READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

Before you read this review: Please note that this is book 2 in a duet. I usually keep my reviews as spoiler-free as possible but please don't read on if you haven't finished book 1 yet.

Consequence starts right where Constant ended. There is a consistency in the pattern we get switching between present and past - this time the past is told from Sayer's point of view, which helped to understand the kind of people Sayer and Caro are.

Sayer is a wonderful hero. There is no one else for him but Caro and he would do anything, ANYTHING to keep her safe and protected. He walks through fire for her. I loved his loyalty and devotion to Caro so much. The way he was consumed by her was beautiful.
“If I’ve fought hard for anything, it’s been you. If I’ve wanted anything at all, it’s been you. If I’ve loved anything in this life of mine, it hasn’t been the brotherhood or the bratva or thieving, it’s been you. It’s always been you, Caro. From the day I met you till the day I die.”

Sayer is also a criminal mastermind and when I saw the magnitude of his con play out my jaw dropped. Fecking genius. When he was introduced to his daughter my heart broke a little for him. There were definitely not enough Sayer/Juliet scenes and I would have loved a bit of a build-up of their relationship.

When you have a hero who thinks his woman hung the moon you want her to be deserving of it. I loved Caro in the first book. She was a strong, female lead, smart and cunning. In Consequence I got frustrated with her. She gave me whiplash on this emotional roller coaster. In this installment she blamed Sayer pretty much for everything that happens.
He had always been the one person I could count on, the one man that would take care of me and tell me the truth no matter what. And now I had to sort through the wreckage of this fallout to find the truth buried in the layers upon layers of lies.

In her mind and heart she betrayed her love for him so many times I never felt that she deserved this beautiful man who wanted nothing but Caro in his life. I have to say that many times she came across hypocritical, melodramatic and a little bitchy. If there is one positive thing I can say about her role in book 2 it's that she was an amazing mother. Her daughter always came first.

With all that being said, I still enjoyed many aspects. I know there is a story between Frankie and Agent Mason Payne and I'd like to discover what's going on there. Gus needs a story too. i hated to see him distressed for most of the story. Also I would have liked to see a heart-to-heart with Caro.

I loved the storyline of Consequence. The suspense almost killed me and Consequence packed definitely more action than Constant. My Kindle was attached to my fingers and I didn't let go unless I had to. You know...for insignificant things like...work. or potty breaks. Anyhoo.

Rachel Higginson is without a doubt a skilled and talented writer. Her stories captivate you and draw you in and while the conclusion of the duet didn't live up to my high expectations it was still one hell of a ride. It's full of intrigue, deceit, suspense, angst and an epic love story.

As always the reminder to check out the other reviews - we all experience books and characters differently! Even though this one didn't work out for me completely it totally resonate with you!
This man was everything to me. He was my friend and lover. My savior and soulmate. He was the beginning and the end.

Consequence was a different type of story than the first part. It was high in intensity and had far much more action than Constant. There was much more mafia involvement as the characters tried to navigate their way to survival. Who do they trust? And will their con work?

I loved how the author drew me into this story and had me wanting to run in the other direction. My fear for these characters was profound, and although I knew that things HAD to work out for the better, getting to the happy ending was a thrilling and suspenseful ride. I loved Sayer in this book and I couldn’t get enough of Gus. I’m hoping he makes it into a book of his own some day. I’m so glad with the way things ended up for Atticus - just desserts, my friend.

There was one question that kept running through my mind while reading this story: when did Sayer ever give Caroline a reason to doubt him? Seriously. She never believed his words or his actions. She constantly questioned his motives. But I couldn’t find a time when he lied to her or was against her. So why was she allowed to get away with treating him like crap? Why??? So did I like her any better this time around? Nope. I hated her more. She was rude, immature and quite frankly, I really wanted Sayer to leave her the heck alone. I wanted her to flounder around trying to defeat the mafia all by herself. Since she craved her independence so much and thought Sayer deserved her distrust, she should have done everything alone. See how far she got. HATED HER!!

My reactions in gif format:

"“You still don’t get it, Six. I will go anywhere you are. I will do anything you want to do. It’s not about the brotherhood or being the boss. Everything, everything I have ever done, is about you. I only want to be with you.”"

"And besides, it wasn’t how we started that mattered… it was how we ended up."

LOVE this series!!!! Highly recommend!!

“I want to be in this. All the way in this. With you. And with Juliet."

Hello Sayer!! I will keep this review spoiler-free because this book must be read AFTER Constant, book one in this dare I say epic duet. This is the perfect conclusion to this sexy, intense story and picks up immediately following the disappearance of Caro's daughter. The most important reason for Caroline leaving her old life behind was to protect her child and now she needs Sayer's help to get her back.

Sayer has loved Caroline from the time they were kids. He always knew she would be his savior, the one bright light in his otherwise grim and dangerous life.

"She was young. I knew that. Three years younger than me. But she was also the loveliest creature I had ever seen. My entire world felt like the gloomy, icy day outside. Except for her. She was the light I had never seen until now. She was the pure and innocent and beautiful I had never been allowed to touch until now."

I wasn't expecting such a fast-paced, sexy thriller but Rachel Higginson really turned up the heat in this one. Will Sayer and Caro ever break free of their past? Will the Russian mafia always be stalking them? This story wrapped everything up perfectly with intelligence, passion and non-stop thrills. I absolutely love a second-chance romance and this one is one of my favorites.

"I’d had nothing but bad luck and hard breaks until the day I met you. And it wasn’t because you were the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen in my entire life, it was because you gave me hope for the first time ever."

Caroline is a strong, smart and feisty heroine and Sayer is a broody, possessive alpha who will not give up until Caro is safe. He has tried to outsmart his old gang but will they be able to protect Caroline's young daughter and themselves? The ending was perfect. I absolutely loved this duet and would love to read Frankie's story next!

"You breathed into my death and gave me life for the very first time."

As I read Consequence, the sequel to Constant, I kept thinking of a yo yo: the actions would spin forward, but then just as quickly slam to a halt, leaving us dangling, just short of any destination, with us readers wondering "What was that all about?" The plot was all over the place.
Towards the middle and end of the story, the image of daisies came to mind: you know: she loves him, she loves him not.... I lost track of how many times Caro kept falling back into her old familiar hang ups and insecurities: did Sayer ever really love her? How could he betray her so and tied her to the mob like that? How could she ever trust him again - etcetera and etcetera. All of this melodramatic back and forth, just for the sake of filler.
This author is usually very good with dialogue: she usually kept it short and snappy in her other novels. But for a while there, Shakespeare was being given a run for his money with a few epic soliloquies from both Sayer and Caro.
This series, like so many out there, needed to have been reduced to one long but satisfying novel. Constant started off with so much promise: I was really drawn in by young Sayer and Caro and the terrible world they lived in. There were some sweet scenes in this sequel, but, for the most part, there wasn't much new or even overly exciting happening in this second novel, apart from the last two chapters. I was disappointed: this storyline had so much promise, and the characters - before they became caricatures - were so appealing and in love. I'm going to rate this one a 3.5 out of 5.

***DUET REVIEWED AS A WHOLE***

“He was the one constant in my life that had pushed me through the darkness. He was the one constant in my life that loved me beyond everything else, beyond what I was or had been or could ever be. He wanted me to be better. He wanted to be better for me. The problem was he was as tangled in the madness as I was.”

What a thrill ride this has been! Beautifully written and wildly exhilarating, this action-packed second chance romance—set in the dangerous criminal underworld of kingpins, mobsters, and professional con artists—had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. With my knee bouncing with both anxiety and anticipation, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, desperate to piece together a story that is bursting at the seams with complex subplots and unexpected twists and turns, whilst still being infused with the kind of emotional intensity and strong romantic element I’ve come to expect from Rachel Higginson. I couldn’t have loved it any more than I did!

I’m not normally drawn to mobster-type stories but CONSTANT got under my skin and pulled me in, so I was ready to read the completion in CONSEQUENCE. This is a fast-paced culmination, picking up from the abrupt ending of CONSTANT and diving into the distraught emotions of Sayer and Caroline.

The angst was pretty unrelenting in this story, apart from the rather confusing ability of Caro to distract herself from the chaos and emotion of All that said, Sayer and Caro had chemistry, it was undeniable but it was an unsettled chemistry with lots of unanswered emotional questions between the pair. I think this was the reason I couldn’t look away from these two even when I didn’t agree with or understand their actions.

Sayer and Juliet just went ahead and melted my heart. Despite who Sayer was, I needed their meeting and their acceptance of one another. I actually wanted more of these two in the book.

Sayer stared at her, his eyes turning glossy with unshed tears.

“You know, I thought I should ask. My dad never asked me if anything was okay. I thought it would be nice to give you the choice.”

I found myself a little less interested in The Bratva intrigue in this book and it was a scary world to be existing in with a family. Bratva was supposed to be family and even in the face of both Sayer and Caroline having awful families, Bratva was not any kind of substitute.

The ending was a little rushed but I enjoyed the duology as a whole, with CONSTANT really standing out as my favourite.

I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.

Dramatic, suspenseful, and romantic in a way that I was completely unprepared for - Consequence, the second book in Rachel Higginson's The Confidence Game series, is some kind of crazy wild ride from which I'm still catching my breath! I was on the edge of my seat for much of this story, the twists and turns kept my head spinning and my heart beating rapidly while the truth was slowly uncovered and Caroline and Sayer's story reached it's sort of epic conclusion.

I wasn't always sure how I felt about Caro and Sayer. I didn't trust them and because of that I sometimes struggled to connect with them. On top of that, the story dragged for me - just a little bit - during the middle. I think I was impatient to get to the bottom of all the mysteries and figure out if it was safe to love everybody the way my heart wanted to. However, these little bumps in the road were completely worth it because that ending?

Whoa.

That ending was everything. I loved how things wrapped up and once things began unraveling, everything completely came together for me. Yes, in the end I completely adored Caro and Sayer and the band of merry misfits with whom they surrounded themselves (sigh. Mad love for Gus and Frankie.)

As I said, this duet was a wild ride. It messed with my head and it messed with my heart but in the end it left me on a reader high that I never even saw coming. Amazing. Definitely not one to miss! ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

Well, hot damn, Consequences picks up right where Constant left us all hanging with bated breath!

Now Sayer and Caroline are desperate to find their daughter—and to face the reality of their past meeting their present. And it’s NOT a pretty sight.

I loved the inner turmoil that Sayer and Caro suffered—that they were so desperate to share but also extremely scared of the truth being revealed. There were so many secrets and lies and lies by omission that sometimes it was a bit of a distraction. Times when I wanted to yell at Sayer and Caroline to get out of their own heads and just communicate.

But I never doubted Sayer and Caroline’s love for each other—their need to protect the other even from themselves. Knowing that their love never died over time and distance and just what they each did to ensure that the other was safe and alive.

I did love the flashbacks of the actions that set the path of their future—and how everything was finally revealed in the end! It was a heart stopping feeling once the layers started to peel back and the truth came out. Be prepared for lots of surprises! ~ Missy, 4 stars

“Caroline was mine. She would always be mine. But more importantly, I was hers.”

I was so damn excited to get my hands on the epic conclusion to Sayer and Caroline’s hard-fought and exhilarating love story. It had to be tough following the first book in the duet, but Rachel did it and she did it REALLY WELL! I relished the thought of immediately diving in and getting sucked back into this world of thieves, liars, and criminals. I was excited to get back to Sayer, Caro, and the rest of the gang. Emotions ran high, and so did mine…the entire way through!

The author switched it up a bit with book two, giving us a more grittier, more raw romantic suspense than the first. In CONSEQUENCE, the game continues but we dive deeper into the mob world where everyone has a motive, an opportunity. Everyone is a threat and no one trusts anybody…not even the ones you love the most. We get to see Caroline in her element. The way she loves the game and hates it at the same time. In the first book she was running from her past life. Now, we see her running towards her demons in order to keep her family safe. She has no other choices and yet, we find out, that she never truly did.

Everything about this book kept me on my toes. It’s entertaining as hell, suspense flows in an out of every single page, and my lord, is it SEXY as SIN! Sayer is dark, secretive, and delicious! Caroline is sassy, feisty, and loves with her whole heart. Together, these two are quite a match. When secrets are finally spilled will Caroline and Sayer’s relationship survive the consequences?

Sayer and Caroline were INCREDIBLE characters! Their love story is indeed quite EPIC…very sexy Romeo and Juliet, with a better happily ever after, of course. But they weren’t the only two characters that I loved and I can only hope that the other characters make their voices heard to the author, because I would love to read their stories too!

This is a DUET, so be sure to start with Book One - CONSTANT, if you haven’t already! If you have, well, enjoy the amazing finale to Sayer and Caro’s romance!

"This man made me stupid. He was every bad decision and hasty regret. He was all my wrong choices and abandoned dreams."

'Consequence' is the followup to 'Constant' and picks up after that helluva cliffhanger that left us all with our jaws on the ground and eager to get our hands on this book.

From the lies and secrets Sayer held to the real threats against Caro and her family that left my heart in my throat and tears in my eyes, there were many ups and downs in this story. And I loved them, well, most of them.

*Don't read the rest of this review if you've not read book one. There are spoilers for book one.*

Sayer is released from prison and has come looking for Caro. He finds her in Colorado along with the daughter he's never met. He planned to resume his life with Caro. What he hadn't planned on was bringing the Bratva to her doorstep. When their daughter is kidnapped, Caro and Sayer leave for DC to get her back. Along their journey, they run into trouble and have to resort to what's familiar. They easily slip into their old roles and this is helpful in bringing down the Bratva.

Sayer's character remained the same through to the second book. He was charming, loving, compassionate, respectful and protective. He loved Caro with his entire being and would do and did do everything for her!

Sadly, this is where this book did not fair so well for me...Caro, well, she drove me crazy. In this book, she seemed to be a completely different character than in the first. She was whiny and constantly second-guessed Sayer's actions and loyalty. She was wishy-washy and insecure. Whereas in the first book, she was strong, stubborn and kick ass! I loved her. I would have liked her to have been included in Sayer's plan rather than discovering his "lies" and taking offense. The two of them conquering the world, coming together as one would have added more to the story for me. As well, it would have helped the characters stay true to who they were.

I absolutely loved the first book. However, this one I wasn’t so keen on. That’s my opinion, I’m sure others will think it’s awesome, so don’t let it put you off.

Sayer and Caro are a steaming hot couple. They have some amazing scenes together. But I found myself questioning two things;

A) my four year old daughter had been kidnapped, would I be getting all passionate with my ex in his vehicle?

B) If my four year old daughter had just been returned to me, she’s asleep in the bedroom. My friends are asleep in other rooms. Would I be having sex on the living room sofa?

I understand that Sayer is pure hotness, hell if I met him I might be tempted to jump his leg like a horny dog.... but would I?

I adore Frankie, shes the kind of friend we all hope for. Supports you no matter what.
Juliet is the sweetest little girl. I think Gus might secretly be a big teddy bear.

I enjoyed the start and the end of this book, but I found the middle to drag on quite a bit. I’m glad I kept reading though, fantastic ending.

Consequence has been a highly anticipated read for me ever since I read the final words in “ Constant. Sayer and Caro’s story was a mix of complexities, pain, drama, and most importantly, love. How far would you go to protect the one you love?

If you’ve read the previous book, then you know that it ended on a serious cliffhanger. Sayer and Caro’s relationship took a turn and now they have to come together to save a loved one. But with their past and the enemies they’ve made over the years, nothing is that simple. Can Sayer and Caro have it all? Or will the ghosts of their past damage everything they’ve worked so hard for?

I have to say that I really liked Sayer in book one but I fell in love with this man so hard in this book. He was so loyal and more loving than he ever was and I loved seeing him in a new role. He was born to be that person and his protectiveness showed it in everything he did. Caro was more different in this one and I will admit, she craved on my nerves but I admired her determination and fierceness when it came to getting back what was stolen from her.

I’ve always loved suspense and mystery in my stories and I think this author did a really good job with making everything dramatic and having us at the edge of our seats a few times . But.. there was too much going on with more than one “Family" and I just wanted that to be over with. Despite that, I think that this series is a beautiful, heart stopping duet that will make you think about what’s important and the true meaning of family.

Consequences. The word in itself has a very negative connotation to it. Facing the consequences sounds quite forbearing and that something unpleasant or unwelcome is coming. I've been carrying this feeling around with me since the end of Constant when Rachel left me sitting out on the edge of that very high cliff.

Sayer and Caro have just been blindsided in the worst possible way. Five years ago Caro left a life with the Bratva to begin a new life for herself in Colorado, she never dreamed she would ever have to come face to face with her past again. She was always been careful with her safety, living a life flying under the radar and keeping to herself.

When Sayer shows up at her door he unfortunately brings danger trailing behind him, leading it right to them all. Now they have both been forced to return to DC to face the consequences of the risks they both took five years ago. The Bratva need something from Caro, their request is completely ridiculous and Caro has no idea if she will be able to even fulfill it. She needs to out think them all if she is to have any hope of a future free from them for good.

Her and Sayer are very adept at conning people but what Caro discovers about her past makes her think that she has been the subject of the biggest con of all. Just when she thinks she can truly trust Sayer again she has niggling seeds of doubt that take root, weaving their way into her head and making her second guess every moment she shared with him.

When you take risks, there are consequences. Facing up to them will be the hardest moments of Sayer and Caro's lives but in doing so could mean reaping the greatest rewards they could ever have dreamed of.

Like this first book, this was a fast paced, exciting read. Lots of twists, double crossing and a nasty villain added to the excitement. A fantastic conclusion to this duet.

“Fear melted into heat and courage and something deep and unnameable. He was everything in my past and all of my present
He was sweet and sexy, wild and dangerous, hope and despair. He was my biggest mystery and my feeling of home. He was mine. And I knew, I would never be able to walk away from him again. “

“It was the most beautiful thing I’d ever heard. It healed the broken pieces inside me, fixed the shattered, mess of a girl I’d been for five long years. It was water and air and life all at once. “

“Love is the lie. Control is the truth.”

Consequence is the highly anticipated sequel to Constant and it picks up right where Constant left off. I was immediately pulled back into Sayer and Caroline’s story. I was desperate for answers and was on the edge of my seat in anticipation. In Consequence, we get a good look at both the past and present. Learning the truth about the past will have you second guessing everything and will have your emotions all over the place.

Consequence is the epic conclusion that readers have been waiting for. This story is thrilling, exciting and totally consuming. It will have you completely captivated and you won’t be able to put it down. From suspense and action, to sweet and steamy moments. To moments that will shock you and keep you on your toes. And moments that will leave your heart pounding and begging for more. Consequence was everything that I was looking for and I enjoyed every single second of it.

OH MY GOD! I thought Constant was amazing, I mean like 6 star worthy. Consequence just straight up blew my mind! I mean I'm talking like 7 stars. I'm so grateful Rachel Higginson wrote this duet because Sayer and Caroline wouldn't stop talking to her.

Not only is their story wrapped up, but you get dual points of view so you learn what really happened in the past from Sayer and you see what's happening in the present from Caroline. Let me tell you, this was a game changer because Sayer is nothing like I expected, but in a really good way. Trust me when I say this, you will not see the events of this book coming.

And Sayer wasn't the biggest surprise. Gus was a huge surprise, as was FBI agent Mason. I truly hope Rachel will continue to write books in this world. I would love a book or two about Gus and I don't know why I get the idea there is something between Frankie and Mason. Either way, I'd love to read about them!

But hats off to Rachel for this amazing story. It's real and raw, yet also hopeful and uplifting with a lot of intense adrenaline packed moments. It's a thriller and entertainment all at once.

Sexy, intense, great ending to a love story...

What a perfect ending to Sayer and Caroline love story. Consequence picked up where Caroline’s daughter disappeared into thin air. Sayer found out he has a daughter all along and did not even had a chance to spend time with her. With Sayer’s dangerous past, will he ever be free? It does not seem so … he will always have to look behind his shoulder because someone is always out for blood and revenge. How will Sayer and Caroline conquer the mafia and bring their daughter back to safety?

Consequence continues with twists and turns, action packed, lies, secrets and suspense plot. The bad guy, the good guy, you trust no one. Rachel definitely turned up the heat with Sayer and Caroline in this book though. Sayer is still brooding, protective, alpha. You also see the loving sweeter side of Sayer. Caroline match him toe to toe with her feisty and fierce personality. Their love is explosive, intense, passionate… SEXY as all get out!!! The ending was just perfect! A thriller, fast paced and entertaining read. I would love a story for Frankie.

Consequence picks up right where Constant leaves off, after the big cliffhanger. So, if you haven't read book 1, do not attempt to read book 2.

The positive...
I love Rachel Higginson's writing style. She writes in a way that you feel everything. She includes all the little details, that can be easily forgotten, but are so integral to the character development.

Unfortunately, Consequence fell short for me. It's a dual POV, but I found Caro's side a little lacking. I really liked her in book #1, but I feel like she wasn't consistent in book #2. For example, she's so distraught over the abduction of her daughter that she's fooling around with Sayer? There's another part on the couch in Sayer's place that just had me shaking my head 'no'.

The beginning was ok, the middle seemed to drag, but the ending was good. I almost dnf'd it because of the middle.

4.5 on the edge stars!! Wow what a terrific end to thus duet!!

This is the second and final book of “The Confidence Game” series. It can not be read as a stand alone you must read “Constant” first. I really wish this was an ongoing series because I am still so curious about Gus, Frankie and Mason. But I am also a greedy girl.

This story is a continuation of “Constant” and since you have read the first book you know that Sayer found Caro and so many secrets and truths were being revealed (maybe not as fast as we all would have liked). Then, bam, there is a kidnapping. So this book picks up from there. It was a little crazy because the first chapter didn’t pick right up where we left off but in the past.

This story is about revealing it all and finding out who the bad guys really are. Let me just say Sayer really was a smart man. I will not say anymore because these secrets need to be revealed in pieces just like they were to me.

💭My thoughts..

This book just made me reaffirm how much I freaking love Sayer Wesley!!!!! He is a damn genius and if his love for Caro isn’t all consuming, knock you off your feet then let me say you may have some issues. Sayer is my latest book crush!! Cage made me want to love him as well but I didn’t get enough of him. Fucking Atticus. That’s all I will say. Juliet is exactly how I expected. She is the perfect mix of the two. Caroline damn she can work my nerves but I give her props for being a great mama.

The ending of this book was superb. Man did I love it. Once again my one issue is I feel as though a lot of this could have been slimmed down to make it a smoother read. But I love the story line. I love the past and the present. These characters are well developed and make the reader completely invested in them. Good or bad.

I think this is a great duet. One that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I voluntarily received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.  Where I loved the flashbacks in book 1, they weren’t as seamless and didn’t flow as smoothly in book 2.  The story also bogs down and is always stuck in Caro’s head, which was frustrating.  Caro went from a character I loved to someone I was ready to be done with.  I was much like Atticus at the end of the story; I didn’t understand her appeal.  I still don’t.

I did like that we got a lot from Sayer’s perspective, and I think I would have loved this book had the entire story been done from his POV.   We finally get to see his motivations and his genuine devotion to Caro.  Although, much was left unexplained or at least not to my liking.  Had the book just been in his POV it would have given him more time?

All is not lost, and the book did progress, just not as quickly as I would have liked. I loved book one so much this one just didn’t have the same rhythm.   The ending is lovely but all and all I am glad to be done with this series.

I am rating Consequence (The confidence Game #2) 3 Boundless stars, it was good, just not nearly as good as book 1.

At the end of Constant, readers are left wondering what will happen to Juliet? Can Sayer and Caro get her back before it is too late? Thus begins a journey that will take these former childhood sweethearts into the abyss that threatens to swallow them whole.

Sayer has spent years trying to discover why Caroline left him. Without any notice or warning…she just vanished. Caroline was determined to keep anyone from finding out she had a daughter. Now the secret is out, and lives are in danger. What should be the scariest moment in Sayer and Caro’s life is riddled with unspent emotion and feelings between them. How will it affect their future? Where does this leave Juliet? Can they survive if Juliet is placed further in harms way?

After diving head first into Constant, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Consequences. Finally – I could learn just which direction Sayer and Caroline would travel. In their quest to keep Juliet safe, these former young lovers experienced a whirlwind of emotion and obstacles. Some believable….some not so much.

While the premise of this story is definitely unique, I felt the second installment of the duet did not live up to the same standard that the first book acclaimed. There were so many things going on simultaneously in this plot. A past that is dictated by the hands of the mob. Not just one branch…but four different families running a con all at the same time.

During the quest to get Juliet back in their arms, Caroline is also coming to grips with all of the ‘workings’ that Sayer had going on during the past. Some making Caro question just where Sayer’s loyalties lie. Nothing is as it seems, but yet, it is exactly as it seems. I am not sure if it was the ease to which I figured out the entire ‘layered past’ or if it was just that obvious when reading.

The believability of the quest to rid the past from Sayer and Caro’s life became more of an impact than the believability. Don’t get me wrong…the story was good. It just didn’t hold the impact I felt that a reader should experience when reading a story in which a child is kidnapped by the underbelly of the crime world. The story just lacked the luster that one would expect…the good and the bad. It was a plot that seemed more of ‘tying the bow’ than a believability factor.

Now …the secondary characters played a big part in this book. So intertwined in this tale it makes you wonder more about Frankie and Gus than the story at hand. Hopefully - they will get their own stories one day. Something that I look forward to with great interest.

Consequence picks up right where Constant left off – thankfully. If you’ve read Constant, then you already know that it leaves you wanting, no, scratch that, needing more. I was more than a little eager to get back into Caro and Sayer’s story.

There was never a dull moment in this book. I felt every ounce of the fear and desperation that Caro was experiencing. All she wanted was to provide a normal and safe environment for her young daughter, but her past always seemed to be lurking around every corner, taunting her, and making her realize that a normal life may never be in the cards. Her daughter was her number one priority, and she would stop at nothing to ensure that she would have a good life.

Consequence was told from the present day, but also provided the reader with glimpses into the past. These flashbacks gave me a better understanding of the characters’ lives and their motivations.

My suspicions were on high alert throughout the whole book. I never really knew who could be trusted. With all of the deception and manipulation, I was constantly doubting the integrity of the characters. But then again, they did live a life of crime, so was there really any integrity? The only thing that I was one hundred percent certain of was that Caro was a good mother. That could never be disputed. Everything that she did, she did with her daughter’s well-being in mind.

Consequence is a well-written, action-packed book that pulled me right into the heart of Caro and Sayer’s story. Despite having grown up in a criminal world, their love for each other seemed to be the one shining light to come out of their dark upbringing. There were so many sweet, romantic moments between them that counterbalanced the bleak, danger-filled times. But could you ever really let your guard down in that life? Could you allow yourself to completely trust the one person who promised to love you forever? And the bigger question was, could you ever truly escape that life?

Consequence was a great ending to this duet. It was fast-paced, intriguing, and kept my heart rate high.

Consequence is book two and the conclusion to The Confidence Game duet. We pick up right where book one ended. Sayer and Caroline are on the hunt to retrieve their daughter. The mob bosses want Caro back in the game by using her to get them out of prison. Sayer has put a lot of work into putting these guys away. How do they get their daughter back but not go back to the mob? Sayer and Caro come up with a plan to keep the bosses put away and try to live a normal life. The problem is Caro still has too many issues and doesn’t trust Sayer.

I found Caro to be too difficult at times. I understand she was raised in an untrustworthy world but Sayer thought she hung the moon. Lack of communication made it hard to trust. She should have put more faith in him. I felt the flashbacks were too much. I also wanted more time between Sayer and Juliet. The story felt rushed in the conclusion. I think the heavy mafia stuff took away from the character development.

All in all this was an ok conclusion but I think I enjoyed book one more.

This book was amazing. I devoured every word of it. This had just the right amount of love, drama and action. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole way through it.

In book 2 in continues as Caro and Sayer try their best to escape the Russian mob and the mess they have somehow managed to get into while trying to keep their daughter Juliet safe. During all of the scheming secrets from their past surface and they are faced to the truth and the consequences. With the weight of the secrets weighing on their newly rekindled romance will the relationship survive? More importantly will they make it out of their longest running con yet, alive?

I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I've been anticipating this release and conclusion of the Confidence Game after the bit of a cliffhanger we were left with in the previous book.  CONSEQUENCE picks up where CONSTANT left off and gives us a different kind of book than the first.  Where there were some cuter and simpler moments in the first one, this one dives a bit more into the Russian mob and the life Caroline thought she had left behind.

First of all, I think the author has done a great job at letting us into this world without making this a dark romance.  There's an ease and flow to this storyline that just makes it a breeze to read.  That's one of my favorite things about it, actually.  This book had a lot more danger, secrets and lies than the first but it still didn't feel like it every crossed that line.  While our main characters are complex and have done some bad things in their lives, you also get a very good sense for who they are on the inside and where their loyalties lie.  I loved that circumstances didn't change them.

CONSEQUENCE read a lot like a great action/romance movie.  With a great set of characters, solid writing and an interesting and fast moving plot, it delivered everything I could've hoped for in this conclusion.  And even managed to surprise me with the turn of some events.  Sayer was just as adorable in this one and yes, maybe my heart melted a bit when he actually got to have some moments with his daughter.  The love between Sayer and Caroline was the force that drove both of them and couldn't be denied and that message came through in their actions.

While this book cannot be read as a standalone, it's only a duet so you can easily pick up the first and then dive right into this one.

This was a great ending to their love story and also a great teaser for side characters that I would love to read more about.  Like Frankie, Gus and Cage.  If that ever happens, I'll be sure to jump right back into this world for sure.

3.5/5 stars

Consequence is the conclusion the The Confidence Game Duet. I would categorize this series as romantic suspense. It is necessary to read book 1, Constant first as it is a continuing story.

Caroline was the only narrator for book one. However, in Consequence we also get some of Sayer's POV.

Constant ended with an amazing cliffhanger pertaining to Caroline's daughter Juliet. I am a huge fan of well done cliffhangers. So I was very anxious to read Consequence.

Consequence is actually quite different from the first book. One big difference is the setting. This book takes place in DC, whereas the first book took place in an amazing town in Colorado. I really missed the Colorado setting as it was one of my favorite things about the first book. And because of the loss of the Colorado setting the second book also loses all of the great secondary characters from Constant (especially Maggie, Jesse and Cass).

Another big difference is that the mafia plays a much bigger role in Consequence. Yes, we did see a lot of the mafia in the flashbacks in book one. But I really do not enjoy mafia stories. So having it at the forefront of book two was a big miss for me.

Consequence follows a similar format to Constant. We get glimpses of the past (15 years ago, 10 years ago and 5 years ago -although I think most of the flashbacks this time were from Sayer's POV).

I like that we get some insight into Sayer in this book. However, I thought that having his POV would make me like him more. But in a way it has actually made me like him less. This is supposed to be an epic love story. But it just wasn't to me. Caroline spent much of the time not trusting Sayer at all. I felt like I was supposed to like him. But I just never really did.

The suspense was definitely the best part of this duet to me. Plus I really loved Caroline and Juliet. There was a lot of action towards the end of the book. And I liked the twists and turns. I just really missed the characters and setting from book one.

DO NOT READ my review if you have yet to read book 1, CONSTANT, it will have spoilers!

“I’m going to kiss you now. You might be afraid of me Caroline, but you’re also still very much in love with me. You need to be reminded of that.”
***

From the moment I finished book one I was craving more of Sayer and Caro. I was in dire need of having to know what would happen next. We were left with a pretty huge cliffhanger with Juliet being taken and Sayer finding out he has a daughter. Where the next book would go was up in the air. Everyone, even the readers, were left on a ledge of unknown.

Even though Sayer and Caro got “together” at the end of book one, the kidnapping of their daughter put a lot of things on hold. Their feelings, where they stand with each other, even the status of their relationship...all on hold until they can get her back safely. From there they would have to wade through a whole lot of secrets, a mountain of lies, and a deep and buried hurt they both have been carrying the last 5 years. Can they even trust one another? Will they be able to work through their past to make a future even possible? So many questions and not enough answers.

I, for one, am actually sad this series is done. Like super sad. I love mafia type movies, so having a book with a mafia storyline was icing on the cake. And I know we have heard Sayer & Caro’s story, but I would happily read more from the secondary characters: Frankie, Gus...heck, I even want a story on Cage. They all have stories to tell. Gimme, gimme.

A captivating storyline that had me on the edge of my seat, an alluring romance that pulled at each and every one of my heartstrings, and amazing characters I never want to give up (ever)...CONSEQUENCE was that one story of 2018 I couldn't wait to get my hands on. And I wasn't disappointed. Higginson nailed this story with incredible writing and romance centered around a love that never gave up. A forever kind of love. It was absolutely marvelous. 5 Brilliant Stars!
