Rate this book

“Save him, please, he is all that is left of me,” are the words that drives William MacLeod across a parched desert in hopes of survival.

A fanatical priest sent to convert and guide Indians in Mexico’s most outlying province believes he must abduct a child in order to save its soul.

A woman is cast out of her home, and the mission where she sought refuge, for allowing herself to be violated by her father’s chosen suitor.

William MacLeod must combat the shifting powers of government, and a Frenchman known for his killing skills, to search for his son in this vast land that is Alta California under newly independent Mexico.

And a beautiful young woman, taken from the streets of Vera Cruz, holds the answers, but must chose to sacrifice her own desires and cast aside the possibilities of a forbidden love, to bring happiness to others.

When dealing with a novel like this, you can have ups and downs and I liked that the author was able to keep the pacing throughout. Wonderful writing style and even more wonderful storyline. The writing style was easy to follow and really seemed to flow naturally.

I loved the backstory and the things that the main character had to overcome. He really showed growth throughout the course of the novel.

Definitely a great read.

In my mind, I see a young Clint Eastwood playing the role of William MacLeod, a member of an American fur trapping party who falls for beautiful young women in need of recusing very nicely in this wholly adventurous packed historical fiction in the newly formed Alta Califonia under the control of the Republic of Mexico. With the loss of Maria, the mother of his young son Diego whom he has been torn away from. MacLeod must traverse his way back and forth across these desolate lands in search of his son, only to find himself blocked by bureaucratic paperwork, murders, lecherous soldiers, poor Indians indentured to the Missionary priests and evil money hungry foreigners bent on exploiting anyone they come in contact with. This book was won through the Goodreads giveaway and sent to me for an honest opinion. Thank you, both, and I look forward to reading more of authors E. Paul Bergeron's stories about the birth of California in his "A Land of Turmoil" series. I have already downloaded and added to my "to read" list the first in this series "In the Shadow of Vargas" which I have access to through my Amazon Unlimited Kindle account.

There are a lot of moving parts to this novel and a good amount of drama and action without being action packed. I liked the way the characters were relatable even though it was set in a different time period.
The Historical aspect is very well done and the imagery and setting is amazing. The Author really brings the world to life through words.
Get ready to be immersed in the world and captivated by the characters he has created.

E. Paul Bergeron has a way of writing a plot that unfolds so seamlessly. Everything including the pacing was well executed.

There is a variety of characters and all of them will intrigue the reader from the very beginning making flipping pages that much easier. I love it when I'm invested in a story like I was with this one.

There is so much history and truth to this novel.
