I also watched Doc Martin and Bodkin.

I recently saw one of the Morons Are Great Americans who whilst insulting an essayist whom I mention, complain to her that I list other trans creators. The Snowflake (nasty, desperate to be noticed, arrogant US man-baby) no longer surprises. A trigger warning then.

The channels I list include political historian, Irish, asexual, tall, sewist, cosplayer, bi, artist, farmer, socialist, lesbian, mathematician, language historian, theoretical physicist, trans, French, pensioner, architect, astrophysicist, het, autist, linguist, married, queer, WOC, older, model builder, cis, primatologist, anarchist, physically challenged, military boardgamer, Canadian, miniatures painter, redhaired and other creators known as Women.

Almost as threatening are other BIPOC, art historian, New Zealander, wood worker, miniatures wargamer, boater, modeller, archaeologist, short, chemist, game historian, neurodivergent, Ugandan, other LGBTQI, archaeologist, reenactor, paleontologist, communist, military historian, tailor, Danish, writer, zoologist and other creators known (outside the USA) as Human Beings.

If the voices insist, I suggest emergency therapy, immediate adoption of a healthy hobby (not to include assaults against suspected immigrants which is mental illness) or seeking the nearest Sikh temple.

When the thought of those mental members generates disgust and fatigue, I think back to the Ukrainian POW who puffed a cigarette while being filmed by Russian soldiers. His last words before being murdered were "Slava Ukraini!". With his example in mind, I must continue. Glory to the Heroes. Glory to Ukraine. Crimea is Ukraine.

Once more, unto the book. The greatest challenges for most Kindle Unlimited titles seem in fantasy, romantasy, romance, science fiction and possibly all current US genre print to be worldbuilding and plot. Neither are demanded by print publishers or Amazon (which is a major ebook publisher).

When stories suffer from lack of worldbuilding, there is little context for character description or framework for development. Without plot a story is reduced to vaguely connected scenes.

In this book the character work is undercut by glimpses into an illogical background and better than serviceable prose is squandered. Worse still is that decent prose accentuates weakness in character motivation, reaction and interaction.

As with almost all Unlimited selections, spacefaring is limited to US citizens. I no longer refer to the American, which is an arrogant appropriation of the names for two entire continents. It is very US hegemonic, reflects US Manifest Destiny and Monroe Doctrine. Its use seems inappropriate applied to the twitching corpse of decaying empire.

Aliens setting up in Washington DC, while an almost universal background in US print science fiction is already become dated. Only The US reader does not find that an irritating given.

The main character spends the entire book acting on impulse, with consequences to the beings around her. She barely acknowledged the impact of her decisions on others. She had been isolated from other humans for close to twenty years and had spent those years a slave. Despite that it was difficult to invest emotionally.

She behaved as if a willful fourteen year old. I hope that there is more to her story. Other characters challenge her behaviour, yet she ignores advice. The book could have been much better.

I mentioned those flaws in the original but was so surprised by the writer's line by line writing that I labelled it a good book. That is proof enough that a diet of the subpar might alter your perspective.

Consider treating this as a hostile site. 🤔

Goodreads do not encourage discourse. As example, I wrote a short review of Powers of the Earth by Travis Corcoran.

He self-described as libertarian (now anarcho capitalist without millions), advocate for the return of chattel slavery (given the expansion of US prison labour to new forced labour prisons for the homeless and given US history and current culture, generational slavery must be on the cards), veteran, employee of an unnamed US agency, and admirer of the war criminal Putin (another popular US position, the fascistic seem drawn to the fascism).

I had found the story of a rich twat enlisting the military in overthrow of the US government in order that he not pay taxes to be dangerous, unhealthy and now prophetic.

The writer and six fellow patriots were incensed by my judgement. They very generously committed a year long comment stream and introduced me to correct thought regarding fiction, history, political theory, challenged the narcissism inherent in my silence, noted my lacking in intelligence and more.

The scale of such a gift mitigated my disappointment in not receiving new insight into the post Cambrian die off.

The levels of irony almost overwhelmed my poor communist soul.

The final comment to that review, was delivered by Claes Rees, Jr aka cgr710 now ka Clayton R Jesse, Jr who no longer identifies as Nazi. After referencing the contents of
my last exchange with a Goodreads friend, he gleefully announced that They had "won" (?).

I discovered that They had launched a flood of vile sexual, racist, anti-LGBTQI and similar attacks against apparently every female creator I referenced. It continues still.

They failed to impress the physicist, boater, sewist, primatologist and other female creators but did manage to increase world's store of unpleasantness. In addition They delivered a wonderful self-portrait of the Snowflake (deranged, vicious, emotionally damaged US baby-man in a snit) to a multinational audience which seems was quite the Victory.

Goodreads discourse is interesting.

Stupidity and Ignorance are very different states. Ignorance is suggested as inescapable by the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Stupidity on the contrary is the self-imposed uncritical acceptance of a programmed narrative which purports to answer any allowed question. No challenge to any element can be tolerated and every forbidden belief is cast as an existential threat to the adherent.

This would explain the vicious attempts by some members and a number of Amazon employees to punish any whose judgement of the accepted drivel and embedded political, social, broad gender and ethnic descriptions are considered unkind.

It was at that point a fairly common comment stream. It became more interesting later.

Ominous music begins. 😊 This site is dominated by readers who are not known globally as fans of critical thinking, critical reading or broad general knowledge. Having formed comment gangs apparently supported by volunteers, Their activities include the doxxing, stalking, threat and more.

Amazon have not to my knowledge taken action against these thugs, disciplined writers who organise them or dismissed employees who enable either.

Only after visiting BookTubers addressing the extremes taken against disappointed romantasy and romance readers did I realise how pervasive was the practice.

My limited messaging was given over to these damaged members, after which Pine Gap Centre requested that Australian Intelligence interrogate the one friend whom I messaged occasionally.

While the attempt at my history failed, two customers were outraged. We received no response from Amazon. Amazon only reacted after we publicised our experience.

At that point my page format and options were returned to normal, Lurkers whom I had not previously been Allowed to remove were disappeared, even Kindle internet interruptions ceased. Yes Virginia, Amazon own the capability to render your device just short of useless.

Recently a seventh EBay ex-employee was sentenced for harassment of a couple whose small ecommerce channel was deemed unkind to EBay. They were awarded several millions and the ex-employee had been the Chief of EBay Global Security or some such. The behaviour of the data corporations as they march towards Techno Feudalism should become more gross.

Some precautions against Amazon madness are suggested. Remove all personal information from profile and avoid messaging. Remove all lurkers, those who never post. They are likely monitors for gangs or employee dummies, not admirers.

Given Goodreads' penchant for Alterations to customer pages, the screenshot of the odd, ugly or threatening are invaluable. With these, exposure to Goodreads should be safer.

Kindle are a more serious matter. Do Not use Kindle Contacts, Calendar, Files, Email. I confirmed that Amazon employees read customer emails without permission or notice. Make of that what you will.

Do Not "purchase" Amazon ebooks, as you own your device only. Downloads are subject to deletion at Amazon's whim. Had I known this before purchasing several hundred titles, I'd not have purchased a single one.

Silk searches should be innocuous and non-critical.

Should you doubt the ugly fanaticism of many US members and site employees, may the gods protect you. Ominous music ends. 😊

Be safe and may we all find good reading. 🤗

I have to confess that this book left me somewhat underwhelmed. I have read the Empire Rising series by the same author and liked it a lot. My reviews of those books can be found here. Thus I thought there would be a good chance that I would like this one as well. Unfortunately this one is quite different and, as I wrote, it left me underwhelmed.

At first I thought maybe this was an earlier work by this author but, as it turns out, it is actually written after the first couple of books in the Empire Rising. I guess the author aimed for a slightly different reader segment in this one. It is much more science fiction with emphasis on fiction and it feels much more like a young adult type of story.

The story focuses a lot, obviously, on Sarah and her quest to get back home to Earth. However, it moves at a very fast pace and Sarah’s adventures is somewhat less than credible. At the same time she is naive and sometimes downright stupid to the extent that it becomes cringe-worthy.

The action in the book is not that bad although both the quality of the story, the action and the characters are nowhere near that of Empire Rising. It is not a bad book and if you are into the more “fantastic” and superficial young adult style stories you will probably find it quite good. I however, did expect something of the same level as Empire Rising and thus found the book to be a bit of a disappointment.

This will not stop me from having a go at the second book in the series though. As I wrote, it is not a bad book and I kind of would like to know where the story goes. I also did like that the arrogant Elders do get a human boot up their arse…more than once.

Interesting beginning

I have enjoyed reading this book, we will have to wait and see if Mr Holmes writes a second book. I am sure that there is still more adventures for Sarah to come. I recommend you read his other books as well.

Awful

Story was drivel and predictable, limited character development. The writing often confused pronouns, doubled words, and was generally unreadable. I won't finish the series.

A good little adventure.

This is a fast paced story. There is much to do. This at times leaves characters and their side adventures underdeveloped. It is not that much of a distraction. There is room for more creative work around the ships, their weaponry and tactics. On the whole, the book is a fun page-turning adventure. I enjoyed reading it.

Not Worth the Time

The storyline initially shows a strong promise to deliver but as the story moves forward, that begins to unravel and by 50% the book has become an embarrassing collection of suppositions, forced actions, juvenile reactions, and logical inconsistencies. I quit reading when the storyline has Sarah landing on Earth, alone, in the countryside and attacked by wolves. Complete shutdown for me with disbelief. I see no reason to continue with either the book, the series, or this author.

Good plotline

This book started out great but over time I came to really dislike the main character. I liked the plot and the concept and it was well written but something about her just did not sit well. She was an idiot. Too impulsive, too self centered and way too naive. Her decisions seemed arbitrary. It also moved a bit too quickly with not enough emotional involvement.

I've read a lot of the negative reviews of this book, and can agree with quite a few of them on several points. I am, however, more than willing to give this author the benefit of the doubt considering just how amazingly good his Empire Rising series was. If you haven't already read that, I strongly, STRONGLY suggest you do. It is a master work, and this book so far definitely isn't a fair representation of how well this author can write.

Having said all that however, I would still (hesitantly) recommend this book, although with the caveat being the unknown strength of the follow-on books.

My willingness to give this author the benefit of the doubt comes from two places. First is the strength of the Empire Rising series and second is the fact that this author has experienced a very personal tragedy in his life which ( and this is guesswork, not knowing his personal timeline) may very well have influenced the overall decline in quality of this particular book.

If that is the case, and he indeed gets back on form for the follow-up two books in this trilogy, you can expect a well-written, rip-roaring thrill ride for the rest of the series.

Only time will tell, but I'm willing to put the time into reading the rest of the series to find out.

I hope there is a sequel for this book, because I would like to see the character grow.

I gave this book a three star rating because I did not like the main character, even though she had to develop into her own I believe all the things she accomplished in the book will buy blind luck. In the beginning of the book she was very naïve and kind of silly but I am waiting the second book hopefully to see how she has matured. There’s plenty of science fiction and technology to keep any signs fiction buff interested, I believe there’s a lot of story to tell. So I hope that people will read this book and cause the author to write a sequel.

I'm not sure about the science end of this book as there wasn't as much background or explanation on the technical aspects but I did enjoy the stories and the characters. The main character was developing nicely as the story progressed, although I have to confess that her interaction with Ranneck and her complete and quick trust based solely on his species was a little annoying. Other than that I enjoyed how the story progressed and thought there was some decent world building throughout. There's definitely a lead up to hopefully another good story and I look forward to reading the next one when it comes out.

Standard fare.

Typical plot. Lowly human bonds with omnipotent technology, makes friends, defeats enemies, struggles for purpose, makes way too many stupid decisions, overcomes the repercussions, falls in love, sort of. You've read it before. Far too many typos. Almost no character development aside from the repetitive recitation of the events that form the main character's motivation. Far too many situations that severely strain believability. A B movie that goes well with a snowy afternoon, if you have nothing better to do.

It kept me guessing the whole way through.

Just when I thought I knew how the book was going to go the story would take a sudden turn and add a new twist. It made for an enjoyable read. The story did bog down a little in the middle of the book but the second half and the end of the book more than made up for it.

There was very little swearing and no nudity in this book which is a very good thing. I give it an extra star for this reason.

I hope to read more about Sarah and Kevin and the others as they fight against the tirancal Eldar.

A DJH. SYFY. Novel (VHSB. - 1)/The Al!ever Rulers Came From Space and Enslaved A!l People of Earth

DJH. has. penned the first novel in the Voyage Home Saga, which shows a race of aliens, called the Elders to take over Earth as well as other planets to enslave the indigenous people regardless of level of society. Earth was Tier One planet who h meant all would be enslaved because of the Earth's people who were prone for violence. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DSHS

what an amazing story. what a beginning to a new world

DJ has outdone himself with this book. I admit I love everything he writes but I would love to see him revisit this new universe. So many stories left to share. Please write another book.

If you love sci-fi, artificial intelligence characters this is for you. Makes me remember why I fell in love with shows like Farscape and guardians of the galaxy and books from Mike Shepard and MD Cooper.

Good book

It's a great read. Good character development and a great storyline. I would've given this book a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the editing errors towards the end of this book. Through most of this book, there was a couple of editing errors. But towards the last 30 percent or so there was a lot more.

Good read waiting for sequel

Sarah is a good human character, and the story is very good. Lots of aliens some good some really nasty. You get caught up in all the action which does stop. A few good twists in the plot leaves you with what’s around the next bend in the story. Enjoyed.

Staying up late

Again I just couldn't put the book down. Staying up late again well past midnight because I just couldn't put it down. Although spell check corrects misspelled words, it doesn't select the correct word that the author intended. A few gems to find and chuckle over.

Solid space adventure, quick read

It took me awhile to get started but I really enjoyed it. It has a plucky young heroine, dastardly space pirates, and an evil high tech empire with a ruthless navy. I enjoyed the journey, but like a summer blockbuster just go along for the ride. This one is fun but not too serious.

A good read

Coming from the Empire Rising series, I knew this would be a good story. I was not prepared for it to be this good however. It's gripping and very quickly pulls you in. The idea of a shared mind melding is very scarce and makes a good plot point and a good difference in the genre.

Weak start but a decent finish. The majority of this book read like a re-boot of the '80s movie "Flight of the Navigator". It was a bit more polished but just as juvenile. It did tie up into a fairly solid conclusion even if it did reach too far at various points. I might pick up the next book in the series but I enjoyed the author's "Empire Rising" series much, much more.

Disappointed

I read the 10 book ,Empire ,series this author wrote and loved it. 5 stars for every book in that series. That's why I was so disappointed with this book. Almost as if it was written by a different person. I honestly couldn't get through the entire book and had to quit halfway through. Oh well

There had better be a sequel

If there isn’t a sequel I’m going to be very disappointed. This is an outstanding story and I demand more. I’m only giving it four stars instead of five because of the editing. While not terrible, the editing isn’t what it should be.
