Five years after she escaped from the house of Jack the Ripper, Maddie thinks she's put her troubles in the past. She's started a new life, and she tries every day to forget about the horrors she experienced. But then a familiar figure appears at her office, and she realizes old ghosts might still be waiting for her.

Soon Maddie learns the horrifying truth about the creature she freed from the basement, and about the creature's determination to return to this world. Drawn back to the house on Cathmore Road one final time, Maddie finally has to face not only the creature itself, but also her own role in a terrifying plot.

The Final Act is the eighth and final book in a new horror serial, titled The House of Jack the Ripper.

3.5 rounded up.
I'm kinda not happy that I stuck with this series for this kind of an ending. The ultimate ending suited me just fine. The journey to get there, didn't satisfy me..so many loose ends were tied up mostly through dialogue, and there were a couple of them that left me scratching my head still trying to make complete sense of them. It wasn't rushed, just mostly done verbally. I felt like this was Cross' way of summing everything up easily. The dying part (hell?) Really confused me more. Overall, I'm glad I read the series, but wish the ending had been neater

This was a bit of a departure from the other 7 books in the series. Set 5 years after the conclusion of book 7, this goes into a lot more detail about Maddie, her origins, and her link to the whole story. I had mentioned before that I felt that things were going to take a turn a touch too far, and that I would have preferred them to stay more focused on the original storyline - I stand by that opinion. This is not a bad book by any means. Amy Cross has created a full back story that links in Maddie with the others that makes sense, but in a way that feels separated from the core structure, giving it a feeling of reading a spin off, as opposed to the final chapter that this book is. The whole supernatural aspect was certainly always present, but more of a background feeling, whereas this book is almost wholly centered around this and doesn't quite gel for that reason.

A good, if somewhat mildly disappointing ending to a really good series, and another great discovery of a new author to follow.

Disappointing end to a fine series

I did not enjoy this final book, too much unnecessary horror, and I felt the author was just trying to wrap up the loose ends and move on. This was a pity because most of the other seven installments were so good. Perhaps the series should have been drawn to a close earlier. What a pity!

This series overall was quite entertaining. It was a bit more straight horror than I normally read, but I'm a (fan?) of the Jack the Ripper story so I was excited to try it, and I'm glad I did. This final book of the series was possibly the most disappointing of the bunch. There's the typos that are prevalent, especially in the first parts of the book. They bother me a bit, as there's quite a few, but I'm not a big grammar stickler. It did tend to pull me from the story a bit. Mainly I was just a bit disappointed in the story itself, as I'd grown to enjoy the parallel of timelines in the first seven books. Also, the house was nearly a character in itself, but was less a part of the story. It was a fairly bold ending, in my opinion, and I want to applaud that, but ultimately I kind of wished the last book had stayed a bit more inline with the previous installments.

That being said, still a fun read and a series I would recommend. I'm happy to have found them.

I found that as I continued with this series, it reached a beautiful climax in The Lady Screams and kinda fell after that. Amy Cross did a great job with the conclusion. I wasn't fully satisfied until the epilogue. Knowing that the fight could continue for generations was so cool. I thought the glimpse of the 'afterlife' was interesting. I don't know how you would continue living normally after seeing that. Overall a great series that I can see myself rereading in the future. My favourite book was The Lady Screams and I doubt I will stop thinking about that book for a while.

Great Ending to a Great Series

This is the last book in the series. Maddie may have escaped the house with its sordid past but the house has somehow stayed with her..and the killings continue. Will Maddie defeat the houses secrets or will she simply become one of its many victims?
Get this series and be hooked!!!

All in all a good series. The last volume was a bit OTT, but it fit with the previous volumes. What bothered me tremendously, though, was the poor editing throughout the series, making for quite some mistakes (grammatical, lexical, etc.). I know Amy Cross is a very prolific author, but good editing still remains important. Then again, good series!

The series had me anxious to read the next book. I am unsure how I feel about the ending of the book (and series) but all in all it was a joy to read. Amy Cross has become one of my favorite authors since I ran across a book that she had for free. If you like haunting books give Amy Cross a try.

What a finale

Sad to say the story is over but what an ending. Probably the most disturbing book out of the entire series. Sad to see it finally end but what a trip it was. Loved it so much.

Great Ending

Again some editing errors, won't detract from the story. I enjoyed this series immensely. I'd have liked to know a bit more about the characters alive and dead. Still a good read.

Final chapter

Not the ending that was expected, but I don't know what ending I was expecting. How do you explain to further generations that what you're doing is for the world's own good and they should carry on the tradition? Excellent story, thank you!

Great Series

If you are interested in Jack the Ripper, this series gives an interesting theory of why Jack killed the women. Even if you don't like the Ripper stories this series keeps you guessing until the very end. Enjoy reading the series; I did.

A good ending to this series, a different take on the Jack the Ripper murders.

Five years after Maddie's ordeal and...

Fast-paced, the story concludes and the mystery is solved. Most things are explained with a satisfying end.

Nasty but good - a recommended series.

Good

As always, Amy has another winner. I enjoyed
the book but I'm ready to move on to another subject. I was getting a little tired of Maddie.

I think I liked the first book better. No so much gore in it. You can't beat Amy Cross for writing great books though. Give her a try, you'll love her writing.
