About the author

Henry James was an American-British author. He is regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James.
He is best known for his novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between émigré Americans, the English, and continental Europeans, such as The Portrait of a Lady. His later works, such as The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl were increasingly experimental. In describing the internal states of mind and social dynamics of his characters, James often wrote in a style in which ambiguous or contradictory motives and impressions were overlaid or juxtaposed in the discussion of a character's psyche. For their unique ambiguity, as well as for other aspects of their composition, his late works have been compared to Impressionist painting.
His novella The Turn of the Screw has garnered a reputation as the most analysed and ambiguous ghost story in the English language and remains his most widely adapted work in other media. He wrote other highly regarded ghost stories, such as "The Jolly Corner".
James published articles and books of criticism, travel, biography, autobiography, and plays. Born in the United States, James largely relocated to Europe as a young man, and eventually settled in England, becoming a British citizen in 1915, a year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916. Jorge Luis Borges said "I have visited some literatures of East and West; I have compiled an encyclopedic compendium of fantastic literature; I have translated Kafka, Melville, and Bloy; I know of no stranger work than that of Henry James."

Une agréable nouvelle de 80 pages qui nous plonge dans la maison d’une famille de la bonne société. Mrs De Grey decide recueillir une pauvre fille qui, par la suite va tomber amoureuse de Paul, son fils. Le sentiment étant partagé par les deux, on apprends qu’une malédictions frappe cette famille depuis des générations. Fatalement, une personne meurt.


Je trouve que l’écriture de l’auteur a enrichi ce récit, qui se présente bien simplet. Le style percutant et les ambiances crée attisent notre attention

L'écriture était sympa... maintenant, j'avoue que je n'ai pas compris quand chose à l'histoire. ☹️
Je m'attendais à une romance mignonne et tout, mais je crois que je n'avais pas bien lu le résumé...

"Αλλά εκείνη τυφλωμένη, ανόητη, δίχως τύψεις στράγγισε τη ζωή από την ύπαρξή του. Την ώρα που εκείνη άνθιζε και ευημερούσε, αυτός μαραινόταν και έφθινε. Ενόσω εκείνη ζούσε γι' αυτόν, εκείνος πέθαινε για εκείνη."
Σ'αυτή τη σύντομη νουβέλα γραμμένη λίγο πριν την αναχώρησή του για την Αγγλία, τη χώρα που έμελλε να γίνει η πατρίδα του, στολισμένη ελαφρώς με γοτθικά στοιχεία, γίνονται ευδιάκριτα όσα θα διαμορφώσουν τη μετέπειτα γραφή του• το τόσο χαρακτηριστικό ιδιότυπο μπλέξιμο της βρετανικής και αμερικανικής σχολής.
Με έναν υπερβολικά φροντισμένο λόγο που αγγίζει την επιτήδευση, θρέφει τον ρομαντισμό και υποθάλπει το μελλοντικό συγγραφικό του ύφος, εκείνο που στα μεγαλύτερα σε έκταση βιβλία του θα εκφραστεί τόσο υπέροχα, κομψά και αβίαστα.
Για να μην παρεξηγηθώ και στον Ντε Γκρέυ η κομψότητα του λόγου είναι απαράμιλλη όμως δουλεμένη με σκοπό, όπου διαφαίνεται μια υποβόσκουσα τάση εντυπωσιασμού και το άγχος της πρώιμης δημιουργίας ενός συγγραφέα που πασχίζει για καθιέρωση χωρίς όμως την ωριμότητα του έμπειρου λογοτέχνη. Η αβεβαιότητα του νεαρού τότε Χένρυ πριν γίνει Τζέιμς γίνεται ξεκάθαρα αντιληπτή από την πρώτη σελίδα, όπως άλλωστε και το ταλέντο του.

So this story again lacks much depth but at least it has a sense of irony and foreshadowing that one my expect in a better horror story. I recall reading Poe, that his stories all had the focus of the horror be the motivation of the characters involved. And this story has a sense of that motivation; it tells of the curse long ago and how the counter curse also both ends that tragedy but cause another finally.
