. The warm inviting illustrations make this feel like a classic that could easily be shared with young children from 2 to 6 years of age. Plenty to discuss and enjoy.
Told as a fable, this is a story of animals trying to discover what physical characteristic is most important to their own survival, only to discover that the answer is not the same for everyone. What's most important to one is not the same as what's most important to another. The illustrations are amusing, and though the story is certainly didactic, that's kind of the point. It's a pleasant, quick read with a easily recognized rhythm that any young readers could easily follow.
Loved this picture book. Nice illustrations with a big fold out page on every opposite page. The story asks the reads, what unique feature of an animal is more important than another's animal's unique feature. Is a long giraffe's neck more important than the sharp quills of a hedgehog or green coloring of the frog? Read the book to find out THE MOST IMPORTANT THING :-)
A heartfelt story that highlights the importance of what makes us unique and different, and how there is no one correct way to be! Everyone has gifts that are important and needed, and coming together with our gifts is the "Most Important Thing"!
An engaging, humorous fable introducing the idea that differences should bhe appreciated and that unity can be found in diversity. Colorfully illustrated with large fold-out pages.
Belli i disegni, molto apprezzati dai piccoli.
Translated from Italian, this story tells of a group of different animals telling each other what is the most important thing to have to survive in the wild. Each animal tells with they think according to their individual make-up, but it is the wise old owl who finally settles the dispute.
